Dance of the Whale was commissioned by the Spanish music foundation, Musica et Orbi, at the instigation of its president, Frank De Vuyst. It is part of a unique project which involved nine composers each writing a short movement, describing ananimal of the composers’ choice, to form a suite called Bestiarium. A consortium of bands around the world helped to fund the project and the world premiere of the suite took place in March 2013 in Medell n, Colombia. Dances & Sonnets is a piece by Jacob de Haan, inspired by the dance and poetry of the 19th Century Europe. Lively instrumental dances alternate with spoken sonnets that are recited by one or more readers, accompanied by quiet, solemn music to provide contrast. In 1878, on a commission from his publisher, Anton n Dvorák wrote a series of eight Slavonic dances. Modelled on Johannes Brahmsâ?? famous Hungarian Dances, although in contrast to Brahmsâ?? work, Dvorák used no original melodies. Wil van der Beek has arranged No. 7, a brisk 2/4 dance, as well as No. 8, a passionate, exuberant furiant in 3/4. In 1878 schreef Dvoøák op verzoek van zijn uitgever een serie van acht Slavische dansen. Daarbij zouden de beroemde Hongaarse dansen van Brahms als voorbeeld moeten dienen. Dvoøák had echter zijn eigen opvattingover het kunstzinnigvormgeven van (volks)dansen. Waar Brahms meerdere bestaande melodieën van dansen uitHongarije gebruikte, beperkte Dvoøák zich tot karakteristieke ritmische patronen van dansvormen uit zijn vaderland. Oorspronkelijk zijn de Slavischedansen gecomponeerd voor klavier vierhandig. Vrij spoedig maakte Dvoøák zelf een versie voor orkest, waarmee hij wereldroem vergaarde. Het succes was zo groot (zeker ook in financieel opzicht voor de uitgever!) dat een tweedeserie van acht dansen volgde: opus 72 in het oeuvre van Dvoøák.Kenmerken:Dans nr. 4 (Tempo di menuetto, 3/4 maat)Dit is een feestelijke, vrolijke sousedská (te beschouwen als de Tsjechische variant op het menuet), een driedeligedans waarvan de hoekdelen gracieus zijn en het middendeel voor een levendig contrast zorgt.Dans nr. 7 (Allegro assai, 2/4 maat)Dvoøák lijkt hier ge nspireerd te zijn geweest door een snelle dans genaamd skocná. This splendidly instrumented work successfully combines 20th-century musical language with the antique elements deriving from its theme - for example, in the first movement we immediately find an ancient Greek asymmetrical rhythm. The second movement takes us on an adventurous journey to those astonishing geological wonders, the Meteoras the third movement presents a picture of the Delphic dancers, in its title the fourth movement indicates the form used in it, which preserves the unity between the thousands-of-years-old building and its contrasting environment, echoing to the music of the bouzouki. In the suite the composer expertly exploits the possibilities of instrumentationoffered by the wind orchestra, this extremely effective work can be a rewarding concert piece for any ensemble. Dieses Werk von István Bogár ist eines der ungarischen Stücke für Blasorchester, welches in den letzten Jahrzehnten international einen großen Erfolg erntete. Es entstand im Auftrag des Ungarischen Rundfunks, seine Erstaufführung fand 1982 statt. Das grossartig instrumentierte Werk vereint erfolgreich die musikalische Sprache des 20. Jahrhunderts mit den vom Thema vorgegebenen, antiken Elementen. Ein Beispiel hierzu ist gleich im ersten Satz ‚Thessaloniki' ein altgriechischer, asymmetrischer Rhythmus. Der Komponist nutzt in der Suite die vom Blasorchester vermittelten Instrumentierungsmöglichkeiten meisterhaft aus. The forerunner of the Bottle Dance was written for the Blue Danube Harmonica Band in the early 1960s. Later, at the instigation of the excellent folk dance choreographer Miklós Manninger, an arrangement for wind band was prepared, in order to widen the ensemble s repertoire of German national pieces by the addition of a Hungarian dance. The production scored a resounding success not only with the audience but also with the musicians who performed in it, with the result that before long the composer prepared from the Bottle Dance an independent work for wind ensemble - a showy piece, virtuosic in its effect yet easily playable. The youth orchestra arrangement is a simplified andshortened version of the work for full-scale orchestra. Antal Farkas (1925-1992) komponierte hauptsächlich für Blasorchester und Bläser-Kammerensembles. Der Flaschentanz gehört zu seinen beliebtesten Werken. Der Vorläufer des Stückes entstand in den frühen 1960er Jahren für Akkordeonorchester. Auf Initiative des ausgezeichneten Volkstanzchoreographen Miklós Manninger fand später auch eine Bearbeitung für Blasorchester statt. Nicht nur beim Publikum, auch bei den ausführenden Musikern hatte das Stück durchschlagenden Erfolg, deshalb komponierte Farkas vom Flaschentanz bald darauf ein eigenständiges - eindrucksvolles, virtuos wirkendes - und dennoch leicht spielbares - Werk für Blasorchester. Die Bearbeitung für Jugendorchesterist eine vereinfachte und verkürzte Fassung der Fassung für großes Orchester. Imprégné des caractéristiques des styles de danses populaires hongroises, Bottle Dance est une oeuvre espiègle, remplie d’effets virtuoses. Les exigences techniques restent néanmoins raisonnables. Devant le succès de sa version originale pour Orchestre d’Harmonica, Antal Farkas a décidé de renouveler l’expérience en réalisant cette version pour Orchestre d’Harmonie. La “danza della bottiglia†fu scritta per la Harmonica Band Danubio Blu all’inizio degli anni ’60. Visto il grande successo della danza fu deciso di crearne un arrangiamento per banda. Bottle Dance si presenta al pubblico come un vero show, con effetti virtuosi e spettacolari.

The special landscape in the Valley of Flowers national park in the Himalayas is distinguished by its brilliant colours and the variety of its _x001D_flora and fauna. Marc Cunningham was deeply in_x001D_fluenced by the temple dances of this region. The theme behind these dances, which were originally religious performances and for which the dancers dress in colourful garb, is the tension between good and evil. I minuscoli movimenti degli occhi, le gesta precise della mano e le espressioni del viso rivestono un ruolo importante nell’interpretazione. Himalayan Dances evidenzia diversi aspetti folcloristici di questa affascinante cultura.

Flamenco is a style of music, usually played on the guitar to accompany dancing and singing, that has its home in Andalusia in southern Spain. It has its roots in the years of Moorish rule of the region (711-1492) although the modern flamenco style dates only from the 18th century. La Caracola (which is the Spanish name for the triton sea shell) is an annual festival of flamenco that takes place around the region’s capital, Seville, annually in May. This piece does not contain any traditional flamenco melodies but does capture wonderfully the colour, passion and energy of this seductive music in a ‘must-have’ work for Beginner Bands.Flamenco, een muziekstijl die gewoonlijk op de gitaar wordt gespeeld ter begeleiding van dans en zang, komt uit Andalusië in het zuiden van Spanje. The Cuban composer and pianist Ernesto Lecuona (1896-1963) wrote many works labelled as Afro-Cuban, and sorting them all can be difficult. While some are lost and others are scattered about, the 1930 piano suite titled Danzas Afro-Cubanas, a collection of six of the dances, remains a core group in the style. La Comparsa (Carnival Procession) is the sixth dance in the suite, and it is based on the traditional parade and ceremony that occurs during Carnival season in Cuba. This composition starts with the gradual approach of the procession and carries one through all the excitement until the last faint notes of the departing parade die away in the distance. This version for full orchestra has been arranged by Morton Gould (1913-1996).
