This serious programmatic work depicts a day in the life of a honeybee hive by drawing on various musical effects throughout. The opening section, Daybreak, is tranquil and serene, yet intensifies as the hive becomes active. A flurry of musical activity accompanies the next section, Scouting for Pollen, as forager bees disperse. Other interesting sections include Directional Tango, Her Majesty, the Queen, Hungry Bear (depicting the ransacking of the hive), and New Cycle Begins, during which several of the previous themes come back in a brilliant collage of musical sounds and textures. Experience the full gamut of styles in this brilliant and highly entertaining work!

Grieg’s suite from ‘Sigurd Jorsalfar’ remains one of his most popular works and here, arranged by Wil van der Beek, we are pleased to be able to offer a version for Concert Band. This one will be a sure-fire hit with any fans of classical music.

Looking Up, Moving On was commissioned by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra and was part of a tour programme they gave in May 2012, a tour which included many areas that had been devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The theme of the piece is the powerful ability of mankind to overcome such disasters and look forward to a positive future; it opens in an appropriately optimistic mood, featuring bright orchestral colours and extensive syncopation. A chorale-like fanfare is soon introduced on horns and euphonium, answered by chirpy woodwinds. The mood subsides until an alto saxophone introduces a brief quotation from the composer's The Sun Will RiseAgain, which was written to raise funds for victims of the 2011 disaster. The mood soon changes and the horns introduce a noble theme under woodwind flourishes. This leads to the main Vivo section of the piece which is characterised again by strong syncopations as part of a florid theme in the low woodwinds. This melody undergoes varied development by all sections of the band until the horn fanfare returns triumphally on the brass. This is extended and leads to a faster coda which brings together previous material in counterpoint to close the work in optimistic mood. Looking Up, Moving On is gecomponeerd in opdracht van het Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra.

The piece traces key events in the life of Haakon the Good, later to become King Haakon I (ca. 921-960), who had been fostered by King Athelstan of England as part of a peace agreement made by his father (The Future King). The English king brought him up in the Christian religion and, on the news of his father's death, provided him with ships and men for an expedition against his half-brother Eirik Bloodaxe, who had been proclaimed king of Norway. On his arrival he travelled north (The Journey to Trondheim), where he began to gain the support of the landowners by promising to give up the rights of taxation his father had previously claimed. Elrik's sons allied themselves with the Danes, but were invariably defeated by Haakon, who was successful in everything he undertook except in his attempt to introduce Christianity to the country (The Missionary King), which aroused an opposition he did not feel strong enough to face. One of his most famous victories was The Battle of Rastarkalv (near Frei) in 955. By placing ten standards far apart along a low ridge (to give the impression his army was bigger than it actually was), he managed to fool Eirik's sons that they were outnumbered (the ten standards are represented by ten loud chords that begin in m. 420). The Danes fled and were slaughtered by Haakon's army.

The Wooden Clock was composed for students in the early stages of musical development and employs basic rhythms and techniques in a creative and fun manner. Keeping time as a musician is essential, and this clever work reminds young musicians of that important responsibility in music making. Wood blocks are also used to mimic the ticking of a clock, and the entire band gets involved as they whisper tick, tock, tick, tock in several places.

János Galli (1921-2006) was a conductor, composer, music teacher, a well-known and highly respected personality in Hungarian wind music life. As a music teacher he directed numerous string and wind ensembles and choirs, made hundreds of transcriptions for wind orchestras, and instrumented works for ensembles of all sizes and formations. The most important of his works are his series of volumes of marches, folksong arrangements and church music. He was excellent at instrumentation. For its fine sound and easy playability we recommend to youth wind bands and their conductors this work of his composed in memory of the king who founded the Hungarian state.János Galli (1921-2006) Chorleiter, Komponist und Musiklehrer, war in den ungarischen Bläserkreisen eine bekannte und anerkannte Persönlichkeit.
