Julius Fucik (1872-1916) was born in Prague, Czech Republic. He studied under Antonin Dvorák and at a young age played in military bands and later became bandmaster, a profession he practiced in various cities with many bands. In 1913 he settled in Berlin where he started his own music publishing house. As a composer Fucik is known for his light entertaining music however he also wrote chamber music, songs, choral works, a mass, a requiem and an unfinished opera. Many of his works have fallen into oblivion but many of his marches such as Einzug der Gladiatoren, Regimentskinder and Florentiner Marsch are still often played. With the concert overture Marinarella, Fucik takes us toan imaginary seaside resort on a beautiful spring day. Marinarella, a girl of the sea, accompanies us on our stroll. Leisurely walking couples on the boulevard, the murmur of the sea, fragments of a waltz melody from a café and a concert band performing a promenade concert pass you by. A fantastic opening work for any concert.

Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire. The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle.

The American state of Arkansas is often called 'the natural state' and 'the land of opportunity.' This piece belongs to Jacob de Haan's series of musical montages depicting various states in the USA, including Dakota, Oregon and Virginia. Arkansas is a suite in three movements based on a well-known native American folk song. It appears as a ballade, variations and finally accompanies a jazzy rhythm. The folk song helps provide continuity throughout the three movements. A perfect addition to any concert.Arkansas kent meerdere bijnamen. This piece is dedicated to all the citizens who live, have lived, and will live in the US town of Algona, who commissioned the work to celebrate itâ??s 150th anniversary. With dark-tinted tones (low drums, heavy brass), this overture begins with a primitive sacred feel, it seems as if centuries-old Indian singing is heard once more. Gradually the sound becomes clearer and brighter as the same theme travels throughout the band in various guises and variants. Imposing tutti passages then give the band the chance to lavishly shine. This bright and catchy overture radiates spontaneous energy and as it features every section of the band all the players as well as the listenersare continually surprised and captivated. The German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his Academic Fesival Overture in the summer of 1880, together with the Tragic Overture. The occasion was the honorary degree which Brahms had received a year before from the University of Breslau. Initially, Brahms had sent a thank-you note, but he was expected to express his gratitude with a composition. The premiere took place on 4 January, 1881 - conducted by the composer himself - in Breslau. For this sparkling work, Brahms used various German student songs as a basis in an inventive way - and a little jestingly. Owing to the accessible development, lyrical warmth, humor, and persuasiveness, the Academic Festival Overtureis still a popular concert work. This transcription for concert band, which has been written by Tohru Takahashi, does justice to the original composition.

Salamander Symphony is a three-movement work for symphonic wind band in which the city of Kornwestheim, situated in Baden-Württemberg, occupies centre stage. It is the name of the well-known shoe factory that was established there in 1899 and that symbolizes the industrial and social development of the city. In the symphony, we find various references to the mythological meaning of salamanders: they are vigorous creatures that contain the soul of fire. Without salamanders there would not be any fire. Glorioso was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the ‘Siena Wind Orchestra’. The work opens after a short aleatoric intro, with an energetic and brassy ‘one tone fanfare’. The note F acts as an omnipresent note, and is also used as a bridge into the second, rather static movement. A noble sounding theme leads to an impressive climax, shortly followed by the spectacular and virtuoso finale, which is built on the musical elements that have been heard before. Stylistically, this sparkling finale is clearly influenced by Dmitri Shostakovich, hence the use of the famous signature used by the Russian Master: C D E flat B (or C flat). A glorious finish to a special workthat highlights various facets of the modern concert band.

Wind in the Reeds was commissioned by Deena Draycott in memory of John Watson, an army bandsman, teacher and bassoonist. Wind in the Reeds is both a tribute and lasting memorial to John. The piece is largely pastoral in nature, evoking images conjured up by the ‘play on words’ in the title, but includes a faster central section which exploits other aspects of the character of the bassoon. Transitions between the various sections of the piece are achieved through a series of accompanied cadenzas for the soloist. Wind in the Reeds est une commande de Deena Draycott en mémoire de John Watson musicien dans l’armée, enseignant et bassoniste. Philip Sparke's Sinfonietta No. 4 is comprised of three parts that are played as an uninterrupted whole. The _x001F_first movement begins with a lyrical fugato passage, framing a brisker and more rhythmical middle section. The second movement is slower and contains a long and expressive euphonium solo. The third movement is a salute to the sponsor of this commission: various percussion instruments conjure up sounds reminiscent of a carpenter's workshop, accompanied by a unison orchestral passage in a scat style.
