Seen by many as a rock song, Beat It was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Guitar Songs Of All Time.” Since its release, the song has been covered and famously reinterpreted by artists such as Fall Out Boy, Fergie and most recently Masamicz Amano, who has made this wonderful arrangement for concert band!

‘The Fellowship’ is a musical homage to friendship and camaraderie, symbolised in two alternating, complementary themes. The themes are based on popular songs from two sister municipalities, one lying in Normandy (France), and the other in Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany). Through the merging of their songs in this composition, their bond of friendship is sealed for eternity.

The Fellowship staat voor vriendschap en kameraadschap. Deze symboliek komt tot uiting in twee thema’s, die elkaar afwisselen en elkaar aanvullen. Het ene thema is gebaseerd op een Frans lied, het andere op een Duits lied. Beide zijn populaire liederen uit twee partnergemeenten, waarvan de ene in Normandië (Frankrijk) ligt, en de andere in Rheinland-Pfalz (Duitsland). Door de samensmelting van hun liederen in deze compositie wordt hun vriendschapsband voor altijd beklonken.

Edward Kennedy ‘Duke’ Ellington’s influence on the swing era as musician, bandleader and composer is unparalleled. His arrangement of his own composition It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) is perhaps the first to carry the word ‘swing’ in the title, thereby coining a musical phrase. Toshio Mashima’s stylish arrangement of this jazz standard for concert band hits the perfect note.

Als geen ander heeft Edward Kennedy ‘Duke’ Ellington als musicus, bandleider en componist grote invloed gehad op het tijdperk van de swing. De titel It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing), die hij zowel componeerde als arrangeerde, is waarschijnlijk de eerste songtitel die het woord ‘swing’ bevat. Bella Italia is a medley of three Neapolitan songs that were made famous and popular by the tenor Mario Lanza. The work opens with the graceful waltz Santa Lucia, which is followed by a Latin-style version of O Sole Mio, a melody that became even more well known when used by Elvis Presley as the basis of the song It’s Now or Never. The cheerful Funiculì, Funicul ends the medley in 6/8 time. This arrangement for concert band by Roland Kernen will appeal to a broad audience and will leave both the band and the audience in a high-spirited mood.
