Bleak Forest is a piece for smaller concert bands and offers the musicians above all space to improve their sound and their effect playing. The technical requirements are therefore deliberately kept low. With this piece, the composer won the VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022. Thematically, the work is influenced by the composer's childhood memories. In his hometown there was a dark and mysterious forest, that seemed to the children in the small village to be magical. Without a reasonable explanation, every trip into the woods was exciting and somewhat terrifying. There were tales of dangerous animals, which can be heard at the beginning of the piece, as well as magical beasts. The magic of the forest is depicted musically from bar 70 in the andante section. The snapping of the fingers represents single raindrops. From bar 99 onwards, we hear the trek home, with the occasional moments of trepidation as the children spook each other with their fanciful tales. In the end, though, we arrive safely at home because after all, magical beasts only exist in fairy tales don’t they? Andreas Ziegelbäck studied music education at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and history at the Paris Lodron Universität, Salzburg. In addition to his studies, he trained in ensemble conducting for wind orchestra with conductor and composer Thomas Doss. It was Doss who sparked Ziegelbäck's interest in composing. In 2021, Andreas Ziegelbäck completed his composition studies with Johannes Maria Staud. In 2020, he took part in a brass band composition masterclass in Bern with Oliver Waespi, followed by a premiere by the Swiss Army Brass Band.

The Last Rose of Summer is a popular Irish folksong. The original text was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) and the melody is a traditional air titled The Groves of Blarney. The German composer Friedrich von Flotow (1812-1883) cleverly used this song in his opera Martha, a light-hearted, successful work that is still regularly performed. The melancholy character of The Last Rose of Summer still appeals to many people in the present day and this arrangement by Wil van der Beek certainly does justice to the beauty of the melody. A wonderful item to change the mood of any performance.

Kentish Dances is een suite op basis van dansen uit het Engelse graafschap Kent. Dit graafschap heeft zijn eigen dansmelodieën, wat in Engeland bekend is geworden als ‘country dancing’. Deze danswijsjes waren de bron van ditdriedelige werk van Philip Sparke, waarin levendige en opgewekte melodieën worden afgewisseld door melancholische en zangerige passages. Een betoverend werk!

Wie der Titel schon andeutet, besteht Kentish Dances aus traditionellen Tanzmelodien aus der englischen Grafschaft Kent. Die seit dem 17. Jahrhundert beliebten Volkstänze sind zahlreich überliefert und boten Philip Sparke eine reichhaltige Quelle für dieses dreisätzige Werk, in dem sich lebhafte und beschwingte Melodien, mit melancholischeren Weisen und lieblichen Passagen abwechseln. Kentish Dances (“Danses du Kent”) est une commande du Bromley Youth Music Trust pour le Bromley Youth Concert Band (Orchestre d’Harmonie Junior de Bromley) placé sous la direction de Michael Purton. L’œuvre a été donnée en création par la formation dédicataire, le 16 mars 2008 au St John’s, Smith Square Londres.La ville de Bromley est située dans le comté du Kent l’extrémité sud-est de l’Angletrerre. Le Kent possède un riche patrimoine culturel traditionnel et notamment de nombreux airs de danses comme beaucoup d’autres régions anglaises. Connue en Angleterre sous le nom de country dancing, la contredanse fut plébiscitée par les classes moyenne et aiséeanglaises la période élisabéthaine, supplantant les formelles gaillardes et pavanes en vigueur la cour royale. La contredanse connut une telle notoriété que de nombreux ouvrages lui furent consacrés tels que l’English Dancing Master de Thomas Playford, publié en 1651, qui constitue la plus importante source de mélodies de danses traditionnelles léguée la postérité.Michael Purton, Directeur du Bromley Youth Music Trust, suggèra l’idée d’une œuvre basée sur des airs de danses typiques du Kent. Philip Sparke accepta et composa cette suite de danses en trois mouvements. Le premier mouvement est construit sur un moto perpetuo qui développe deux mélodies pétillantes en 6/8 : Dover Castle et The Fair Maid of Wickham. Le mouvement central s’articule autour de l’air Blackheath dont la sombre mélodie contraste de façon charmante et opportune avec la mélodie Bromley Bells. Le finale expose les sémillants We Are All Right at Canterbury et Ramsgate Pier. La valse cadencée Northdown Waltz offre un délicieux contraste expressif.

Cole Porter was one of the great masters of Broadway musicals during the thirties, forties and fifties, with So in Love, from the musical Kiss Me Kate, being one of his best loved works. It has been recorded by many artists including Bing Crosby, Lulu, Shirley Bassey and Julie Andrews, however it is the Ella Fitzgerald version that is best known. This jazzy musical classic can now be enjoyed by your brass band with this excellent new arrangement.

L’auteur-compositeur américain Cole Porter (1891-1964) est initié au piano dès son plus jeune ge. Plus tard, il suit un cursus universitaire Yale puis Paris. Sa vie a suscité bien des commentaires. En 1918, il épouse Linda Lee Thomas. Le couple partage sa vie entre Paris, Venise, New York et Hollywood où Cole Porter se consacre la composition de musiques de films. Le mariage est heureux en dépit de l’homosexualité notoire de Cole Porter. En 1937, il est victime d’un grave accident qui le laisse handicapé vie. Cole Porter restera meurtri par cette expérience. Son épouse meurt en 1954. Quatre ans plus tard, il est amputé de la jambe droite. Son appétit de vivre et saflamme créatrice s’éteignent. Il meurt en 1964.Cole Porter a composé de superbes chansons et comédies musicales dont certaines sont encore très appréciées de nos jours. Il suffit d’évoquer I’ve Got You Under My Skin ou Every Time We Say Goodbye. Sa musique a été reprise par de nombreux artistes : des crooners et grandes vedettes du jazz telles que Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald et Oscar Peterson aux cantatrices Renée Fleming et Kiri Te Kanawa. Great Britain has had a National Youth Brass Band since 1952, which caters for players between the ages of 12 and 18 and has produced many outstanding instrumentalists in its distiguished history. An exciting development took place in July 2004 when the first summer course of a new National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain, for players between the ages of 8 and 13, was held in Bromsgrove, Worcester. Renowned cornet soloist and conductor Lynda Nicholson was appointed music director and she commissioned Philip Sparke to write a piece for this inaugural course. The Pioneers was the result. The title refers to the fact that the NCBBGB was starting out on a new adventure but is also a salute to the bicentenary of an expedition by two of the composer's heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Mississippi and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which doubled the size of USA. They set out, as the “Corps of Discovery,” from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804; not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in three years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat.

Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself, after the Greek language, meaning Nowhereland and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However, Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brasssection remind of Wagner's music.
