Everything started when two Frenchmen, Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, after having sold over ten records with their band, the Ritchie Family, decided to try out something new. The basic idea was to form a new group inspired by the American male myths of the seventies: cowboys, Indians, men in leather clothes, soldiers and policemen. This is how the Village People were born.Their secret was their energy, cheerfulness and tongue in cheek humour combined with strong disco beat and an arresting visual presence. Even now a Village People song is guaranteed to fill the dance floor in any club or disco. The Best of Village People is a medley including the following pieces: In theNavy,Y.M.C.A. and Macho Man.

Lorenzo Bocci schuf ein Medley für Blasorchester aus den drei grö�ten Hits von Village People, das seine Wirkung garantiert nicht verfehlen wird.

Worshipped as a deity, “mastermind” of poetry, driving force, or heaven’s messenger, the wind took on the most varied shapes according to the era and people. In Claude Debussy’s time, music listened to the voice of nature, and imagination found its primary rights again. This importance of wind was the inspiration for Maxime Aulio’s work Whispering Wind with its suspended atmospheres, vaporous lines and luminous colours. The wind caresses the canvas. A fascinatingnew work for concert band.

In de tijd van Claude Debussy gaf muziek het geluid van de natuur weer en stond verbeeldingskracht in hoog aanzien. Het is deze Franse sensibiliteit die Maxime Aulio’s werk Whispering Wind kenmerkt, met vluchtigelijnen en heldere kleuren. De wind raakt het doek, suggereert en roept slechts op, maar met een indrukwekkende precisie. Een mooie en bijzondere compositie!

Seit Menschengedenken hat der Wind immer eine wichtige Rolle in allen Zivilisationen gespielt. Vor allem auch zu Lebzeiten von Claude Debussy hörte die Musik auf die Stimme der Natur. Jedes Instrument schien Symbol eines Bildes oder einer Vorstellung zu sein. Genau diese typisch französische Empfindsamkeit zeichnet auch deutlich Maxime Aulios Whispering Wind mit seinen spannungsreichen Stimmungen, nebelhaften Linien und leuchtenden Farben aus. Ein sehr ausdruckvolles Werk!

Les chemins du vent sont ceux qui ne sont pas tracés d’avance ; ils nous racontent mille histoires venues d’ailleurs. Les murmures du vent sont les sentiers diaphanes de l’ me, les couleurs de l’éphémère, la poésie des sons. Avec Claude Debussy, la musique écoutait les voix de la nature et l'imagination retrouvait auprès d'elleses droits primitifs. Chaque instrument semblait fait d’impressions et de suggestions. La partition cessait d'être développement pour devenir enveloppement. C’est cette sensibilité toute française que Debussy contribua façonner, que nous retrouvons dans Whispering Wind (“Les Murmures du Vent”) de Maxime Aulio. The tune Old Hundredth is one of the best-known melodies in all Christian musical traditions and first appeared in the 1551 psalter Pseaumes Octante Trois de David, where it is used as a setting for a version of Psalm 134; it is usually attributed to the French composer Louis Bourgeois (c.1510 - c.1560). The melody was then used in 1561 by the Scots clergyman, William Kethe in Sternhold and Hopkins’ Psalter for his paraphrase of Psalm 100 - All People that on Earth do Dwell<(I>, which is still the most familiar hymn sung to this noble tune. When Tate and Brady’s New Version of the Psalms was published in 1696, the melody became know as the ‘old’ version - henceits current title. This arrangement presents three contrasting verses and is effective as a concert piece as well as an instrumental interlude as part of a church service or wedding.

De melodie van Old Hundredth is een van de bekendste in alle christelijke muziektradities, ze verscheen voor het eerst in Pseaumes Octante Trois de David uit 1551. De muziek wordt meestal toegeschreven aan de Fransecomponist Louis Bourgeois (ca.1510-ca.1560). In 1561werd de melodie gebruikt door de Schotse geestelijke William Kethe voor zijn parafrase van psalm 100. Later werd de melodie in Engeland bekend als de ‘oude’ versie - daar komt ookde huidige titel vandaan. Inspired by the memory of an influential music educator, Carol Brittin Chambers has woven a multitude of grooves, colors, and uplifting themes into To Create a Voice. Chambers has attempted to convey distinct moods and emotions that this educator tried to instill in his students. In honor of this dynamic teacher, you will hear Hot Cross Buns cleverly placed throughout the composition.
To Create a Voice was commissioned by the Valley Concert Band in Stockton, California. The piece premiered in October 2017, in memory and celebration of Chris Anderson, a local musician and educator.When writing this piece, I tried to convey certain moods and emotions throughout: soulful at the beginning with calm woodwind chords and solo trombone; increased energy throughout the various sections of the piece; exploration of different grooves and colors; an uplifting, emotional ending that leaves the listener with a sense of how positive and loving Chris was.This piece is largely inspired by a specific quote from Chris:Most people would consider the sounds students first make on their instruments to be cringe-worthy, but to me that’s music to my ears, because that’s the first time students put a voice to their instrument. Over time those voices become stronger; they become clear, more confident, and get to a point where they use those voices to communicate with each other, and to their audiences.To relate to the first notes on the instrument idea, I used motifs based on the first notes most beginners ever play, do-re-mi, which are introduced at the beginning of the piece with the trombone solo, Chris’ instrument. During the section at m. 15, the brass introduce a chorale that I named Chris’ Theme while the woodwinds keep reminding us of do-re-mi. Later in the piece (mm. 71 and 79), I use these notes again, but in reverse, which becomes a reference to the first song most beginners learn, Hot Cross Buns. This section is also meant to portray Chris’ quirky and joking side. In mm. 75 and 83, Chris’ Theme presents itself again a couple of times in response to Hot Cross Buns.Toward the end, at the uplifting moment (m. 97), do-re-mi is heard again, but this time in harmony with mi-fa-sol. This represents the ultimate satisfaction we all feel as musicians when we have finally progressed enough to play in harmony with others. The half-time feeling in 3 at that moment also has significance, relating (rhythmically) to those important three notes again.I really hope you enjoy performing and listening to this piece as much as I have enjoyed creating it!

The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the ‘Tiroler Landeshymne’ (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its ‘couleur locale’: for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!

Le compositeur belge Jan Van der Roost a composé cette œuvre la demande de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie Municipal de Wilten-Innsbruck en Autriche pour les cérémonies commémoratives du bicentenaire de l’insurrection tyrolienne de 1809. Plusieurs éléments musicaux reflètent cet événement historique travers un climat joliment évolutif. L’orchestre énonce un thème hymnique basé sur des fragments mélodiques de l’hymne officiel du Land du Tyrol (ou Hymne d’Andreas Hofer composé par Leopold Knebelsberger) qui se mélangent et se confondent dans un arrangement en forme de contrepoint. Le dessin belliqueux du second mouvement rappelle la lutte des Tyroliens contre les troupesbavaroises, françaises et italiennes, l’instigation du combattant de la liberté Andreas Hofer (1767-1810). Enfin, on retrouve une mélodie de style choral qui évoque avec ferveur l’imposante beauté des paysages du Tyrol, et transmet la chaleur et le caractère jovial des habitants de cette région montagneuse. Tirol Terra Fortis n’est ni une reconstruction historique en musique (autrement dit, une œuvre programme), ni une œuvre politique. Son contenu repose sur une combinaison d’éléments factuels et culturels qui s’expriment travers une trame artistique très expressive. Le bugle a su conserver la fidélité des Orchestres d’Harmonie autrichiens. Intégré dans la texture orchestrale de cette œuvre de commande la demande expresse de la formation dédicataire, le bugle donne une couleur locale la composition et enrichit la large gamme des couleurs sonores de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie.

Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its ‘couleur locale’: for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!

Le compositeur belge Jan Van der Roost a composé cette œuvre la demande de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie Municipal de Wilten-Innsbruck en Autriche pour les cérémonies commémoratives du bicentenaire de l’insurrection tyrolienne de 1809. Plusieurs éléments musicaux reflètent cet événement historique travers un climat joliment évolutif. L’orchestre énonce un thème hymnique basé sur des fragments mélodiques de l’hymne officiel du Land du Tyrol (ou Hymne d’Andreas Hofer composé par Leopold Knebelsberger) qui se mélangent et se confondent dans un arrangement en forme de contrepoint. Le dessin belliqueux du second mouvement rappelle la lutte des Tyroliens contre les troupesbavaroises, françaises et italiennes, l’instigation du combattant de la liberté Andreas Hofer (1767-1810). Enfin, on retrouve une mélodie de style choral qui évoque avec ferveur l’imposante beauté des paysages du Tyrol, et transmet la chaleur et le caractère jovial des habitants de cette région montagneuse. Tirol Terra Fortis n’est ni une reconstruction historique en musique (autrement dit, une œuvre programme), ni une œuvre politique. Son contenu repose sur une combinaison d’éléments factuels et culturels qui s’expriment travers une trame artistique très expressive. Le bugle a su conserver la fidélité des Orchestres d’Harmonie autrichiens. Intégré dans la texture orchestrale de cette œuvre de commande la demande expresse de la formation dédicataire, le bugle donne une couleur locale la composition et enrichit la large gamme des couleurs sonores de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie.

Everyone remembers the first time that they saw a snake. Though fascinating to some and terrifying to others, few animals are as universally mesmerizing. Composer Tyler Arcari has crafted a very fun piece making use of auxiliary percussion instruments to emulate a snake's hiss or ominous rattle. With very strong and interesting melodic material, and scored to make a developing band sound great, this piece is sure to be a favorite among students.
Everyone remembers the first time that they saw a snake. The majority of people have a base fear of them, while others have a “heebie-jeebies” experience. We all know how the great explorer Dr. Indiana Jones felt about snakes, especially when he famously fell into a snake pit during Raiders of the Lost Ark. However you feel about snakes, a pit of them certainly sounds like an adventure.About the work:Snake Pit uses a lot of auxiliary percussion instruments. Some of these sounds are intended to subtly mimic the sounds that snakes make. The maraca in m. 4, of course, is a rattler’s call! The Chinese cymbal is intended to sound like the “hiss” of a not-so-friendly serpent. The eighth-note pattern at m. 9 is used throughout as a “creepy” effect using dynamic contrast so take care to emphasize this when present.I enjoy the gong as a “color” instrument in the band. I try to balance it with the low brass. Take care that at m. 42 the gong is not “front-and center” but more of a support for the nice accented chords in the low brass. Also, the trumpets can become spaced too much here. The accents are more for emphasis and less space.
