Brendan Graham's tender song tells the emotional story of Ireland's Annie Moore, the first person to step ashore when Ellis Island opened as an immigration center in 1892. With emotions ranging from hope to fear, joy to despair, this deeply moving ballad has been recorded notably by Sean & Dolores Keane, The Irish Tenors, Celtic Thunder, and Celtic Woman. Here is a beautiful setting adapted for the concert stage. Dur: 3:40.

2011 was a disastrous year for Japan: on March 11 the northeast of the country suffered a violent earthquake, which triggered a huge tsunami and caused massive damage to people and the environment. The ensuing problems with the nuclear reactor at Fukushima only increased the misery: a black day in the country’s history…One almost inevitable consequence of such dramatic circumstances is the particular damage suffered by the cultural arts. And so it was in Japan: various high school wind orchestras in the effected areas lost their practice rooms and/or instruments. It will take a long time before the damage suffered is repaired—and it will take great effort to overcome thepsychological effects, too. Focusing on the latter, Yutada Nishida (director of The Bandwagon radio program) asked a few composers for a simple work that could be played by many orchestras. It just so happened that the Osakan Philharmonic Winds (with whom Jan Van der Roost had conducted a concert exclusively of his own works on September 25th) had had a similar idea. This concert saw the baptism of Song of Hope. This piece immediately struck a chord with musicians and audience alike: it begins bleakly in the low register and evolves to a more open, optimistic close. There really is hope for better times!

Hope helps each of us face life's challenges with courage and optimism. Gift of Hope by Scott Watson captures musically both of these aspects of hope. Opening dramatically, the piece soon settles into an upbeat, joyful main theme. Slower contrasting material follows, building from a tender, transparently scored opening to a climax full of resolve. The optimistic main theme returns, leading to a dramatic, heroic conclusion. (5:45).

Sea of Hope is an optimistic work about new land arisen from the former Zuiderzee (the Netherlands). In the introduction, the sea is conveyed in all its glory and ferocity, through a melody that keeps you wondering whether it makes you happy or sad. Then, finally, there is a glimmer of hope, when the water is dammed up and the land partly reclaimed (by conversion into polder land). The town of Dronten, for instance, develops into a place where one day two people meet up and fall in love. This love is reflected in the slow, passionate middle movement. New life in the town is celebrated joyfully: the zest for life clearly shines through this part of the work, followed byoptimism and celebration in the closing bars.

A Song of Hope is a brief musical expression of sorrow for young musicians to perform in memory of the students at Sandy Hook Elementary School and all victims of senseless violence. Bells and chimes punctuate the plaintive opening statement of the clarinets. Frequent meter changes of 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 are used as are frequent changes of key (Eb, F, C, Bb). Jack Stamp deftly arranges the modulations so that unfamiliar tonalities are easily handled by young ensembles. A Song of Hope is playable with a limited woodwind section of just 2 Flutes, 2 Clarinets, and Alto Saxophone.

This beautiful, yet simplistic ballad, sends the much-needed message of lasting hope for one and all. It also serves as the perfect opportunity to teach expressive playing while the emotional melodic lines are accompanied by rich and lush harmonies. The key change in the closing moments of the work adds that last special touch of musical magic. A great change of pace!

Inspired by the poet, Joseph Addison, who's words tell us that the Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for, the latter oft times being the most difficult to bring to fruition. Establishing four-bar phrasing and developing sensitivity to balance, this work makes an excellent introduction to ballad-style playing for developing bands. (2:45).
