Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) works, The Year 1812, Solemn Overture, Op. 49 (more commonly known as the 1812 Overture) was written in 1880 to commemorate the 1812 defeat of Napoleon's invading French army by the Russians. Despite the composer's lack of enthusiasm about the project at its inception, claiming that he wrote it without any warm and loving feelings, Tchaikovsky acknowledged later that he did well in its composition, saying I absolutely do not know whether my overture (The Year 1812) is good or bad, but I rather think it is the former (pardon my immodesty). It premiered on August 20, 1882, in Moscow at the Art & Industry Exhibition, Ippolit Altani conducting. Famous for its use of cannons in the Finale, the Finale also calls for the inclusion of a military brass band, which is labelled as open instrumentation in the original. This edition by Martin Schmeling spells out specific instrumentation options for the banda. Pjotr Iljitsj Tchaikovsky is famous for his fantastic moving melodies. Different to many of his other romantic Russian contemporaries, Tchaikovsky had a particular feel for the European music taste of music, which made him immensely popular. In this accessible compilation, arranger Wil van der Beek uses a selection of Tchaikovsky’s most beautiful melodies from works including Capriccio Italien, String Quartet No. 1 and his famous Piano Concerto No.1.

Tchaikovsky is best known for his purely instrumental compositions. However, we must not underestimate him as a composer of operas. Many of his operas such as ¬Pique Dame and Eugene Onegin are still performed regularly throughout the world. Eugene Onegin (also called Jevgeny Onegin), composed in 1877-1878, was not called an opera by Tchaikovsky himself, but “lyric scenes”. The work is entirely dominated by lyricism. However, there are two moments that contrast sharply with this lyricism: two ball scenes, for which Tchaikovsky wrote a waltz and a polonaise.After opening with a less well-known allegro dansant, this arrangement features the aforementioned waltz, which can beconsidered a beautiful Russian equivalent of the Faust Waltz by Charles Gounod. In the opera, this waltz is actually played by a military band. The arrangement concludes with the pompous polonaise (also mentioned above) which opens the last act: the ideal music to characterize high aristocracy in the salon of a palace in St. Petersburg.

Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed Capriccio Italien, Op. 45, in 1880 following a trip to Rome with his brother, Modest. Originally titled Italian Fantasia, the work incorporates the music he heard from his room and on the streets during Carnivale in a single fantasy, using the orchestra to create a uniquely Tchaikovsky sound portrait. It was first performed on December 18, 1880, by the Russian Musical Society Orchestra, Nikolay Rubinstein conducting, and it has been a mainstay in concert halls since.
