Zion is the third and final installment of a series of works for Wind Ensemble inspired by national parks in the western United States, collectively called Three Places in the West. As in the other two works (The Yellowstone Fires and Arches), it is my intention to convey more an impression of the feelings I've had in Zion National Park in Utah than an attempt at pictorial description. Zion is a place with unrivalled natural grandeur, being a sort of huge box canyon in which the traveler is constantly overwhelmed by towering rock walls on every side of him -- but it is also a place with a human history, having been inhabited by several tribes of native Americans before the arrival of the Mormon settlers in the mid-19th century. By the time the Mormons reached Utah, they had been driven all the way from New York State through Ohio and, with tragic losses, through Missouri. They saw Utah in general as a place nobody wanted, but they were nonetheless determined to keep it to themselves. Although Zion Canyon was never a Mormon Stronghold, the people who reached it and claimed it (and gave it its present name) had been through extreme trials. It is the religious fervor of these persecuted people that I was able to draw upon in creating Zion as a piece of music. There are two quoted hymns in the work: Zion's Walls (which Aaron Copland adapted to his own purposes in both is Old American Songs and the opera The Tender Land) and Zion's Security, which I found in the same volume in which Copland found Zion's Walls -- that inexhaustible storehouse of 19th-century hymnody called The Sacred Harp. My work opens with a three-verse setting of Zion's Security, a stern tune in F-sharp minor which is full of resolve. (The words of this hymn are resolute and strong, rallying the faithful to be firm, and describing the city of our God they hope to establish). This melody alternates with a fanfare tune, whose origins will be revealed in later music, until the second half of the piece begins: a driving rhythmic ostinato based on a 3/4-4/4 alternating meter scheme. This pauses at its height to restate Zion's Security one more time, in a rather obscure setting surrounded by freely shifting patterns in the flutes, clarinets, and percussion -- until the sun warms the ground sufficiently for the second hymn to appear. Zion's Walls is set in 7/8, unlike Copland's 9/8-6/8 meters (the original is quite strange, and doesn't really fit any constant meter), and is introduced by a warm horn solo. The two hymns vie for attention from here to the end of the piece, with the glowingly optimistic Zion's Walls finally achieving prominence. The work ends with a sense of triumph and unbreakable spirit. Zion was commissioned in 1994 by the wind ensembles of the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Oklahoma. It is dedicated to the memory of Aaron Copland.

Neither could I write a piece that could come close to reflecting his kind spirit, wit, personality or talent. In fact, it was almost impossible for me to write anything at all. My own grief and the stages of my grief kept getting in the way. I ended up with a setting of the hymn-tune, Resignation. Resigned.  To the fact that he is no longer with us. I know he is in a better place, but we are not. We miss him very much. And so, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need seems to speak to those of us he left behind. I apologize if this piece does not reflect your special feelings for him or help you celebrate his moving on. Unfortunately, I could only put down what I have come to accept and hope in some way it may speak to any of you that knew him or to others of you who have also lost a close friend. My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. That is my hope and my hope for you.Although technically very easy, this composition requires a maturity of musicianship to be performed properly. The Bb contrabass clarinet part is integral to the composition, but there are cues in the tuba part if you need them.  Make sure you bring horns to the fore at m. 53 and the low brass at m. 59 so the melody can be heard without effort. Exaggerate dynamics to bring more emotion to the piece. Be careful not to diminuendo too soon near the end or it will be difficult to diminish even further at the very end, where the lone clarinetist holds over a couple of measures, fading into nothing. I hope your students will enjoy this piece and take from it a greater appreciation for the way making music can express feelings.

Tartan Tapestries is an original piece that sets out to emulate Scottish folk music. Composer Larry Clark has created a concert overture in triple meter to capture the essence of music from Scotland. After a lilting first section,  lush and beautiful moments weave a tapestry of sounds with the lyrical, middle section of the piece. There is an optional part for bagpipes, and an optional ending should you chose to use this instrument as part of the piece. Tartan Tapestries was commissioned by Friends of the Arts for the Saint Andrew's School Band in Boca Raton, Florida. The band program at Saint Andrew’s School is under the direction of Andrea Wolgin. The premiere took place on November 29, 2017.When I was asked by their conductor Ms. Wolgin to write a piece for the Saint Andrew’s School, I asked her what kind of involvement she wanted the students to have in the process. We discussed several options for having the students involved in the process of creating with the type of piece they wanted.  We set up a “Skype” meeting with members of the band to discuss the piece. During this discussion, the consensus of the students was that they wanted a piece depicting the Scottish influence to the school. They also wanted a piece that would challenge all sections of the band and to include bagpipes if possible. I asked that the students be involved in helping to name the piece once it was completed, for which they agreed and were very helpful. Armed with this information, I set out to compose a piece for them, and Tartan Tapestries is the result.The piece begins with a fanfare gesture based upon rhythms and harmonies that appear throughout the piece. I chose the lilting triple feel to the piece, to bring about the Scottish flavor. I wanted the fanfare to be bardic sounding, to depict the strength of the Scottish people and for the piece to have a dynamic opening. The fanfare contains material that alludes to the main theme and with a bit of dissonance and tension that is resolved in the main body of the piece.The main theme is a lilting original melody, but one that I hope with have the essence of Scottish folk songs. The main idea is followed by a more modal and dark sounding secondary theme, first stated in the horns. This material is later used in the development section of the piece. The main theme returns several times, with different and varied orchestrations and harmonic treatments. This is followed by a short transition leading to the more lyrical and slower second section of the piece. A transparent presentation of the lyrical theme, which is based on aspects of the main theme, is presented first by a solo flute. This section is a nod to famous composer Malcom Arnold’s wonderful works for orchestra in its style and orchestration. After a transition or bridge section with a solo euphonium, the piece builds to a dramatic climax of the lyrical theme by the full band. This subsides to a return of the solo flute to end this second section of the piece, followed by a transition back the main theme.The solo bagpipes play a central role in the return of the main theme and take center stage after being heard in the distance earlier in the work. The piece brings back a shortened version of the darker secondary theme, followed by a hint of the fanfare material that builds to one last statement of the main theme by the full band, before leading to a dramatic coda to complete the work.It has been my pleasure to have been given the opportunity to compose this piece for the Saint Andrew’s School Band! Versailles de Christian Bouthier est une suite en quatre tableaux inspirés du célèbre Ch teau de Versailles près de Paris.1. Le Ch teau Dès 1623, Louis XIII, le père de Louis XIV (dit le Roi-Soleil), construit Versailles un premier ch teau majestueux. Plus tard, l’architecte Philibert Le Roy s’est vu confier la t che de l’agrandir. Et durant des siècles, divers autres architectes se consacrent l’agrandissement et l’embellissement de ce superbe palais pour en faire cet ensemble de façades et de b timents majestueux, célèbre dans le monde entier.2. Le grand Trianon Trianon est le nom d'un village acheté par Louis XIV dans le but de construire sur ces nouvelles terres unautre palais. Cherchant se défaire du protocole trop pesant de Versailles, le Roi est Trianon plus proche des siens. Trianon demeurera un lieu de détente, loin de l'étiquette et des fatigues du pouvoir. Les travaux du premier Trianon débutent en 1670. De nombreux b timents et péristyles seront rajoutés au fil des années.3. L'Appartement du Roi En 1683, Louis XIV quitte son Grand Appartement pour vivre dans son appartement intérieur qu'on appelle l'Appartement du Roi. Depuis 1701, la suite des pièces est la suivante : salle des Gardes, antichambre du Grand Couvert, antichambre de l'Œil-de-bœuf, chambre du Roi, cabinet du Conseil. L'apparat des plafonds peints qui caractérisait le décor du Grand Appartement, fait place un décor sobre où les plafonds sont laissés nus. Cet allégement correspond un nouveau go t du Roi-Soleil.4. Les Grandes EauxTrouver les ressources en eaux pour les fontaines de Versailles fut la préoccupation constante du Roi-Soleil. Même en pleine guerre, il s'en inquiétait. Ce sera l’extraordinaire Machine de Marly qui apportera les eaux de la Seine Versailles. L’arrivée des eaux au Ch teau aura nécessité la construction d’un réseau hydraulique de rigoles, de fossés et d'aqueducs s’étendant sur près de deux cent kilomètres. L'ensemble demeure unique notamment par son état de conservation.

What a surprise! An absolutely delightful original composition for mid-level bands which features a bright tempo, mixed meters, independent playing in the parts and an eclectic style that jumps around all over the place! Everyone in the band has interesting parts to play and there are ample percussion parts to keep all your drummers interested. Will challenge groups at this level but it’s well worth the effort and your students will love it! It’s unique and it’s cool! Very highly recommended!

Asteroids and comets have played an important role throughout the history of life on earth. It is quite probable that the dinosaurs have been exterminated by an asteroid's impact in the Gulf of Mexico. Huge tidal waves and fire storms wiped out all life. This is the year 2067 according to the Christian calendar. A collision has just taken place in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and caused an asteroid to enter the earth's power of gravitation. It is instoppably approaching the blue planet. As its peoples have been fighting each other continuously, they missed the building of a global defence system against dangers coming from space. A scanner records the asteroid andimmediately sends a message to the President of the Anglo-American Union. The probability that the asteroid will hit the earth is judged 50% by the experts. Plans are made to shoot the celestial body with rockets live with hydrogen bombs or laser guns in order to throw it off its track, but they fail. The asteroid's size seems to threaten the existence of mankind. Those in the know stare at the night sky in bewilderment. But for the time being, there is still peace on earth....

Rosa Gallica has been written to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. The work focuses largely on France as a lot of the fighting took place there. With the title Rosa Gallica (French rose), the composer wishes to emphasize the poetic image of the rose. The stem represents the years gone by such as those taken up by the First World War - and the thorns refer to the conflict and the pain that the victims had to endure. The rose itself forms the picture of beauty and symbolises opening up to a peaceful world. The piece depicts France from the end of the 19th century through to its role at the heart of the First World War and beyond. A spectacular anddramatic new work by Jacob de Haan.

Rosa Gallica is geschreven ter gelegenheid van de honderdjarige herdenking van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Het werk gaat met name over Frankrijk, waar een groot deel van de strijd zich afspeelde. Met de titel Rosa Gallica (Franse roos) wilde de componist de poëtische symboliek van de roos benadrukken. De stengel staat voor het verstrijken van de jaren, een dramatische periode die de Eerste Wereldoorlog besloeg. De doornen verwijzen naar de oorlogen, conflicten en de pijn van slachtoffers. De bloem van de roos vormt het beeld van schoonheid en symboliseert het openstaan voor een vreedzame wereld. De compositie presenteert het Frankrijk van eind 19e eeuw, geeftdaarna een belangrijke rol in het hart van de Eerste Wereldoorlog weer tot de jaren nadien.
