Contrasts was written for, and dedicated to, trombone soloist Dr. Brett Baker. As the titles indicates, contrasting elements characterize this challenging piece. The slow movement Sounds has a somewhat dark and sombre atmosphere, with complex harmonies and special sound effects. However, the second movement, Caprice, is energetic, entertaining, virtuosic and somewhat whimsical - quite a contrast indeed with the first! Overture to a New Age (“Ouverture d’une nouvelle èreâ€) débute avec une introduction solennelle suivie d’un canevas vif et rythmé. L’intervention de la clarinette solo marque le début d’un passage expressif et riche en contrastes. Un long crescendo précède le retour du motif initial. L’œuvre se termine sur une trame processionnelle dont la ligne mélodique annonce l’ouverture d’une ère nouvelle. Le thème du passage vif est alors réexposé et chemine en superposition celui de la trame processionnelle. La coda grandiose illumine cette brillante ouverture.

Aurora Dances was commissioned by the Hong Kong-based Winter Band Festival, and consists of three movements, to be played without a break. ‘Aurora Borealis’ opens with florid woodwind figures and highlights different sections of the band in turn. The second movement ‘Aurora Australis’ leads to a sombre chorale, which builds to a full-band climax. The finale ‘Aurora Dances’ is characterised by rhythmic, dance-like themes. A central section features a contrasting legato melody, but this doesn’t dispel the energetic feel of the opening, which returns to close the work.Aurora Dances werd geschreven in opdracht van het Winter Band Festival in Hongkong. Het werk bestaat uit drie delen die in elkaar overlopen. ‘Aurora Borealis’ opent met sierlijke motieven in het hout en bevat korte, herhaalde frasen waarin de verschillende secties afwisselend in de schijnwerpers worden gezet. David Fetter's brilliant new work Situation Update - Suite for Tenor Trombone and Concert Band is written in three contrasting movements totalling almost 11 minutes in length: 1. Swift 2. Longing 3. Exit Music Swift is marked Intense and is very rhythmic and angular. Longing is a beautiful lyrical movement marked Cantabile and Exit Music is marked Lively mixing chromatic, lyrical and syncopated segments, ending in a giant climax. Both the solo and accompaniment parts are written for advanced performers. The work's premier was performed in 2015 by retired Principal Trombonist of the Boston Symphony, Ronald Barron and accompanied at the Piano by Pianist Larry Wallach. Just based on its title, this piece has to be celebratory and up-beat, which it is! It opens with a stately fanfare, first played on the low brass before the entire band joins in. This gives way to a contrasting lyrical theme which develops until it joins up with the fanfare to complete the opening section. A lively and heavily syncopated vivo follows, cast as a traditional march, complete with a 'bass strain' and trio.
