Expect the unexpected in this major new work for Saxophone quartet and band by James Curnow. Built on a grand thematic plane, this tour de force employs the full range of expression. Gleaming modernity; dark modality; rhythms ranging from tentative to deliberate; and throughout, a sense of mysterious expectation for what is next to come. Expectations are fulfilled with the Presto finale. Not every band is capable of playing at this level, but if yours is, consider breaking new ground with DIALOGUES.In Dialogues voor saxofoonkwartet, harmonieorkest en slagwerk ontvouwen zich levendige dialogen tussen de solisten, maar ook het harmonieorkest komt in dit expressieve, veeleisende werk ruimschoots aan bod.

Dorian Dialogue is a concert piece for band set in the Dorian mode. Evoking traditional English folk melodies, the first theme is rustic in nature and performed with gusto, while the contrasting second theme flows in a singing style. This piece would be a perfect selection to highlight an ensemble's talent in festival performance and help teach simple sixteenth note figures.

The new millennium inspires curiosity, optimism, and fear of the unknown. Belgian composer Johan Nij composed Millennium Fear to capture the uncertainty of this monumental event. The piece combines dynamic sounds, feverish rhythms, and surprising sound textures in the dialogues between different instrument groups. The piece expresses the thoughts and feelings many have toward the new millennium.

Concerto Cappricioso begins with a short fanfare-like opening. The musical game between the solis and accompaniment will captivate and delight your audience every time. Contemplation is the first movement from the Clarinet Concerto by Jan Van der Roost, which was commissioned by Musica Reservata VOF, Belgium, and is dedicated to the famous clarinet soloist Eddy Vanoosthuyse. A slightly mysterious intro leads to an orchestral climax with ascending melodies and the entrance of the soloist. This occurs at first with fragmentary musical ideas, and then with longer melodic lines. The orchestra delivers the dialogue withthe soloist, and creates a fitting musical frame with a delicate and colourful instrumentation. Towards the end of the music, the atmosphere from the beginning is restored, and the soloist finishes on the same note that he started the piece on. The concerto is also available as a piano reduction. This music was originally written for string orchestra. In this band version, the key has been changed to Bb major from A major. In my opinion, the music sounds gentler in Bb major. I like to see images that reflect on the water. In this piece you will find the same situation between the melodies in the different parts. Please look carefully at each part and try to find the reflections. Enjoy the dialogue of the phrases.  .This music was originally written for string orchestra. While composing Serenata, Jan Van der Roost didn't focus too much on virtuosity, acrobatics or spectacle. Instead, he wanted to let the solo instrument shine as a melodic and expressive voice. And indeed: the warm sound of the euphonium touches the heart of the audience straight away in the first section with a melodious theme. Then follows a rigaudon, a noble and elegant dance from the Renaissance era. Despite the fact that some of the variations on the main theme require some technique and agility, the overall character mostly remains songful. The composition as a whole builds further on these two musical ingredients, but thanks to a clever alternation of melodic and technical passages, it offers a nice stylistic diversity to the listeners. The band is definitely not 'just accompanying' but fully participates and begins a dialogue with the soloist: both musical partners have their say. The end is more spectacular and sonorous, giving an extra boost of energy to the soloist as well as the band in a grand finale!

'One voice listens to another, hears and responds...' So begins the 'Notes to the Conductor' from this musical investigation of communication. The choirs within the ensemble state their comments and then interweave and give response. Sensitive dynamic structuring underlines the programmatic and educational significance of this fascinating work. (3:04).

Carolina’s Majesty captures the grace and beauty and of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Opening with a dialogue between brass section fanfares and lyrical woodwind statements the piece quickly develops into a soaring melody first heard in the woodwinds and then passed through the brass section. The slower middle section weaves the flowing melodic material between all choirs of instruments and a unique fugue inspired by the opening melodies leads us to a majestic and energetic conclusion. With emphasis on melodic development throughout the composition, this powerful composition is an excellent choice for any concert or contest setting.

The Cycle is a sonic interpretation of social anxiety. Chromatic themes are used to create a manic texture while rhythmic intensity and frenetic melodies throughout give this work a tense, anxious feeling. Composer Peter Scianio writes The Cycle was written to offer a sonic interpretation of this disorder with the hope that, through greater understanding, an open dialogue can be made available to youth and adults who deal with this everyday..

Get ready for an abundance of merriment! This work features carols that have been traditionally sung in Canada for many years and will help to create a spirit of mirth in no time. It opens with the joyous strains of Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant (He is Born, The Divine Child) and continues with the plaintive and modal Noël Nouvelet (Sing We Now of Christmas). The Huron Carol ('Twas In the Moon of Wintertime) is then presented with remnants of Noël Nouvelet cleverly woven in. The dramatic conclusion develops brief dialogue between Good King Wenceslas and Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant that brings the work to an exuberant and powerful close. Juxtaposing the lyrical and expressive with the joyous and cheerful in this masterful arrangement will add a little touch of Canada to your next holiday concert. (4:00).
