This concertino was written to a commission by Japanese percussionist Kazuko Ogawa as an addition to Satoshi Yagisawa’s concerto series (trumpet, trombone, marimba, saxophone, and clarinet with wind orchestra). The world premiere was performed by Kasukabe Kyoei Junior and Senior High School Wind Orchestra with guest percussionist Kazuko Ogawa, conducted by Jotaro Tsuga, director of the orchestra in 2009. The effective usage of the solo percussion and elegant orchestration has been greatly appreciated since the premiere. Satoshi Yagisawa’s style has been dramatic but in this piece a new XXXX of writing can be found. Grade 5 for the soloist.

Mark Twain's colorful characters come to musical life in A Tom Sawyer Portrait! The journey begins in St. Petersburg, Missouri, with a jaunty musical portrayal of Tom and Huck and a ragtime sequence which depicts the sleepy river town. An Americana-style ballad follows that is tender, lyrical and poignant. This segues into a no holds barred blues section representing the mighty Mississippi. The Portrait concludes with our heroes' return, featuring a recap of the opening theme augmented in the brass and accompanied by woodwind runs and exciting percussion. This is a great selection for the concert band that demands solid musicianship but will reward students for their efforts!

Ye Olde English Hunt comes to life through this colorful and humorous musical portrait. The opening pastoral scene is augmented with bird whistles, duck calls, and whatever wildlife your percussion section can conjure up. A series of trumpet calls, followed by a chorus of A Hunting We Will Go leads us into the frenzy of the hunt, complete with barking dogs and the galloping of horse hooves. Great fun for the band and especially your audience, this is a lighter, tongue in cheek selection for all.
