This theme becomes the cornerstone of the entire work leading the listener on a journey that is at times reflective and at others bold and broad. Perfect for contest and festival performance, this piece contains all of the signature styling that has made Sean O'Loughlin's works some of the most popular for bands today.

Fanfare; Reminiscence and Celebration is in 2 movements. I. Fanfare The opening of a concert hall is always an exciting event, introducing the hall to the performers and the performers to the hall each testing the capacities of the other. I decided to have the ensemble greet and salute the new Ruby Diamond Hall with a Fanfare that includes offstage brass players in 3 different locations in the audience. II. Reminiscence and Celebration The 2nd movement begins in a reflective mood. As I thought about Ruby Diamond Hall, where I had performed as a teenager, I remembered people, particularly many mentors with whom I have performed here, who are gone, but whose gifts and spirits are still with us. The theater has a beautiful tradition of leaving one light bulb burning all night long for the spirits of the actors who have graced that stage. While I wanted my 2nd movement to acknowledge that sense of continuity of past and present, the piece ends in celebration of the new. Perhaps all artists feel a strong connection with the past, but we work in and for the present and we build for the future.Fanfare; Reminiscence and Celebration is in 2 movements. I. This piece was commissioned by Japan Ground Self Defense Force Western Army Band. In the programme note for the premiere the composer wrote: I am always impressed by the expansive earth and sparkling ocean scenery when I come to Kyushu. I have met many local people here and they are all expressive and energetic. I wrote this dramatic piece to convey to the whole of Japan the memory of my experience here, swaying in the west wind. I wrote this, hoping that the Self Defense Force will forge closer ties with the community through this piece. Swaying in the West Wind revele une profondeur d'expression poignante.

Program Notes Elephant is, of course, inspired by the incredible mammals of the same name. Their column-like legs, long trunks, and massive presence will never cease to amaze; however, it's their trumpeting that makes them stand out as the instrumentalists of the animal kingdom! In this selection, an elephant's slow gate and general demeanor are represented by a methodical tempo and lumbering texture. Woodwinds will enjoy the opportunity to perform grace notes while Elephant also offers exposure to flams for young percussionists. At m. 33 the trumpets and horns recreate an elephant call after slipping brown paper bags, or lunch-bag mutes, over their bells (in their bells for horn players). For the trumpet players, the mutes can be enhanced with an additional balled-up piece of paper placed at the bottom of the bag prior to slipping it over the bell. Horns should ball up the bag itself and experiment with placement to create the most realistic tones without stopping the instrument. While specific pitches are noted, making the best elephant sounds should prioritized. Young students always look forward to experimenting with mutes, and this selection offers an inexpensive and creative way to do so at a young age. Note to the Conductor This piece can be used to introduce or reinforce the finer points of staccato playing. While many students know to play these notes short in length, they may need reminding that they should also be played lightly. This also may allow for opportunities in emphasizing contrasting articulation styles that are in this piece. Younger students will likely need a reasonable amount of practice in successfully using the lunch-bag mutes. Allowing additional rehearsal time for this is recommended.Program Notes Elephant is, of course, inspired by the incredible mammals of the same name. Gippsland is a rich farming district in the state of Victoria, located in Australia. Gippsland was reportedly written as a mark of appreciation to that district for beginning a band association in 1910, even though a year later, it appears to have died – a most inglorious death through decay. Lithgow was always starting bands and touring with them, so he always had appreciated those who did the same.

I love to look up at the sky. When I see contrails, I wonder where they are going, and it reminds me of my hometown. Because of the pandemic, many people are still unable to visit their loved ones, and I thought they would want to fly away as soon as possible. This is the concept of this piece. You may be thinking about the places you want to go to or the family and friends you want to see, and you may feel excited, or you may feel lonely. At such times, the sky is always watching over us with its great receptive power. The sky gives us energy and courage. When I'm in a cheerful mood, I just want to flap my wings like a bird to the sky and fly away!.I love to look up at the sky. This stunning work celebrates the men and women, past and present, who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Jerry Brubaker was the Chief Music Arranger with the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. Using mostly original material, Brubaker uses snippets of the various U.S. Armed Forces anthems to bring this wonderful tribute to life. The primary melody of Proudly They Served is singable, respectful, and memorable. The tune comfortably welcomes segments of all the major service songs as they make their appearance throughout. First performed by Rancho Cordova (CA) River City Concert Band, Proudly They Served makes a perfect selection for Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or any concert with a patriotic theme. (4:46).

Much of the thematic material for this lovely work by Holst is derived from the opening legato melodies provided by soli horns. The themes morph into several different dance feels throughout the remainder of the piece always keeping you guessing what will come next. Geoffrey Brand has done a masterful job of adapting the score for the modern concert band.Holst's original version of 'The Morning of the Year' was written in 1926-27 as a choral ballet. It was the first work to be commissioned by the music department of the BBC. The first concert performance was on 17 March 1927 at the Royal Albert Hall, London conducted by the composer. In 1979 Colin Matthews and Imogen Holst edited this concert version with the approval of the publisher and G&I Holst Ltd. The chorus has been left out and several of the dances have been shortened. Some additional percussion was introduced to suggest the sounds the dancers would have provided in a stage performance. Geoffrey Brand arranged the work for concert band in 1995 with permission from G&I Holst Ltd.
