Originally composed in 1909 to be included in one of the ceremonies of the Knights of St. John with a bold outside instrumentation, Strauss later scored the work for full orchestra. As the title implies, Douglas Wagner's condensed arrangement presents major themes in a concert setting for the first time for concert band that may also appropriately be used during a commencement ceremony or any occasion that involves a procession. The Gymnopédies, published in Paris starting in 1888, are three piano compositions written by French composer and pianist Erik Satie. The name referrers to an ancient Greek festival and dance. This piece has a haunting quality to its very familiar melody while its harmonies are atmospheric and ethereal. The setting would easily stand on its own but would also lend itself well to choreography for modern dance or ballet to enhance the performance and involve additional performers on stage at your concert. The flowing lines and beautiful textures make Festival Dance a must for your concert band repertoire. (3:00).

Sarabande and Gavotte are the second and third movements of the Holberg Suite, Op. 40, a standard movement of the Baroque suite. Both movements may be performed as part of the entire suite or as a stand-alone selection. This arrangement is true to the original work---as feasible and offers the sonorities of the concert band ensemble in a very playable version. The first movement, Praeludium, (00-38363) released last season, has recently been selected as Reviewer's Choice in the October 2012 issue of The Instrumentalist magazine.
