The Carl Fischer heritage of publishing fine band music has been a fact of music publishing almost since the firm's founding in 1872. With a huge and expanding repertoire to draw on, it is a logical step for Fischer to issue a series of compact discs of band music for sale. With this release, the Carl Fischer Media Group begins what we intend to be the annual release of a recording devoted to classic band music. Bleecker Street Records is the name of the label developed for this purpose and A Perfect Union is our first commercial CD. It contains first-rate performances of classic original works for upper grade band such as Canzona by Peter Mennin, editions of celebrated transcriptions such as Procession of the Nobles in an edition by Van Ragsdale of the classic Eric Leidzen arrangement of Rimsky Korsakov's original and Robert Foster's edition of Henry Fillmore's celebrated transcription of Von Suppé's Light Cavalry Overture. Also included are terrific pieces by Daron Aric Hagen, Larry Clark, Quincy C. Hilliard and Elliot Del Borgo. The performances by the Washington and show the music and the players to best advantage. This will be a recording to own and treasure. Winds under the inspired direction of Edward Petersen, are invigorating.

The Pursuit of Excellence salutes the 20 years of hard work of the wind band. This concert work ends with a chorale of thefull band, symbolising the fulfilment of a united dream! This composition is based on a passacaglia theme, in which artistic perfection, symphonic drama and oriental melody lines play a role. The passacaglia is originally a dance made up of a series of variations above a bass line constantly present as an ostinato. It is not in this sense that the Symphonic Variations are in the passacaglia form but in the sense of the open form of the variations. Jacob de Haan, himself originally an organist, took his inspiration for this piece from the famous passacaglia for organ in C-minor by J.S. Bach. Following the introduction of the passacaglia theme (in the bass) the entry by the trumpets and trombones forms the majestic start to amusical adventure, in which this theme (often fragmentary) returns in variations. Then there follow two faster movements with dramatic contrasts and virtuose passages. Particularly striking here is the use of two characteristic intervals from the beginning of the theme namely the minor second and the augmented fourth. An apause in the composition comes in the slow bridge where a syncopated bourdon (perfect fifth) is constantly repeated. The tension grows in dynamics and harmony, and the oriental-flavour becomes obvious in the melody. We arrive at a faster movement via an accelerando, in which a perpetuum mobile based on the passacaglia theme is central. Finally the whole flows into a martial theme, in which the ostinato accompaniment n the descant derives from the passacaglia theme.

Eleck, conductor, of the Cortland Enlarged City School District, Cortland, N.Y.  Premiered on June 1, 2017, Alcazar is a dynamic piece with a definite Spanish flair.  Using changing meters and syncopated rhythms in its Allegro introduction, the piece continues this vitality into its main theme alternating between 4/4 and 6/8 time signatures.  This opening theme then moves to a secondary theme largely in 5/4, first presented in the woodwinds, followed by a tutti section finishing with a punctuated conclusion to this Allegro.  The clarinets then take us into a melodic Andante middle section, using quarter-note triplets as its rhythmic motive. As this builds to a climax, we are moved into a return to the 5/4 Allegro heard earlier in the piece. As it seems to come to an end, a sudden use of the alternating 4/4, 6/8 earlier motive returns and takes us through an extended ending with a dynamic conclusion. Alcazar should prove to be a favorite of your student musicians as well as your audiences. This is the perfect vehicle for concert and contest performance.

Zodiac Dances was commissioned by the Izumiotsu City Band, Osaka, Japan to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Sparke had previously written the piece, Prelude to a Celebration for the band, and in composing a new piece for their 50th anniversary wanted to personalise it to reflect the band’s history. He chose to write a set of six dance-miniatures based on the decades following the band’s foundation and the equivalent signs from the Japanese ‘Junishi’. During the piece, all aspects of true musicianship come to the surface. Energetic playing, phrasing, melodic music making, technique and a spectacular finale make this work a perfect test or concertwork! Zodiac Dances werd geschreven in opdracht van de Izumiotsu City Band uit Osaka, Japan, ter gelegenheid van het vijftigjarig bestaan van dit orkest. Nel comporre un nuovo brano per la ricorrenza dell’anniversario ha voluto creare un’opera che si ispirasse alla storia di questa formazione. Ha scelto di scrivere un set di sei danze in miniatura ispirate ai decenni che hanno seguito la fondazione della banda e ai segni equivalenti del “Junishi†giapponese. L’energia dell’esecuzione, il fraseggio, la melodia, gli aspetti tecnici e un finale spettacolare rendono questo brano perfetto per un esame o un concerto!
