English composer Malcolm Arnold wrote this compact sonatina in 1951 and it has since become one of his most popular instrumental works. As always with Arnold, it is impeccably crafted: the first movement, with it's wide leaps, the occasional incursion of a six-eight bar into the prevailing four-four, and the lightest of jazzy touches, lives up to its marking of Allegro con brio; while the second demonstates Arnold's love at this period of a gentle cantabile style where no shadows yet lurk. The finale is a wild dance in three-four time marked Furioso, and it is a distant cousin of the Czech Furiant. With its vigorous rhythms and cascading semiquavers, it has something of the open-air quality of Dvorak at his most buccolic - not a frequent influence on Malcolm Arnold, but a highly appropriate one in this charming (and challenging) little work. This version for clarinet solo with wind band has been arranged by saxophone player Alex Steurs.

This piece was commissioned by Japan Ground Self Defense Force Western Army Band. In the programme note for the premiere the composer wrote: I am always impressed by the expansive earth and sparkling ocean scenery when I come to Kyushu. I have met many local people here and they are all expressive and energetic. I wrote this dramatic piece to convey to the whole of Japan the memory of my experience here, swaying in the west wind. I wrote this, hoping that the Self Defense Force will forge closer ties with the community through this piece. Eastern drama felt in the west wind!Dieses Stück basiert auf dem Motto eines japanischen Musikfestivals der japanischen Streitkrafte: Unsere Leidenschaft soll in unserem Herzen widerhallen. Der Komponist liess sich ausserdem von der eindrucksvollen Küstenlandschaft in Kyushu, wo das Festival stattfand, inspirieren und vom Wunsch, dass die verschiedenen Militarblasorchester der Region engere Bande knüpfen mogen, leiten. The composition was meant to be very virtuoso and was written for the euphonium player Steven Mead, who premiered it and has played it regularly worldwide. The title Sir Eu alludes to the master of the euphonium himself, and also to the concept of Europe. From jazz through romanticism to folkloristic elements - this work offers everything that the musical heart could wish for!Sir Eu is geschreven in opdracht van de deelstaat Opper-Oostenrijk en de brassband SoundINNBrass. De compositie moest heel virtuoos zijn - toegesneden op de talenten van euphoniumspeler Steven Mead, die de premiere voor zijnrekening nam en het werk overal ter wereld heeft gespeeld. De titel verwijst naar deze meester op het euphonium, maar ook naar het Europese beginsel. Dances & Sonnets is a piece by Jacob de Haan, inspired by the dance and poetry of the 19th Century Europe. Lively instrumental dances alternate with spoken sonnets that are recited by one or more readers, accompanied by quiet, solemn music to provide contrast. De Haan has compiled a list of suggested poems to be read, but other poems may be selected that better fit the occasion. Dances & Sonnets is a dramatic and truly special piece! Dances & Sonnets is een ontmoeting tussen dans- en dichtkunst uit de negentiende eeuw. Centraal in dit werk staan de dansen die toen geliefd waren in de vissersdorpen langs de Noordzeekusten en rondom de Zuiderzee. Gedichtenwisselen deze dansen af. Bedoeling is dat een of meerdere lezers de gedichten voorlezen, waarbij het orkest hen begeleidt met zachte, gedragen muziek. Naast de gedichten die de componist voorstelt, kunt u natuurlijk ook zelf gedichtenof sonnetten kiezen. Maar ook zonder sprekers komt dit werk voortreffelijk tot zijn recht.Dances & Sonnets ist ein Werk, in dem sich Tanz und Dichtkunst des 19. Jahrhunderts treffen. Im Mittelpunkt des Werkes stehen Tanze, die damals in den Fischereihafen langs der niederlandischen Nordseekuste und der ehemaligen Zuiderzee popular waren. Saxophone Concertino is one of a series of solo concerti by Japanese composer, Satoshi Yagisawa. In this piece, the solo saxophonist's voice does not separate from the concert band, but rather develops musically and gently in combination with it. This work enables the soloist to showcase his ability with variety and grace. Met Saxophone Concertino voegt Yagisawa weer een compositie toe aan zijn reeks van concerti waartoe ook Trumpet Concerto, Trombone Concerto, Marimba Concerto, Concertino for Solo Percussion and Wind Orchestra als ookClarinet Concerto behoren.
