Located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Fairfax County has quite an interesting story to tell, from the times of the Revolutionary War to the Civil War, to its prominent position as one of the premiere suburbs of our nation’s capital, and most populous jurisdiction in Virginia. This piece serves to acknowledge the history of this region while representing its vibrancy and character. The opening patriotic soundscape offers a backdrop to the energetic piece that follows. A juxtaposition of those themes brings the piece to a close.

This work was originally written for brass band (see there). At the composer's request, his former pupil Marcel Wengler wrote an arrangement for Symphonie wind band, which is equal to the original in ever-yway. Here Henze and Wengler have given wind players a work which successfully combines a popular style and to some extent extremely witty elements with the resources of new music. It is excellent concert music for advanced and Professional orchestras.Hans Werner Henze belongs to a small circle of internationally known cornposers of serious contemporary music. In his operas, symphonies, and music for ensembles and chamber music groups, as well as in his contributions to music for amateurs, there are works with a distinctive sense of form, delicate tonality and rhythmic variety which nonetheless never lose sight of that dimension of humanity.Marcel Wengler (born 1946) is now a freelance composer. A city is founded—– it has a heart that beats. But visible achievements such as buildings and infrastructure merely bear witness to what its true heart is made of—the people who have lived, and still live, in the city. The pulse of the city, brought to life by itsheartbeat, changes over time. Who hasn't seen those time-lapse images showing twinkling lines of car lights as people make their wayto work, while others stand at traffic lights, only moving as if at the push of a button? These are like life flowing in the veins, driven by a strong heart. Leonardo da Vinci had already imagined the rivers as the blood vessels of the Earth. In any city, though, it's not the rivers but the movement and activities of the people who live there. The heart doesn't always beat steadily, however, but its rhythm can be influenced by joy, fear, and many other things. Every city has its own pulse. This is also true of the university city of Marburg, where people from over 100 nations now live together in a cosmopolitan and tolerant community. This work describes the city from its founding in 1222, and the charity of Saint Elizabeth, all the way to the present day.

Solo claves usher in the authentic Latin percussion section that sets the style for Pico Rivera. A simple but effective bass line joins the percussion section in establishing an interesting accompaniment for the syncopated melody that follows. Rich harmonies that utilize a variety of seventh chords dominate the second theme and the stop time percussion fills that open the coda. A brief modulation brings us to a restatement of the opening melody with a new countermelody in the trumpets and horns. Pico Rivera is a city in Southern California that has a long tradition of producing excellent bands.

The commissioner of this work requested a piece that characterized humankind's ability to overcome personal tragedy, a scenario which often leaves one with a philosophy of serenity. The composer decided to use the analogy of the sequoia, a generic name for the huge redwood trees, particularly the Californian redwood. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground which require heat to open their shells and germinate. The redwood forests are frequently subject to fires which can destroy the mother tree but ironically also provide the impetus for their seeds to spring into life; the trees actually need a disaster to procreate. In a similar way, the human spirit can actually gain from setbacks - we become stronger after adversity. The music falls into sections which can broadly be characterised as doubt, conflict, catharsis, inner calm and, finally, triumph.

Maurice Ravel's 'Piano Concerto in G major' was composed between 1929 and 1931. The concerto was deeply infused with jazz idioms and harmonies, which, at the time, were highly popular in Paris as well as the United States, where Ravel was traveling on a piano tour. Ravel remarked that The most captivating part of jazz is its rich and diverting rhythm. ... Jazz is a very rich and vital source of inspiration for modern composers and I am astonished that so few Americans are influenced by it. Swiss arranger Simon Scheiwiller transcribed the concerto for piano with accompaniment of a Symphonic Band with great respect to the original instrumentation.

Handel's Oralorio Saul, composed in 1739, contains a series of instrumental movements which provide commentary on the action. Composers have often written works in the form of suites from these movements. Handel's blocks of polyphonic music are also particularly suitable for wind band. His orchestral suites were usually performed in Ihe open air. Many of his themes rank among the great inventions of musical history. They give his music dignity and greatness and at the same time they remain popular in character. The instrumental movements from 'Saul' are suitable for concerts, including those in churches, for serenades and for contests from intermediate to advanced level.(2 Floten, 1 Oboe ad lib., 1 Fagott ad lib., 1 Klarinette in Es ad lib., 3 Klarinetten in B, 2 Alt-Saxophone in Es, 1 Tenor-Saxophon in B, 3 Horner in F, 3 Trompeten in B, 3 Posaunen, 2 Flugelhorner (Kornette) in B, 1 Tenorhorn in B, 1 Bariton, 2 Tuben, Pauken, Schlagzeug: Glockenspiel, kleine Trommel, grosse Trommel, Becken).

When Hearts Tremble is an emotion packed piece dedicated to musician friends lost all to soon. This beautiful composition by Brant Karrick reflects on the fragility of human existence, joyous memories of loved ones and their effect on everyone around them, and maintaining hope for what the future will hold when all feels lost. This tour de force piece perfectly displays Karrick's polished compositional craft with impeccable scoring, beautiful melodic writing, and exceptional orchestrational color. While the day-to-day grind of our lives can be filled with overwhelming obligations, goals and commitments, it is sometimes very easy to forget just how precious and fragile life is . It is so easy to get caught up in our own personal feelings and worries that we sometimes don’t realize and appreciate the many blessings we have, especially friendships . On Wednesday, November 18, 2015 the Jefferson High School Band in Jefferson, Georgia lost two of its members to a fatal car accident . The victims were brothers . Music was a constant part of their lives, and the boys were talented percussionists in the marching band . To help with the grieving process the school and community commissioned this piece to celebrate the lives of William and Alex Trimble .As a father, I cannot imagine losing a child, let alone two, and beginning this piece was very difficult as I felt extreme anguish, especially for the parents . But it was decided the piece should primarily reflect the enthusiasm, youthful spirits and positive influence these two young men demonstrated as they were deeply loved by their band mates, community and family . There are four main themes, each representing the feelings and emotions that are certain to occur after a loss of loved ones . The first theme is a short, introductory fanfare, strong and bold, to stand for courage . A second dance-like melody features a liltingly mixed meter to portray a youthful and carefree innocence . This soon changes into a third more song-like, and stately theme intended to provide encouragement as we move forward through life .The middle of the piece includes a soft transition as two snare drummers give voice to the boys, allowing them to thank their friends and assuring them that it will be okay . This moves directly into a slow melody introduced by the saxophones (Alex, the younger brother was also a saxophonist) and is a time for reflection and allows for feelings of sadness at losing beloved friends . However, a second statement of the same theme, now at full volume with a strong percussion cadence, intends to lift the spirits and allows all friends to unite in joyous celebration of life . Both the enthusiastic dance theme and stately lyrical theme return, now in different keys, and work their way toward the highly energetic burst of glorious sound in the short and wild coda . When Hearts Tremble was written to celebrate the joys of youth and life, and should remind us that our friends and loved ones are precious, and we should live each day to bring more joy into the world and into the lives of others .

Imstrumentation: Solo Horn & Wind Ensemble Duration: Composed: 2004 Published by: Dunsinane Music Composer's Note: Great Scott! was commissioned by Mary Ann Craig, Director of Bands at Montclair State University for the MSU Wind Ensemble, and is dedicated to Mr. Jeffrey Scott. A work in one movement, Great Scott! may be heard as a stream of consciousness in the mind of the soloist. The work opens with the soloist quietly reflecting. The remnants of a dance tune are heard in the lower brass, as if from a radio, and the soloist unselfconsciously incorporates this material into his musings. He is joined by the ensemble, which reiterates and makes emphatic the soloist’s reflections. A variation of the dance tune, now integrated with the soloist’s ideas, is heard in the saxophones, soon joined by the French horn, gradually leading to a quieter section that again incorporates and expands the gathering musical materials. This leads to the central, lyric section of the piece—where the soloist returns to his initial musings, now amplified by the ensemble. This time, the dance music is not heard separately—in essence, it has been re-constructed by the soloist with contributions from the ensemble. A fanfare-like section follows, featuring brass and timpani. After a brief pause, the opening material is heard a final time, now with an active, rapid surface, as the piece rushes to a close.

This powerful work depicts the frantic voyage of the RMS Carpathia, the first ship to arrive on the scene after receiving a distress call from the Titanic. Determined to save as many lives as possible, the captain managed to squeeze 17 knots out of a supposed 14-knot vessel. The music depicts the vibrations of the ship's hull along with the hissing of the boiler. As Carpathia arrives on the terrible scene, the music relinquishes its fast pace to a slow, mournful hymn. After a brief moment of tranquility, the music intensifies as the rescue ship embarks on her triumphant yet tragic return voyage to safety. Absolutely stunning! (2:10).

Satoshi Yagisawa is well known for his dramatic symphonic band compositions. Even though he has written relatively few marches, they are also very popular: March Willing and Able is based on a chorale while March Bou Shu is based on a Japanese folk song. The Memory of Our Native Place is a rather unusual piece for Yagisawa, as it actually closely resembles a traditional march. The piece opens with a lively fanfare and is contrasted by the following theme. The trio features a chorale-like melody. The Memory of Our Native Place beginnt mit einer strahlenden Fanfare, bevor ein inniges Thema erklingt.
