Italian composer Ottorino Respighi wrote several operas, ballet music, chamber music, piano and organ works as well as Cantatas in a stylemuch influenced by the French Impressionists mixed with his uniquepersonal style. The Japanese arranger Yoshihiro Kimura has skilfullyadapted Respighi?s symphonic poem Fontane di Roma for concertbands of an advanced level.

Not much is known about the origin of Huntingtower, except for the fact that this ballad was composed in 1931 by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936), commissioned by Edwin Franko Goldman and the American Bandmaster Association, and was premiered on 17 April 1932 at a concert in memory of John Philip Sousa in Washington D.C. It is not even certain whether Respighi arranged the work himself, or left this to someone else. Huntingtower is the name of a castle in Scotland, where Respighi spent some time. It is possible that this ballad contains his musical impressions of his stay there. The orchestration on this CD, made by Franco Cesarini in 1987, is an adaptation ofthe work to the demands of the contemporary concert band.

Ottorino Respighi was one of the most well known Italian composersfrom the beginning of the twentieth century. His style is influencedby the French impressionists, Rimsky-Korsakov and Richard Strauss, but with his very own touch. Respighi’s fame is mostly based on hisinstrumental works, especially the orchestral triptych of symphonicpoems, which included Feste Romane. This skilful adaptation forconcert band retains all the excitement of the original.

Ceremonial Entry is a non-programmatic introductory work in which the timpani’s set a slow movement supported by a long pedal in the basses. Interrupted by signal like motifs the dynamics gradually increase resulting in a heroic trumpet-call. The motion becomes rounder and is followed by a section which brings to mind the rhythmical cadence of galley slaves rowing. As the opening slow movement returns a climax follows similar to the “Pini di Roma” from the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi. Ceremonial Entry was composed to celebrate the 25th Frysk Fanfare Festival.

Completed in 1924 Respighi's masterwork consists of four contrasting movements. The final movement, The Pines of the Appian Way, depicts the advancement of the Roman Legion as it gradually marches towards the listener. It is one of the most glorious and stunning orchestral crescendos in all of classical music. Perfectly arranged for young band by Michael Story! (2:29).
