Sinfonia Hungarica is a three-movement symphony that depicts the history of Hungary. All three movements were inspired by historical key figures, wars, and other important events from this country. This symphony is a celebration of Hungary’s millennium in 2001.The final movement is named after ISTVAN, the King who introduced Christianity into Hungary and who was crowned by Pope Silvestro II on January 1, 1001. A rather solemn start leads to another war-like passage, ending with some loud crashes. This symbolizes the fact that the body of the pagan Koppany was cut into four pieces, and sent to the four castles of the country as an example. After a quiet, almost religiousintermezzo, the National Hymn of Hungary is introduced. This broad “grandioso†ending also has a symbolic meaning: after ten centuries, Hungary has many reasons to look back on the past with pride, and to look forward to the future with optimism and confidence.

Hear the sounds of marching bands, choirs, and the music of Broadway in this exciting concert march. Inspired by an actual parade in New York, Michael Brand brings us this spectacular original march. Perfect in any setting throughout the year.In June 1997 I was in New York and had a free weekend. On Sunday morning I was awoken early by a great deal of banging and saw that barriers and roadblocks had been erected throughout Central Park. Why? I soon heard the answer: a great parade. When the Americans put together a parade they really mean it! This one lasted 3 hours and brought the center of New York to a standstill. Bands, dancers and choirs marched past in celebration of the Jewish faith. New York Parade is completely original but its starting point in my imagination was a marching band, a choir and Broadway. The marching band starts in the distance, passes by and as it moves away we hear the next block of performers singing, almost chanting, a hymn (called Jewish Song). The groups suddenly turn into Broadway, as a song from an imaginary show intervenes but then the band and choir return in counterpoint and all three themes come together.

Leo Janácek (1854-1928) wrote a large portion of his most distinctive music late in life, following the success of a revised version of his opera Jenufa in 1916. His extensive research of the national folklore had a great impact on his work as a composer. Inspired by a military band performance in a park, the Sinfonietta opens with a military-style fanfare for brass and percussion. It received its commission from a Czech gymnastics association to celebrate the Eighth National Sokol Rally which took place in Prague in the summer of 1926. The Czech Philharmonic gave the first performance on June 26th of that year under the direction of Vaclav Talich. The inner movements provide contrasting melodic and rhythmic material, characterized by rhythmic shifts, abrupt mood changes, and fragments of folk dance. The final movement climbs through a long, intensifying sequence to reprise the opening music, now taken up by the full orchestra. Music for Life was commissioned by the members of Community Band South in Pittsburgh to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The band's motto, Music for a Lifetime, provided the inspiration for the title. It is a work always full of life and vitality, even in its more reflective moments. Because of this, the piece is almost totally melodic, relying little on development or other formal devices. A series of lively melodic statements precedes a slower central section, designed to showcase the band's talented clarinet section. But the moment of reflection is short-lived and the livelier music returns to end the work in the same spirit that it started.

Commissioned to write a piece as a tribute to a horn playing band director friend, the composer decided it would be totally appropriate to weave melodies from Mozart's 3rd horn concerto into the fabric of this mostly original work. This is indeed a celebratory, jubilant overture, with the outer sections being in a jovial 6/8 rhythmic feel, and the slower-tempo 4/4 middle section expressively drawing on Mozart's Concerto Theme. Let your band celebrate and fully experience this musical magic!

Shalom Chaverim is an ancient Hebrew (farewell)song, which was originally sung at the end of a celebration or meeting. It was and is mostly sung as a round. Freely translated the words mean “Goodbye, friends, goodbye and see you again!”. The varying moods at a parting have been captured very well by Andreas Schulte in his arrangement ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’. The composer himself says about the song, ‘Although the melody is in a minor key, the overall atmosphere in the song is positive. one wishes each other all the best. Saying goodbye, however, also hurts. When you slow down the pace of the melody and add ‘blue notes’ in the harmonies, this can be sensed immediately.’Schulte refers here to the first variation. The second variation is very intense with possibly even deeper-felt emotions. ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’ ends on a cheerful and positive note, in fast tempo, and with oriental elements in the melody: ‘L'hitra'ot, Shalom’ (See you again, and farewell!).
