Glitter and glamour, good-looking people, a lot of Bling Bling and fast cars images like these will cross our minds when we think of the movie world. However, reality proves to be different : as a rule, a tremendous amount of work will have been done on the set before a film is ready to be shown on the big screen. A visit to an actual movie set inspired John Emerson Blackstone to write a composition bearing the same name. He had both seen a number of characteristic attributes and heard the typical phrases used in film making, and he incorporated them into ‘On the Movie Set’ . In the first part, ‘The Clapboard’, a ‘director’s assistant’ is supposed to shout “Quieton the set’” and “Action!”, as is done before a real scene is shot. Subsequently, in order to create the right atmosphere, the clacking of a ‘Clapboard’ should be heard. During a romantic scene we should be transported to another world by means of sweet sounds in the background, so romantic music is of course heard in the next part, ‘Love Scene’. At the end of a long working day ‘It’s a wrap’ is called on the set to inform everyone that the filming on that day is completed. Now there is only one more thing left to dream of : an Oscar..... Perf. Note: The use of the right props will add to the performance and appreciation of ‘On the Movie Set’. A red carpet and a glamorous reception should give your audience the feeling they are attending a real ‘opening night’! ‘Glamour’ en ‘Glitter’, mooie mensen, veel ‘bling bling’ en snelle auto’s. Zomaar een aantal zaken waar we aan denken als het om de filmwereld gaat. Maar voordat de film klaar is voor de bioscoop moet er doorgaans hard gewerkt wordentijdens het draaien op de filmset. Een bezoekje op een filmset inspireerde John Emerson Blackstone tot het schrijven van ‘On the Movieset’. Hij zag een aantal zeer karakteristieke attributen en hoorde kreten die hij verwerktein deze compositie. In het eerste deel: ‘The Clapboard’, is het de bedoeling dat de assistent van de regisseur ‘de bekende kreten’ (Quiet on the set of And Action!) roept, voordat er een take opgenomen wordt. Daarnamoet natuurlijk met een ‘Clapboard’ geklakt worden. Bij een ‘Love Scene’ hoort uiteraard sfeerverhogende romantische muziek. Want zwijmelen bij een film gaat nu eenmaal niet zonder zoete klanken. Aan het einde van eenlange dag klinkt altijd ‘It’s a wrap’. Dit betekent dat het laatste shot van de dag gemaakt is. Nu maar hopen dat er een oscar in het verschiet ligt. Perf. Note: Het gebruik van de juiste rekwisieten zalde uitvoering en waardering van ‘On the Movieset’ ten goede komen. Een rode loper en een chique ontvangst zullen uw gasten een echt ‘premi?re’ gevoel geven.

The Odyssee tells the story of Odysseus, the undaunted hero. In times long ago the blind poet Homer wrote this famous epic. The Odyssey follows the Iliad, the story of the bloody war between the Greek and the Trojans. This battle endsafter ten years thanks to the Odysseys famous trick. the Trojan Horse. The Odyssey is not a war epic, but a story about perseverance, loyalty, adventure, and the survival instinct of its ingenious hero. In The Odyssey, Homer describes howOdysseus, the king of Ithaca, had to endure another ten years of affliction after the ten years of war in Troy before he could finally return to his home land. During those years, his wife, Penelope, had to try and keep her many admirers away.These men not only wanted het hand but also the kingship. To prove her husbands worth, she played a trick: As soon as I have finished weaving this shroud for my father-in-law, Laertes, I will choose one of you to become my husband, she promisedthem. But during the night, she secretly loosened what she had woven during the day, prolonging the time until Odysseus would finally return. After twenty long years, when he finally stood at the door, she wondered: Is this really my husband? Ishe an imposter? Cunningly, she asked him to move the bed, because only she and her husband know that the bed was immovable and was build around an old three trunk! Odysseus was deeply moved: this really was his wife, his Penelope! Nearly threethousands years later, the loyalty and strength of this character, and all the dangerous adventures that Odysseus survived thanks to courage and intelligence, still moves us today. Odyssee by Jan Bosveld is not just an adventure story, butrather a characteristic piece in which memories of Homers story can be heard. The composition opens with a firm, stirring theme describing our hero, Odysseus, in detail: This man is not to be taken lightly. The further development of thisshort introduction completes this character sketch: trustworthy, perseverant, and a genius. After that we can picture Odysseus on the lonely beach of Ogygia. Do the trumpets depict his memories of the war of Troy? Does he think of his wife, as werecognise the weaving loom of Penelope in the murmuring eighth? In the solemn, plaintive part that follows, we can imagine Penelope feeling lonely, sitting in the womens room with her servants.One of the girls plays the harp, but that does notclear the sombre atmosphere. Then we can imagine seeing the sorceress Circe, who changed Odysseus men into swine. After she gives a simple magic sign something follows that reminds us of the sound of pigs grunting. Then the Odysseus theme resounds:the hero comes to savi his comrades. Assisted by Hermes, he forces Circe to lift the spell. The piece ends the same way as it began, with an animated theme: Odysseus is still the same, undefeated and not to be taken lighty!Het muzikale relaas van de Griekse schrijver Homerus over de held Odyssee in een karakterstuk vol herinneringen. Een stevig opgewekt thema symboliseert de grootsheid van Odyssee en zijn karaktertrekken - betrouwbaar, volhardenden vernuftig. De tegenslagen welke hij tegenkomt en in het tweede tragische gedeelte dreigen te escaleren, nemen in het derde snelle gedeelte bij zijn verschijning toch weer een positieve wending. Nijmegenaar Jan Bosveld bewijstin dit originele werk dat hij op de hoogte is van de onmogelijkheden, maar vooral de ongekende mogelijkheden van muzikanten uit de lagere afdelingen.

‘Jubilant Prelude’ is an orchestration of the ‘Preludium over Psalm 150’ originally composed for organ by Toon Hagen. Since 1998 Toon Hagen has been organ-player of the ‘Grote or Sint Michaëlskerk’ in Zwolle (the Netherlands). He has written several ‘contemporary’ compositions for organ.‘Jubilant Prelude’ has a capricious character by the use of irregular measures and its many measure changes. The structure of the Prelude is that of a fugue and is based on motives from the psalm.After the first climax, which is both dynamic and harmonic, the theme in the Andante Jubiloso is clearly audible and it is alternated with erratic motifs. Tension increases until at last the psalm itself isheard in all its glory. The melody of the psalm sounds as a cantus firmus in tenor register, with motifs in ornamentation for saxophones, bugles and trumpets. The finale, like the prelude is capricious and vehement.The instrumentation for concert band was made by Wim Rouw. It is particularly colourful and has a surprising role for the percussion section. ‘Jubilant Prelude’ is een orkestbewerking van het oorspronkelijk voor orgel geschreven ‘Preludium over Psalm 150’ van de hand van Toon Hagen. This composition of Marc Cunningham has four parts, and takes place on a sunny day in a picturesque town. 1. Promenade Many people walk through the city. The band passes through the streets. People are strolling along the avenues and amorous couples are sitting on a park bench. 2. Lovey Dovey One of these couples is knee-deep in love. 3. Crispy and Creamy Here the contrasts between a crisp staccato section in two-four time signature and a smooth legato section in three-four time signature are depicted. Is Crispy the boy and Creamy the girl? 4. Farewell In the last particle the couple says goodbye. We still think back tothe walk through the city. It sounds a little less happy now. Not everyone is good at saying goodbye, sometimes a tear flows. Deze compositie van Mark Cunningham heeft vier delen, en speelt zich af op een zonnige dag in een pittoresk stadje. 1. Promenade Veel mensen maken een wandeling door de stad. De fanfare trekt door de straten. Mensen lopente flaneren langs de lanen en verliefde stelletjes zitten op een bankje in het park. 2. Lovey-dovey Eén van deze stelletjes is tot over de oren verliefd. 3. Crispy and Creamy Hier worden de tegenstellingentussen een knapperig staccato gedeelte in 2/4 maatsoort en een vloeiend legato gedeelte in 3/4 maatsoort uitgebeeld. Is Crispy de jongen en Creamy het meisje? 4. Farewell In het laatste deeltje nemen ze afscheid van elkaar.We denken nog even terug aan de wandeling door de stad. Het klinkt nu wel wat minder vrolijk. Niet iedereen is goed in afscheid nemen, er vloeit wel eens een traantje.

An unintended play on words on the title of Mozart's famous composition forms the basis of this solo piece. It was composed in 2004 by the Scottish composer, Bruce Fraser, and features a solo for flugel or cornet. It is not a very difficult piece for both the soloist and the band, but is that always necessary? A lovely, highly recommended intermezzo for your concert. Een 'onbedoelde' woordspeling met een bekend werk van Mozart staat aan de basis van dit solowerkje. Het werk is in 2004 gecomponeerd door de Schotse componist Bruce Fraser en brengt de altsaxofoon als solo-instrument voor het voetlicht.Voor solist(e) en orkest niet erg moeilijk maar moet dat dan? The 'Admiral Spirit' is the pride of the Navy. The ship is at sea, there is no wind, the sun is shining. The crew are busy piloting the ship into port in prime condition. The admiral himself will inspect the vessel. The first movement (Allegro Con Spirito) gives musical expression to the majestic ship and its toiling crew. In the second movement (Andante), the ship sails into port. It has been polished and technically everything is in order. The admiral will be proud when he inspects the ship. Third movement (Allegro Molto): the captain and his crew are nervous (modulations) while working at the 'finishing touch'. The Navy Band is ready to receive the admiral !. Hemay be proud of his flagship. De bemanning van het marineschip Admiral Spirit is druk bezig om het schip in optimale conditie de haven binnen te loodsen, de admiraal gaat namelijk het schip zelf inspecteren. In het eerste deel (Allegro con spirito) horen we een verklanking van het majestueuze schip en de zwoegende bemanning. Hoe beeldend zijn de emmertjes water welke overboord gaan (trombones). In het tweede deel (Andante) vaart het schip de haven binnen. Het schip is gepoetst en technisch is alles in orde. Derde deel (Allegro molto): De kapitein en zijn bemanning zijn nerveus (modulaties) en er wordt aan de finishing touch gewerkt. De Navy Band staat klaar om de admiraal te ontvangen! Whereas ‘Auld Lang Syne’ may be considered the best-known Scottish song ever, yet at the same time it is an obscure one, for there are but few people who know the complete text by heart. After the familiar ‘Should auld acquaintance be forgot .....‘ many people take their refuge to lyrics like ‘rum tee dum ta dee ..... lah, lah, lah ........... for auld lang syne’. Even in Scotland only a handful of persons know the entire text and are able to give a correct rendering of it. The current lyrics have been attributed to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Burns, however, he did not write the whole poem : after he had heard an old man sing the centuries-old Scotchballad, he wrote it down and added a number of stanzas (1788). Historical research teaches us that the ballad served many purposes, both political and religious. Nowadays, ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is sung as a Christmas Carol and it is also sung on New Year’s Eve at the turning of the year. Apart from that, though, the song is also sung on many other occasions sometimes with different lyrics, which usually have Love, Friendship and/or Parting as their themes, as these go well with the fascinating melody. In this arrangement a low-sounding solo instrument is central. The harmonization in the accompaniment fits in perfectly with the sentiments this song will evoke. For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We’ll take a cup of kindness yet, For auld lang syne. Misschien wel het meest bekende Schotse lied, maar tegelijkertijd ook het minst bekende, er zijn er maar weinig mensen die de tekst mee kunnen zingen. Rob Goorhuis wrote his Variations on a Pentatonic Theme (1987) for the Royal Wind band of Thorn, conductor Jan Cober. The work consists of five character variations on a pentatonic (five-tone) theme. The basic elements of the theme are the descending minor third and the descending major second, which in the course of the composition build up to a broad melody, unfolding itself in the final variation. The first variation resembles minimal music in its repetitive rhythmic motives. The second variation is explosive in character: rapid broken chords provide a background for soft solo motifs. The third variation is a quiet intermezzo on a slow chorale theme, creatingtwo contrasting moods. The fourth variation is a light-hearted scherzo. The final variation is a brilliant finale with all the necessary ingredients, or, in the composer's words, the works Testpiece WMC 2005 Concert Division. Les Marteaux de La Marine was composed in 1999 as a commission by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The composition contains three static elements which interchange. Static in this case means that development of the material isnot pursued (by the composer). The first element with which the piece begins is tranquil and colourful. The second element is sharp and incisive, while the third expresses energy. In all elements a repeated tone is the starting point whichexplains the hammers in the works title.The instrumentation is richly variegated with a harp also determining the palette of colours in the slower movements. The composition opens with an atmospheric Larghetto containing fine harmonies in thesoft and subtly moving wood-winds. The introduction breathes an impressionistic atmosphere in which expressive cantilenas and soloistic agile motifs stand out. A strong setting is followed by an Allegro virtuoso containing fast motifs contrasted withshort and rhythmic stars of the various instrumental sections. Trumpets and horns add a virtuoso bugle-call motif. After a short stringendosection, the transparent Larghetto returns with a varied setting of the opening elements. The beautifulleading roles in this section are reserved for cornet (trumpet) and horn. Subsequently, the flashing Vivo starts with continuous movements in triplets from both wood-winds and brass. Next, the opening Allegro re-appears once again and thus LesMarteaux de la Marine ends with a fast and virtuoso climax. Les Marteaux de La Marine was selected as a compulsory grade 6 contest piece for symphonic bands in the Netherlands.Les marteaux de la marine werd in 1999 gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Marinierskapel van de Koninklijke Marine. De compositie kent drie statische elementen, elkaar afwisselend. Statisch wil in dit geval zeggen dat er geen ontwikkeling vanhet materiaal wordt nagestreefd. Het eerste element waarmee het stuk begint is rustig en kleurrijk. Het tweede element is vinnig en scherp terwijl het derde energie verbeeldt. In alle elementen is de herhaalde toon het uigangspunt waarmee dehamers (martaux) verklaard kunnen worden. De instrumentatie is rijk geschakeerd waarbij in de langzame gedeelten een harp medebepalend is voor het kleurenpalet. De compositie vangt aan met een sfeervol Larghetto met fraaie harmonieën in hetzachte, subtiel bewegende, houtregister. De inleiding ademt een impressionistische sfeer uit, waarbij expressieve cantilenes en solistische beweeglijke motieven naar voren komen. Dan volgt een virtuoos Allegro met snelle motieven afgezet doorkorte, ritmische inzetten van de diverse instrumentengroepen. De trompetten en hoorns voegen een virtuoos signaalmotief toe. Na en kort stringendo-gedeelte keert het transparante Larghetto terug met een gevarieerde zetting van de beginelementen. Decornet (trompet) en hoorn vervullen in dit gedeelte een fraaie hoofdrol. Vervolgens zet het flitsende Vivo in met voortdurende trioolbewegingen in zowel hout als koper. Vervolgens duikt het Allegro van het begin nog op en Les marteaux de la marinebesluit met een snelle en virtuoze climax.Gobelin Music Publications.

The title Whistle for a Penny can have different meanings, but brings especially to mind the difficult relationship between art and money… After a short introduction, the main theme is heard. This theme is an excellent tune to whistle, by the way. After lots of variation in the instrumentation, as well as contrasting melodies and themes, the finale sees a return to the opening bars of the composition. Kunst en geld? Helaas gaat dat niet altijd even goed samen...En dat is waar deze titel naar verwijst. Maar ook naar het feit dat uw publiek met dit werk uitstekend kan meefluiten! Na een korte inleiding horen we het hoofdthema; hétmoment om mee te doen! Na veel afwisseling in de instrumentatie, contrasterende melodieën en thema’s keren we terug naar de inleidende maten.Der Titel Whistle for a Penny (‘Pfeife für einen Pfennig’) kann auf verschiedene Weise gedeutet werden, ist aber auch sicherlich ein Verweis auf das problematische Verhältnis zwischen Kunst und Geld...Nach einer kurzen Einleitung erklingt in diesem Konzertmarsch das Hauptthema, das man ausgezeichnet mitpfeifen kann. Nach viel Abwechslung in der Instrumentation sowie kontrastierenden Melodien und Themen kehrt der Schluss zu den einleitenden Takten zurück.Eine runde Sache!Une courte introduction précède l’entrée du thème principal. Celui-ci est un air que l’on peut siffler facilement (whistle signifiant siffler“ ou sifflement“ en anglais, tandis que pennywhistle est un fl teau).La mélodie suivante est exécutée par le registre grave de l’orchestre, puis le thème principal revient dans diverses instrumentations. Dans le trio, nous entendons un thème lyrique qui précède un tutti. La marche s’achève avec une coda qui rappelle allègrement les premières mesures de la pièce.Una breve introduzione precede il tema principale, un’aria che si può fischiare facilmente (whistle significa appunto fischiare, mentre il pennywhistle è una specie di flauto). La melodia che segue è affidata al registro grave dell’orchestra che anticipa la riesposizione del tema iniziale in diverse strumentazioni. Nel trio, sentiamo un tema lirico che precede un tutti. La marcia termina con una coda che riprende allegramente le prime misure del brano.

'Gaudete' comes from the Finnish/Swedish 'Piae Cantiones', a collection of religious music from the 16th century. The English folk group 'Steeleye Span' featuring female lead singer Maddy Prior had a hit with this song in the seventies. Peter Martin made a scintillating arrangement for wind-band. By the use of fourths and thirds in the melody the composer harks back to the period from which the song originated (The Middle Ages) 'Gaudete' is afkomstig uit het Fins/Zweedse 'Piae Cantiones', een verzameling van religieuze muziek uit de 16e eeuw. De Engelse folk groep 'Steeleye Span' had in de zeventiger jaren een hit met dit lied. Peter Martin maakte eensprankelend arrangement voor blaasorkest.
