Commissioned by the McDaniel College Summer Music Camp in Westminster Maryland Kirkpatricks Muse celebrates 30 years of excellence and is dedicated to camp founder Dr. Linda Kirkpatrick. The piece opens with a plaintive Irish style flute solo then moves seamlessly to the fast-paced section loosely based around the Appalachian fiddle tune ?Glory in the Meeting House? introduced by the bodhran (Irish frame drum). The enchanting town of Killarney in County Kerry Ireland has been an inspiration to many artists saints and scholars over many centuries. It lies in the heart of the beautiful Killarney National Park and near Ireland’s highest mountains. There are many places of interest to be found in Killarney and the surrounding area such as churches and other historical buildings as well as a varied landscape with waterfalls lovely valleys and gorgeous lakes. The town also has many great restaurants nice crafts shops and lively pubs where traditional Irish music is often heard. A visit to Killarney inspired Johan Nijs to describe his impressions in this composition. The typicalsounds of Irish music echo throughout the work.

You'll hear the flavor of traditional Irish sounds along with contemporary concert band scoring in this rich and exciting work from Douglas Akey. The 8th note remains a constant thread as the pieces weaves through rapid timesignature changes lilting melodies and driving rhythmic patterns. The slower middle section features a flowing horn melody and richly scored accompaniment figures. An accelerando and modulation lead to the energetic finalsegment in this dynamic and well-scored composition. (5:20)

Although this haunting tune has the flavor and sentiment of a traditional Irish folk song it was composed in 1995 by multifaceted artist Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin. Her inspiration for the song was the idea that when we are happy or sad the elements and the natural world are aligned with our feelings. From the wistful lyrics of the song; Down by the river there's a tall willow tree who weeps all night for you and me. This evocative setting for band follows this sentiment through peaks and vallys of sound and emotion. Dur: 3:10

Composed in the 1700s this traditional Irish ballad was a lament of homesickness for its author and now a tender and beloved melody appearing on countless recordings. Also known as ?The Wind from the South? or ?An Gaoth Aneas ? this setting forsecond year players provides melody for all sections of the band along with subtle and tasteful harmonic variants.

The haunting melody of this traditional Irish folk song is treated here in a lush and moving setting by Michael Sweeney. Even at this easy level the instrumentation is varied and a wealth of musical elements are provided throughcreative harmonizations and carefully placed key changes. Robert Xavier Rodríguez calls the piece a “toccata moto perpetuo ” themusic gradually builds from its quiet beginning to a brilliant flourish that with sound effects truly befits the title.

Britten wrote Irish Reel in 1936 as the title music for a documentary film entitled Around the Village Green. It is a bravura piece exhibiting all the energy and strong orchestral colours typical of the composer at that time and makes good use of a traditional reel tune with the evocative title The Bottom of the Punch Bowl.Guy Woolfenden's transcription for symphonic wind band skilfully captures all the fun and sparkle of this ebullient score.

This little concerto for clarinet was written for Peter Holligan a friend of its composer and the Fife Youth Concert Band (Scotland). The work was based on traditional Celtic music and consists of three movements. 1. Reel - a fast dance ending in an atmospheric but virtuoso cadenza. 2. Lament - a slow and melancholy song hinting at the sound of bagpipes. 3. A fast and virtuoso dance in 6/8 time with Irish influence. The work is a wonderful audience-pleaser and an absolute 'must' for all clarinet-players. The band too is called upon and by all means does have its part to play in the piece. Drawing on the rich tradition of Irish music as inspiration John Williams uses originalthemes but in an Irish style in creating a sweeping film score that beautifully captures and enhances the moods portrayed in the film. A Suite of British and Irish Folk Songs-Songs from Across the Water was commissioned by Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds - Phil Evans Founder and Director. Phil Evans hails from the UK and served for 25 years in the Band of HM Royal Marines. Now resident in the USA he founded Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds in 2008 giving them the tag line ‘An American Band with a British Accent’ as he wanted to combine the best of both countries’ band traditions. With this in mind composer Philip Sparke decided to create a suite of British folk songs scored with an American influence to fulfil the philosophy of the band’s tag line. The three movements which are played without a break are based onthe following folk songs which come from all corners of the British Isles: 'The Three Ravens & The Cruiskeen Lawn' 'The Lark in the Clear Air' and 'The Piper o’ Dundee & Men of Harlech'.
