From bandmaster to composer, Edwin Franko Goldman has become the proverbial household word, and the impact of his life's work on generations of band musicians has indeed been monumental. Calvin Custer has reworked Goldman's best-known march, keeping the original spirit and brilliance intact, but bringing the technical demands within the appropriate educational guidelines. A work by which others can be measured. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

The classic holiday favorite by Al Stillman and Robert Allen is presented here in a playable arrangement for concert band. It is my hope that this arrangement will be equally satisfying for the young band with ample rehearsal time or for the more mature band that wants a holiday favorite they can perform with limited rehearsal. The piece is presented first in a lush chorale format with the use of extended jazz harmonies. Special care should be given to balancing and tuning the inner voices for the most pleasant sound. After the lush opening on the famous refrain the arrangement moves to the bridge in an up-tempo swing. In this section the percussion is written to imitate a drum set, but if a set is available it may be preferable to use it in order to get the right feel. Following the bridge is another statement of the refrain followed by a hymn-style section by the reeds with jazz interjections by the brass straight out of the famous Perry Como rendition. This is followed by a D.S. to the bridge, one more refrain and then a short coda It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this arrangement. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program. -LARRY CLARK New York, NY 2003.The classic holiday favorite by Al Stillman and Robert Allen is presented here in a playable arrangement for concert band. Frank Bridge was one of the finest English composers of the first half of the 20th century. The Pageant of London is his only work for wind band, comprising of two marches, one scored from Bridge's best known organ piece and including the chimes of Big Ben, plus three short renaissance pastiche items, one arranged from Playford (later used by Peter Warlock in Capriol Suite). The music is tuneful, approachable, and, in the words of wind band legend Timothy Reynish makes a fine alternative to Holst's two suites, which were composed around the same time. Reynish has introduced this work to concert bands right across the world. It has been performed in USA and the Far East, recorded by the celebrated Kosei Wind Orchestra of Japan and also by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in the Chandos edition of Bridge Orchestral Music.

In Scotland, the monster of Loch Ness is a hot issue, but the American state of Montana enjoys a comparable phenomenon going by the name of Montana Nessie. In the western part of this remote state lies Flathead Lake: a lake of 45 kilometres /38miles in lenght and 24 kilometres /15 miles breath. At several places, its depth exeeds 100 metres.Nessies discovery takes us back to the year 1889, when captain James Kerr aboard the passengership U.S.Grant was startled by a ship unknown to himsuddenly approaching his vessel across Flathead Lake. However, it turned out not to be a ship but an undefinable animal of immense size. From that moment onwards, life would never be the same again in and around Flathead Lake. The composer wasinspired by the story, and summarized the events into a symphonic poem, but from a surprising angle:that of the monster. The exiting opening allows us to follow the monster in its natural surroundings. The fast follow-up movement depictsMontana Nessie trotting and frolicking about the Montana woods and prairies. From its abode, it thorougly enjoys everything around it. This period abruptly ends in a short climax (Chimes). The solo for cor anglais marks a new period in themonsters life. The presence of people has a paralizing effect and the apprehensive atmosphere of the slow movement may be felt profoundly. The monster observes and mildly teases the ship. Abhor sounds force the ship to a withdrawal. The movingmusical continuation depicts the triumphant monster dancing an ironic waltz. The monsters fear and anger at the intrusion of his freedom run through the piece like continuous threads, and develop into the works final theme.

Chase the Horizon is a musical journey depicting a lonesome cowboy riding on his horse, chasing the horizon. Composer John Pasternak has delivered a strong and musically rewarding piece for the young band. It begins with a nice legato section before setting off on the journey with a tuneful theme. The piece develops through several contrasting sections finishing in a dramatic conclusion. This piece is a story of new beginnings. While writing this piece I pictured a lonely cowboy riding on his horse, chasing the horizon. The beginning for this piece should have a very legato feel except for the Xylophone part, which should use a very abrupt, staccato articulation. Measure 9 should take on a staccato and light feel. The feeling should remain light except for the instruments with the melody, who should play their parts with a more legato feel. Dynamics throughout this first section are crucial. All parts at m. 22 should play with a legato style with focus on the dynamics. The trumpet interjection at m. 25 should be played very light. At m. 32 there should be contrast with all the different styles of articulation. Measure 42 should not slow down too quickly as the group should not ever get slower than the tempo marking at m. 49.The slow section at m. 49 should be played soft with a legato style growing gradually through m. 61. The articulation at m. 61 should be short and staccato, and be careful not to rush. The sections with the melody here should contrast the staccato of the ensemble with a legato style. When the ensemble arrives at m. 78 the piece should have a maestoso-style feel. The rit. at m. 88 should not become slower than the tempo at m. 92. At m. 92, let the horns and saxophones really shine through.

Journey of the Magi is a fantastical piece based on the well-known Christmas carol We Three Kings of Orient Are. After an introduction reflecting the nobility and Eastern origins of the travelers, there are three contrasting settings of the carol's verse and two of the chorus. The royal caravan then fades in to the distance as the three Kings continue their journey and search.

The Long Ships: A Viking Saga portrays the drama and excitement of the adventures of Viking heroes and great tales of Norse mythology. Composer Gene Milford has written a descriptive work that is bold, exciting, and beautiful. It is a rhapsodic piece with great potential for developing the musicianship of your students. The Long Ships is a perfect addition to your ensemble's contest and festival repertoire. The Vikings or Norsemen were the great explorers, warriors and traders of the European Medieval Age. In their iconic “long ships†they traveled from their Scandinavian home lands as far west as Greenland and New Foundland, south into the Mediterranean and East through Russia to the Black Sea. The Vikings were also the scourge of the era, and the cry “the Long Ships are coming†sent fear through coastal and river communities throughout Great Britain and Europe. The Norse sagas, tales of gods and heroes, have inspired musicians and authors though the centuries. The Long Ships: A Viking Saga portrays the drama and excitement of the adventures of Viking heroes and great tales of Norse mythology. The anvil in Percussion 2 should be struck with a large metal hammer. A low sounding anvil is preferred but a break drum can be substituted.

The Gauntlet is a piece written to sound bold and exciting while also being accessible to young performers with a limited range. Simple yet bold rhythms add excitement, heightened by the fact that every section has an opportunity to play melodic content. The interesting “development†section provides a contrast to the opening and helps to build the suspense before the return of the main theme. The percussion helps to drive the energy of the piece by providing a variety of colorful sounds including a gong solo at the end to signal the knight’s triumph.A knight gallops over the rise of the hill into battle, determination shining in his eyes. He must charge through the treacherous lines and survive in order to preserve his kingdom and his honor. The pounding of the battle drums echoes the desperate pounding of his heart. Swords clash and the hooves of the horses strike the muddy ground. He must run this torturous gauntlet. Will he succeed before it is too late? The Gauntlet is a piece written to sound bold and exciting while also being easy for young players to perform due to the piece’s limited range (comprised of the first seven notes in most method books). Carter Pann’s Richard and Renée was written as a gift for two musician friends of his, Renée Kershaw and Dick Floyd. The first movement, “Renée’s Reply,†is a musical portrait of the time the composer spent with his friend in Italy. According to Pann, “the music strives for a poignancy inspired by this new event in their relationship accompanied by a backdrop so beautiful it defies words. A writer/composer (anyone, for that matter) cannot live on the Amalfi Coast and remain unchanged, unmarked.†The second movement, “Floyd’s Fantastic Five-Alarm Foxy Frolic,†is in a playful ragtime style, with an ending that the composer describes as “over the top.†Duration: 13’.

Resignation was composed in memory of one of Ed Kiefer's best friends. Evoking the struggle of coming to grips with the loss of a dear friend, the piece is based on the hymn, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. It is dramatic, heartfelt, and overwhelmingly beautiful. Neither could I write a piece that could come close to reflecting his kind spirit, wit, personality or talent. In fact, it was almost impossible for me to write anything at all. My own grief and the stages of my grief kept getting in the way. I ended up with a setting of the hymn-tune, Resignation. Resigned. To the fact that he is no longer with us. I know he is in a better place, but we are not. We miss him very much. And so, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need seems to speak to those of us he left behind. I apologize if this piece does not reflect your special feelings for him or help you celebrate his moving on. Unfortunately, I could only put down what I have come to accept and hope in some way it may speak to any of you that knew him or to others of you who have also lost a close friend. My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. That is my hope and my hope for you.Although technically very easy, this composition requires a maturity of musicianship to be performed properly. The Bb contrabass clarinet part is integral to the composition, but there are cues in the tuba part if you need them.  Make sure you bring horns to the fore at m. 53 and the low brass at m. 59 so the melody can be heard without effort. Exaggerate dynamics to bring more emotion to the piece. Be careful not to diminuendo too soon near the end or it will be difficult to diminish even further at the very end, where the lone clarinetist holds over a couple of measures, fading into nothing. I hope your students will enjoy this piece and take from it a greater appreciation for the way making music can express feelings.
