Commissioned by The United States Marine Band and premiered in 1987, Clare Grundman's Concord has remained a staple in the wind band repertoire. The middle section of this work is a beautiful chorale based on the early hymn “America†composed by William Billings. Adapted here as a stand alone piece for younger bands, this is a stunning example of lyric writing and glorious harmonies. Dur: 1:40.

Drawing on his many years of experience building nationally acclaimed band programs and also his work as a successful guest conductor and clinician, Richard Saucedo has created a much-needed set of key-based chorales. These chorales incorporate the concept of drones (included on every part), and in addition to helping your ensemble focus on tuning these are great for developing tone, balance and phrasing. Vol 1 includes three chorales: Bb major, D minor, Eb major.

The opening Chorale section of this very appealling beginning band piece introduces the theme that is then used in the Canon that follows. Skillfully designed to pass the melody to every section, this is a very rewarding piece for beginning groups. First published in 1984.

Using the concept of drones as well as tuning hints written into both the score and parts, this volume of chorales will help students understand more of the tuning process and how it feels as well as how it sounds. (Keys: Db Major, C Minor, C Major).

Written in a sophisticated and dynamic style, this work from James Curnow is more impressive sounding than the easy grade level would indicate. Opening with a rhythmic and intense tocatta, this theme is contrasted with a sustained and lyric chorale section. Both themes are combined at the end for a powerful and rewarding finish.

Johann Sebastian Bach schrieb viele wundervolle Choräle.

Jacob de Haan was commissioned to write Choral Music a concert band from Dinxperlo (Netherlands). This band gave the work its premiere in 1997 during the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. Choral Music is based on the chorale Sollt ich meinem Gott nicht singen by the seventeenth century German composer Johann Schop. Contrary to the title, Choral Music has nothing in common with a traditional choral arrangement. This contrasting work has a flashing beginning and only much later following on several thematic changes does Jacob de Haan allow the chorale melody to develop into its original form. Following this episode the chorale becomes a toccata developing into a whirlwind finish.

During his short lifetime Max Reger (1873-1916) was a prolific composer with many of his best known works being composed for organ. The ten chorale preludes in this selection are from his set of Thirty Short Chorale Preludes Op.135a composed as short voluntaries for liturgical use rather than for recitals in these arrangements Philip Sparke has kept this in mind and each prelude can be performed with minimal instrumentation for those occasions where a small band is needed. They also make great pieces for band warm-ups or studies in intonation, sound and balance.

As the title suggests, this piece comprises a set of variations on an original chorale, which is presented in the opening bars. The chorale uses the dark middle and lower sections of the band and is extended with minor variations until a pause leads to the first real variation, marked Vivo. This is in the form of a moto perpetuo. The second variation is a beautiful Andante introduced by a solo clarinet. Following a full band climax the final variation opens with quiet, nervous energy until its main theme is introduced. The chorale makes a brief appearance until the main theme reappears. This leads to a triumphant final augmented statement of the chorale theme, decorated by theflorid clarinet theme in the upper woodwinds. A dazzling new concert work. This set of chorales was written to embrace a wide range of musical concepts, allowing directors multiple opportunities for working on ensemble sound, intonation, and phrasing. Each chorale includes various tempo and dynamic markings, while additional elements (such as fermatas) are introduced throughout. These chorales will work in a variety of situations - from beginning band (the first chorales use only 6 notes) to accomplished middle school band. Two mallet parts are included - an easier part and a more advanced part that includes multiple notes and rolls. In addition, an auxiliary percussion part is included so students may secure proper techniques on triangle, suspended cymbal, and crash cymbals. Finally, the piano part is useful for directors wishing to either supplement the ensemble or assist during singing.Teaching suggestions are included for each chorale. Several applications and techniques are provided, along with further possibilities for more advanced groups. Certainly, varying techniques may be applied to each chorale. Directors are encouraged to diversify for fresh and interesting rehearsals.

This quiet piece with its broad tones was originally written for brass band on request of Robert Leveugle, chairman of the composers own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgium). The direct cause was a visit to the beautiful cathedral of theEnglish city Canterbury, in which so many fine compositions sounded throughout the centuries. Later on, Jan Van der Roost rescored this piece for symphonic wind band, exploring the full richness of colours of this formation. Besides solo phrases forseveral instruments, there are some massive tutti passages making the wind orchestra sound like a majestic organ. By the way: an ad libitum organ part adds an extra richness, colour and power to this piece, making it sound even more broad andgrand.
