Concert Band - 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 3 Clarinets in Bb, Bass Clarinet, 2 Bassoons, 2 Alto Saxophones, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, 3 Trumpets in Bb, 4 horns in F, 3 Trombones, Euphonium, Tuba, Timpani, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymbals. A set of variations on an Irish folk tune for full concert band by Ian Vlemmiks. This rousing tune is presented in many guises – folk sounding, rousing, toe tapping sections give way to slower and more reflective/mournful variations . The music then switches from compound time to simple time for a march-like section, before a switch back to compound time for a richly chromatic version. Finally, brass fanfares and woodwind trills lead to a big finish. Great for the concert platform, the simpler phrase structures make this piece fairly straightforward to follow, even if some parts are technically harder (particularly flute 1 and clarinet 1).

The Voice on the Mountain was written for Mike Veak, a band director who dedicated 30 years of his life to teaching instrumental music in Lincoln, Nebraska. Nolan Schmit begins the piece with a flute solo representing a solitary voice on a mountain. The voice begins to build in strength and intensity as it travels down the mountain, is heard by others and is communicated to distant lands. This is a musical metaphor for a teacher - a solitary voice - who impacts generations of students. This is really a tribute to all band directors. A dramatic setting with an explosive ending.

This dashing work in one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's more frequently heard German Dances (K. 605, No. 3), which he specifically titled The Sleigh Ride. The composition was originally written during the last year of Mozart's life in 1791. That year was one of his more productive years, composing other well known masterpieces such as The Magic Flute, Piano Concerto in B-Flat Major, The Concerto for Clarinet, and his very last composition, the Requiem which he finished only twelve of the fifteen sections before his death. German Dance captures the wonderful melodies, lively rhythms, and ingenious colors of Mozart's style. This is a charming arrangement with three separate bell parts bringing forth the festive sound of ringing sleigh bells. Arranged to re-create classical scoring, this joyful programmatic piece will be a favorite with young musicians and audiences alike.

IN OLD MELBOURNE TOWN depicts the vibrant, dynamic energy of the city after which it is named, Melbourne, Australia. An upbeat, syncopated melody featuring the eight note/quarter note/eighth note rhythm characterizes the Allegro section, which opens after a four-bar Maestosos introduction. A slow, lyrical middle section introduced by the flutes contrasts nicely with the strong, upbeat finish.

White Light was commissioned by Fumiko Teramoto, oboist with the Musashino Grand Concert Band in Tokyo, Japan. The request was for a moderately slow piece of intermediate difficulty that included the work “white” (Ms. Teramoto's lucky color) in the title. The composer used this suggestion to write a piece that was both bright and light in terms of harmony, color and orchestration, with much use of simple major and minor chords and an emphasis on the pure, transparent timbres of the upper woodwinds of the band; he was also keen to capture the essence and history of the oboe as a solo instrument. The piece is pastoral in character and often almost baroque in style. It opens with a chorale-like passage on flutes and clarinets; the soloist enters with a recitative over trilling clarinets. The main theme is then introduced, accompanied by the woodwinds. After a short bridge passage, a change of key heralds a second theme by the soloist, with gentle brass punctuations. This builds to a climax, ending on a high trill from the soloist. After short passage over a timpani roll, the band recalls the main theme, taken up once again by the soloist. This leads to a short cadenza before the closing bars bring the work peacefully to a close.

March Ponderoso, composed in 1910, is representative of a King march at a higher level of difficulty. The introduction is an immediate test of the technique of the low brass players. The first strain contains melodic materials in trumpet, clarinet, & flute, scored against wonderful euphonium countermelodies. The trio is an ideal vehicle for showcasing the melodic capabilities of the euphonium and clarinet sections. The break strain, from the standpoint of technique, represents one of great difficulty for all players. A sweeping scale passage in both euphonium and French horns leads the band into the final driving strain. March Ponderoso is dedicated to Mr. Otto Bohlen, Clarinetist, of Canton, Ohio.
