A mirage is an illusion, something without substance that does not really exist. Although not real, its unattainable nature is perfect for musical inspiration. Composer Jacob de Haan was strolling through a picturesque forest of the Dutch Gelderland when he thought he saw a body of water. While there was no water, its mere image created waves that can be relived in De Haan’s original composition, Mirage. Mirage is het Engelse synoniem voor ‘Fata Morgana‘. De creatieve aanleiding voor deze compositie was dan ook het verhaal van een wandelaar die in een boslandschap in Gelderland water denkt te zien. Het in het triodeel deelsgezongen ‘wandelthema’ brengt de vreugde die de toeschouwer aan dit natuurverschijnsel beleeft bijzonder goed tot uitdrukking.Mirage“ ist ein englisches Synonym für Fata Morgana“. Als kreativer Anstoß für diese Komposition diente Jacob de Haan ein Spaziergänger, der durch eine Waldlandschaft im holländischen Gelderland geht und dabei glaubt, ein Gewässer zu sehen. Das im Trio teilweise gesungene Spaziergangs“-Thema bringt die Freude an diesem Naturerlebnis besonders gut zum Ausdruck. « Fata Morgana » est le nom donné un phénomène de mirage, et que l'on attribuait la fée Morgane. Du mirage, nous passons aux notes joyeuses d’une étrange promenade en forêt où la lumière donne la sensation de l’existence d’une nappe d’eau au pied d’un arbre. Mirage ou réalité ? vous de le découvrir. Ce qui est s r, c’est que le Thème de la promenade (Trio) est partiellement chanté. Una sorta di miraggio ha ispirato Jacob de Haan a comporre questo brano, prendendo spunto appunto da un “miraggio†di uno specchio d’acqua che gli si è presentato durante una passeggiata in una foresta in Olanda. Il tema della “passeggiata†parzialmente cantato nel trio, enfatizza gli spettacoli che la natura ci offre.

De melodie van het Schifferlied (schipperslied) van Friedrich Silcher (1789-1860) is oorspronkelijk een barcarolle uit de Provence. Silcher arrangeerde het en nam het met een eigen tekst op in een van zijn bundels met volksliederen.Het is daarom ook bekend onder de titel Es löscht das Meer die Sonne aus - de eerste regel van de tekst. Silchers versie van het Schifferlied kenmerkt zich door helderheid en eenvoud, in navolging van de Weense klassieken.In dit arrangement voor blaasorkest werd deze benadering gerespecteerd en is dezelfde stijl gehandhaafd. Het werk kan ook met mannenkoor (TB) uitgevoerd worden.Die Melodie des Schifferliedes von Friedrich Silcher ist ursprünglich eine Barcarolle aus der französischen Provence, auch bekannt als Es löscht das Meer die Sonne aus, nach der ersten Textzeile des Liedes von Silcher. Silchers Version ist gekennzeichnet von Klarheit und Einfachheit, im Stile der Wiener Klassiker. In dieser Bearbeitung für Blasorchester wurde dieser Stil beibehalten. Charles Dickens certainly would have known the three carols in A CHARLES DICKENS CHRISTMAS. They were among the best-known and best-loved carols of the Victorian Era, and were a staple of the repertoire of roving waits, or carollers, that appear in his novels. Today this music is as familiar as Santa Claus and Tiny Tim. THE FIRST NOWELL was first collected in Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern by William Sandys in 1833. It is most probably 200 years older than that. The Oxford Book of Carols contains nine verses, which makes it an ideal processional for Christmas or Epiphany (the feast commemorating the coming of the Magi). COVENTRY CAROL, or Lully, Lullay, comes from the medieval tradition of mystery and miracle plays. In 1534 the Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors Guild included a scene in which the mothers of Jewish children sang this haunting lullaby after hearing the horrifying order: Herod the king, In his raging, All young children to slay. The music is anonymous; the text believed to be by Robert Croo. ANGELS WE HAVE HEARD ON HIGH is probably of French origin, but the English long ago adopted it as their own. Besides the French text, Les Anges dans nos compagnes, it is known in several versions and by several titles, including Angels from the Realms of Glory, When the Crimson Sun Had Set, and Westminster Carol. It belongs to a category known as macaronic carols, which mix vernacular verses with Latin refrains - in this instance, Gloria in Excelsis Deo (Glory be to God on High). The famous Barcarolle from Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann opens the fourth act of the opera, which takes place in Venice. For this reason Offenbach chose a barcarolle - a Venetian gondolier song with its characteristic swaying rhythm. Wil van der Beek’s arrangement gives this romantic song an alternative, lighter beginning, making it suitable for almost any wind orchestra. Jacques Offenbach (1819 - 1880) was een Franse componist van Duitse afkomst. Hij geldt in het algemeen als een van de belangrijkste scheppers van de operette, een term, die hijzelf nooit gebruikte, hij sprak liever van opéra bouffeof opéra comique. Hier mogen zijn alom bekende werken genoemd worden zoals “Orphée aux enfersâ€, “La belle Hélèneâ€, “Barbe-bleue†en “La vie Parisienneâ€.Offenbach schreef slechts één opera, die nu nog steeds repertoire houdt: “LesContes d’Hoffmannâ€, zijn zwanenzang, die bij zijn overlijden nog niet geheel af was. Ernest Guiraud voltooide dit werk en was zo handig om uit een eerdere compositie van Offenbach (“Les fées du Rhin†uit 1863) een lied te nemenen dit als barcarolle toe te voegen. Dit bleek een gouden greep te zijn! Deze barcarolle is immers wereldberoemd geworden.Een barcarolle (ook wel gondellied genoemd, het Italiaanse “barca†betekent boot) is een volksliedje, dat gezongenwordt door Venetiaanse gondeliers, of het is een muziekstuk, dat in die stijl gecomponeerd is, doorgaans in een wiegende 6/8 maat. Grote klassieke meesters namen graag barcarolles op in hun opera’s (Weber, Rossini, Donizetti,Verdi), maar als zelfstandige compositie is de barcarolle ook erg geliefd (Mendelssohn, Tschaikowsky, Bartok, Fauré, Glazoenov, Villa-Lobos, Gershwin, Bernstein bijv.).Die berühmte Barcarolle aus der Oper Hoffmanns Erzählungen von Jacques Offenbach eröffnet den vierten Akt der Oper, der in Venedig spielt. Daher wählte Offenbach eine Barcarole - ein venezianisches Gondellied mit seinem charakteristischen wiegenden Rhythmus. Mit einem alternativen, leichteren Beginn macht Wil van der Beeks Bearbeitung das romantische Lied fast jedem Blasorchester zugänglich. Optando per un inizio più accessibile, l’arrangiamento di Wil van der Beek di questa romantica canzone è adatto alla grande maggioranza delle bande.
