This celebratory work, which Philip Sparke wrote for the 20th anniversary of the Nottingham Concert Band, starts with a hymn-like theme played as a fanfare in the brass. With a change of mood from ‘solemn’ to ‘merry’ and back to ‘majestic’, together with an unusual orchestration, in which may different instruments feature and in which at points the entire wind orchestra shimmers in tutti passages, A Nottingham Festival is a real pleasure for musicians and public alike.

Prelude to a Pageant was commissioned by Woodley Concert Band to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2014. Celebratory in nature, Prelude to a Pageant includes a famous musical link to The Reading Rota (Sumer is icumen in), a manuscript dating from around 1240, discovered nearby Reading Abbey. This lively tune appears early in the work, after an arresting, rhythmic opening and expressive slower section, and also forms the final climax.

An Ancient World, by Adrian B. Sims, imagines the ruins of a past civilization. The work explores the mysterious and fascinating landscapes that were once so beautiful. Reawakened in a new light, the world reignites with energy. After a final mourning of that which was lost and can never be restored, (measures 95--130), the work lives out the essence of ancient royalty with one last celebratory musical statement. (7:00).

Commissioned to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the state of West Virginia, Forever Free incorporates indigenous elements of the state's musical heritage, capturing a robust and celebratory spirit. Cast in a single movement in three sections, the title is inspired by the state motto, “Montani semper liberi” (“Mountaineeers forever free”). The work is unified at the outset and closing by a ceremonial fanfare that is based on thematic figures from the state song West Virginia Hills. A contrasting middle section features a lyric variant accompanied by a militaristic snare drum and timpani cadence, before all thematic elements are combined for the buoyant and festive conclusion. Duration: 4:25.

Commissioned to write a piece as a tribute to a horn playing band director friend, the composer decided it would be totally appropriate to weave melodies from Mozart's 3rd horn concerto into the fabric of this mostly original work. This is indeed a celebratory, jubilant overture, with the outer sections being in a jovial 6/8 rhythmic feel, and the slower-tempo 4/4 middle section expressively drawing on Mozart's Concerto Theme. Let your band celebrate and fully experience this musical magic!

Canticle uses melodic motives from St. Francis of Assisi's hymn, All Creatures of Our God and King. It opens with a festive fanfare and proceeds to a lively A section. The middle section uses the motif in a relative minor before concluding with a majestic celebratory ending. All instruments have fun, exciting and challenging parts. An ideal programming choice for concert, contest or festival performances.

Golden Winds was commissioned by Jugendblasorchester Schramberg, Germany, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2012. They gave the premiere, conducted by Andreas Hirt, at their Christmas concert that year. The work opens with a nervously energetic theme in the lower woodwinds, which is developed in canon and builds to climax for the whole band. The mood subsides to introduce a meditative section featuring first the clarinets and then a rich, chorale-like theme which grows into a passionate tutti. This then leads to the main body of the piece, a rhythmic vivo, which introduces its main theme quietly before it is taken up by the full band. A brief bridge passage thenintroduces a muscular second subject which develops until the bridge passage reappears to lead to a repeat of the main theme. This is transformed to herald a return of the opening bars of the piece, which now bring the work to a celebratory close.

This arrangement of a splendid Bach chorus first used in the secular Cantata 207 is perhaps better known in its later version from Cantata 207a, Auf, schmetternde Töne der muntern Trompeten (“Come, resounding tones of merry trumpets”). Much of the music for this cantata is celebratory and lushly scored for a large orchestra including trumpets, oboes d'amore and flutes, making it an ideal vehicle for concert band.

In this work the composer follows the models of Mendelssohn (Fourth Symphony), Elgar (In the South: Alassio) and Respighi (Roman Trilogy) by using instrumental color to produce a sunny piece, following a holiday in southern Italy, and describing a festival day in Naples. The work starts with brilliant woodwinds and percussion accompanying an opening celebratory theme in the brass. The mood subsides until a trumpet intones a new theme in the style of a Neapolitan serenade, taken up by the whole band. This is interrupted by a passing parade (the local band is not particularly accomplished!) but this disappears into the distance. A vivace follows in typical Neapolitan 6/8 meter, representing the festive dancing which characterises the local celebration. A change of mood is introduced by a horn chorus, but the dancing resumes and eventually joins with the horn theme to bring festivities to a close.

Just based on its title, this piece has to be celebratory and up-beat, which it is! It opens with a stately fanfare, first played on the low brass before the entire band joins in. This gives way to a contrasting lyrical theme which develops until it joins up with the fanfare to complete the opening section. A lively and heavily syncopated vivo follows, cast as a traditional march, complete with a 'bass strain' and trio. After the original march theme returns, a climax leads back to a reprise of the majestic opening, which brings the piece to an appropriately triumphant close.

The work has a military feel in the opening fanfare, but settles down to an angular melody with frequent changes in time signature. There is the possibility of adding extra drummers near the end - a drum corps was used behind the Band in the first performance making a stunning effect.PANACHE was commissioned by Lt. Peter Rutterford who was then Director of Music for the Band of the Royal Marines (FOSNI). Peter was about to leave the Rosyth and wanted to have a celebratory work for his departure. The resulting piece was titled by him and to reflect his outgoing personality, and the first performance was given by Lt. Rutterford with the Royal Marines Band in the Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline, Scotland.
