Robert Schumann (1810-1856) wrote his CELLO CONCERTO in A minor, Op. 129, in 1850, within the span of only two weeks. He tried offering the work to two publishers before Breitkopf and Hartel decided to publish it. He stressed the point that it would probably sell because cello concerti were few and far between. Never performed in the composer's lifetime, it received its premiere in Oldenburg on April 23, 1860, with Ludwig Ebert playing the solo part. The unique charm of the concerto lies in its structure and scoring, without movement breaks, and written so that the cello part almost never strays from its middle and upper registers. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Cello. Reprint edition. Solo part edited by Rudolf Metzmacher.

Cellist and composer David Popper published the CELLO CONCERTO No. 5 in C major, Hob. VIIb:5, in 1899 as a completion of stetches supposedly made by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). Due to more recent scholarship, the work is now believed to have been written by Popper himself. A blend of technical exploration and melodic charm, the concerto has become a familiar staple of the cello repertoire. It consists of three movements: 1. Allegro moderato, 2. Andante, and 3. Allegretto vivace. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Cello.

Franz Joseph Haydn's (1732-1809) Concerto for Cello in C, Hob. VIIb: 1 is a rare instance where a masterpiece was lost, in this case for almost 200 years, before being rediscovered. The manuscript was discovered by Oldrich Pulkert at the Czech National Library in Prague among the Radenín Castle collection. Composed between 1761 and 1765 for his longtime friend Joseph Franz Weigl, then the principal cellist in the Esterházy Orchestra. As the refinements of the Classical concerto were yet to be established by Mozart, this concerto reflects the Baroque ritornello form. This edition is completed by Oldrich Pulkert and Karel olc, with the solo cello part being edited by Milo Sádlo, who also gave the 20th century premiere of the work. Instrumentation: 0.2.0.0: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Cello.

Johann Wanhal (Vanhal) was an important classical composer from Bohemian/Czech heritage (1739-1813). His main living was as an organist and choirmaster, however Wanhal's musical output as a composer includes over a dozen concerti, many symphonies, chamber music, operas and much sacred music including 58 masses. Wanhal is rumored to have played chamber music with Mozart, Haydn and Dittersdorf, with Wanhal on the cello. In the 1770's Wanhal met the contrabassist Johannes Matthias Sperger and wrote a double bass concerto for him. The Concerto is in the key of E-Flat (original key of D for the double bass) in three movements and has been expertly arranged for Tuba and classical wind ensemble by Ms. Janet Yarbrough of Duke University. This work will also be available soon with a piano reduction.

Written in the Italian style - with a pinch of Sousa, Marcia a Montecelio was composed on pure inspiration in just two days. This concert march will excite your audience and challenge your ensemble.Monticello is the name of a little place northeast of Rome where my wife and I have rented a simple home for more than 20 years. We participated intensively in the cultural life of the community where there was also a little band, the Banda Municipale Cornicolana, which consisted of about 55 wind players, mostly youngsters. One day, the Il Direttore came to me and asked if I would like to write a march for them, which I naturally did. It became the Marcia a Montecelio. After 14 rehearsals, with everyone tired, perspiring and red in the face, we were forced to give up. The march was too difficult for them. I then wrote another, easier march for them to perform at the forthcoming feast of San Michaeli. The Montecelio march was composed on pure inspiration in just two days. It is written in the Italian style - with a pinch of Sousa.

I wrote Galloping Ghosts (A Ragtime March) to conclude a concert of my chamber music in New York City on October 28, 1986. It is the final part of a work called Rags for Divers Players. This work was written to show the variety possible within the standard rag form. I used all the players available for the finale -- two violins, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, and piano. Since this is a rather unusual instrumental combination and not easy to reassemble, I decided to rescore the work for concert band. Galloping Ghosts is written in a standard march form but incorporates many of the syncopations found in ragtime. The uniquely American music called ragtime traces its history to African rhythms brought over by slaves. Over the years this music became welded to European musical forms such as the quadrille and the march. Drums and banjos and the minstrel tradition lent a special flavor, and from all these elements ragtime slowly evolved within the largely unknown black subculture of the late 19th century. In the late 1890's it emerged as a fully developed form in the classic piano solos of Scott Joplin (1869-1917). Joplin's 1899 hit, Maple Leaf Rag, was an overnight sensation and brought ragtime worldwide fame. Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Piccolo, 8 Flute 1 and 2, 2 Oboe, 1 Eb Clarinet, 4 Bb Clarinet 1, 4 Bb Clarinet 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 3, 2 Eb Alto Clarinet, 3 Bb Bass and Bb Contrabass Clarinet, 2 Bassoon 1 and 2, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 1, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 2, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 1 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Cornet 1, 3 Bb Cornet 2, 3 Bb Cornet 3, 2 Horn 1 and 2 in F, 2 Horn 3 and 4 in F, 4 Trombone 1 and 2, 4 Bass Trombone, 2 Baritone (B.C.), 2 Baritone (T.C.), 4 Tuba, 1 String Bass, 1 Timpani, 1 Xylophone, 3 Percussion 1, 3 Percussion 2.

Anna Amalia of Prussia held various titles during her lifetime, including Princess and Abbess of Quedlinburg. Born in Berlin, she was one of ten surviving children of the royal family of King Frederick William I of Prussia. Princess Anna Amalia studied harpsichord, piano and counterpoint. Princess Anna also founded a music library collection, which included autographed scores of J.S. Bach and other composers. This collection still exists today (Amalien Bibliothek). This two-movement Divertimento in Bb Major has something for everyone. The melodic and secondary parts are passed equally between the instruments. The piano part is quite playable for a high school student. It has the character of a conversation between friends gathering for a friendly afternoon tea. This arrangement is scored for piano quartet, with a substitue clarinet part in place of violin.

Dorian Dialogue is a concert piece for band set in the Dorian mode. Evoking traditional English folk melodies, the first theme is rustic in nature and performed with gusto, while the contrasting second theme flows in a singing style. This piece would be a perfect selection to highlight an ensemble's talent in festival performance and help teach simple sixteenth note figures.
