One of the most enduring TV theme songs ever written is this catchy march from the hit series “Hogan's Heroes.” Eric's easy version starts with the trademark drum introduction, then follows with the familiar flute melody and finally the full band. Solid writing for beginning groups.

This work was commissioned by the All Japan Band Association (Chiba Prefecture) to commemorate their 45th anniversary. The composer, Satoshi Yagisawa, was requested to write a march that was easy enough for junior high school students to play, and was based on the folk songs in Chiba Prefecture. After several months of research the composer finally discovered Boushu Oiwake, a lyrical folk song sung with the Japanese bamboo flute and shamisen (three-stringed Japanese instrument). After the composition process has been completed we have here a fantastic triumphant march sure to ?raise the roof? at any performance.

Joyeuse Marche (originally called Marche Francaise) was written in 1888. It exudes Chabrier's rhythmical exuberance, spontaneity and wit, bringing pleasure and joy to performers and listeners alike. Truly a march which lives up to its title. In spite of displaying remarkable musical gifts Chabrier (1841-1894) was sent by his father to study law and in due course, having taken a law degree, went to work in his native French Ministry of the Interior, stay there for eighteen years. During the whole of this time he was developing his real interests in music and painting, including composing operettas and music for the piano. Following a holiday in Spain in 1883, Chabrier wrote a rhapsody for orchestra based on Spanish tunes he had heard. This became Espana; it achieved immediate acclaim and is still his most performed work. Joyeuse Marche (originally called Marche Francaise) was written in 1888. Festival March is presented in a new edition arranged by Richard Summers. It is a tour de force composition for advanced bands and hearkens back to a bygone era during the golden age of the band movement. Directors and students will hear operatic music from composer Victor Herbert who is best known for his Christmas classic, Toyland. This is a richly scored masterpiece that deserves to return to standard status in concert band repertoire. We are proud to bring you this new setting of this cherished classic.Festival March by Victor Herbert was written for the Pittsburgh Symphony and first performed under Herbert’s direction in Chicago on Dec. 9, 1901 celebrating the 12th anniversary of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Also known as the Auditorium Festival March, he included it many times for programs of a festival nature. The main theme Auld Lang Syne, a famous Scottish folk song, is incorporated many times along with brass fanfares, interludes and march melodies. This band arrangement is very similar to the original orchestral composition. The missing string parts, the addition of the saxophone section and other band instruments, editing of the superimposed triplets against sixteenth notes, to one or the other, and articulations suitable for the band, were major challenges. The style of early twentieth-century American music is captured here. This arrangement will give band musicians access to a fine piece of music that could only be appreciated by orchestra musicians up to now. Although suitable for many occasions, this piece is a great way to begin or end a December holiday concert.  Notes to the ConductorVictor Herbert’s music can be interpreted in a romantic style, which is the conductor’s responsibility to read in nuance and musicality. The beginning and other triple-tonguing sections of this piece have a March of the Toys quality to it.  The interludes and Auld Lang Syne sections are legato and musical. The March sections can also be shaped musically.About the ComposerVictor Herbert was born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in Germany. When he moved to America in 1886, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as principal cellist and eventually composed many works including forty-three operettas on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I, including Naughty Marietta and Babes in Toyland. Victor Herbert conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904 and then was the conductor of his own Victor Herbert Orchestra. He formed ASCAP with a group of composers in 1914 and was the director until his death in 1924. Among his thirty-one compositions for orchestra, Festival March was a favorite of his and was eventually published by Carl Fischer Music.  .

This arrangement of the entire March from A Moorside Suite brings this refreshing music to concert bands of all levels. It should be played with full appreciation of its splendid sense of purpose and direction, from the bold fanfare-like opening, based on a pair uplifting leaps of the interval of a fourth, in which every instrument takes part, right through to the exaltant flourish in the final bars marked Allegro vivace. Truly, a March to lift the spirits!Gustav Holst (1874-1934) can claim a distinction shared with a relatively small number of composers in that his music is more performed now than it was during his lifetime. A Moorside Suite, Holst's only work for brass band, is in three movements, Scherzo; Nocturne; March; and was written as the set work for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in 1928. It has become recognized as one of the truly great original works for brass band. This arrangement of the entire March brings this refreshing music to concert bands of all levels. Effectively exploiting the contrast between compound time (6/8) and common time (2/4), this tuneful march from Sousa's operetta of the same name, is perfectly re-cast for young musicians in this expert version by Andrew Balent. It makes a great warm-up march and is a fine introduction to the Sousa style. Duration: 2'25.
