Jovian Farewell is a carefully paced memorial work, with the title referring to the planet Jupiter and the music incorporating the famous chorale by Gustav Holst. The familiar melody is hinted at early, then developed through a series of layers and phases with building intensity. The full chorale emerges near the end, then tapers peacefully to a tender close. Dur: ca. 3:50.

Farewell Song has been taken from Der Trompetervon Säckingen by Victor E. Nessler (1841-1890). Thisopera tells the sentimental story of a plain musicianwho is eventually allowed to marry the daughter ofa baron. From the first performance in 1884, thisopera was well liked - not so much because of thestory but because of its musical features. Impressivetrumpet solos, drinking songs and dance scenes werethe ingredients that enthralled audiences throughoutEurope. Today, only the farewell song called JungWerner’s Abschied, also known as Behüt’ dich Gott, has remained an absolute winner. Wil van der Beekhas written a fine arrangement of this entitledFarewell Song. He felt itwas appropriate to entrustthe melody of this song, originally written for tenorvoice, to the baritone or euphonium.

Farewell was composed at the farewell of Fanfare Trompetterkorps Der Cavalerie in 1993. The work is based on 2 of the most famous tattoo signals in military music: Reveille and Tattoo. Farewell opens festively with blasting trumpets and then continues with a somewhat melancholy melody based on the reveille theme. After interweaving all the signals and themes in the work's climax, the work ends quietly, with in the distance a lone trumpet playing the tattoo signal.... As its title suggests, Farewell at Dawn is a musical expression of bidding farewell to the night and beginning a new day. The piece opens softly with a gentle motive that evolves through simple, yet expressive material. A short quasi-canon provides a transition for a climax that resolves peacefully using the original musical motive. This is a piece with a mature, lyrical sound that can be performed by the youngest of bands. (1:45).

Geoffrey Brand's arrangement of Berlioz's Shepherds' Farewell form L'Enfance du Christ is restrained, delicate, and contemplative. In this arrangement for small wind orchestra, the instruments are called upon to display their softer persuasive sounds in order to retain the sensitive nature of this tender music.L'Enfance du Christ (The Childhood of Christ), written between 1850 and 1854, is the nearest that Berlioz got to writing an oratorio. It is in three parts; he called it a 'sacred trilogy.' Throughout, the music is restrained, delicate, and contemplative. In its original version, The Shepherds' Farewell is scored for chorus accompanied by two oboes, two clarinets, and strings. With these selected colors, Berlioz achieves a masterpiece of delicacy and serenity. In this arrangement for small wind orchestra without chorus, the wind instruments are called upon to display their softer persuasive sounds in order to retain the sensitive nature of this tender music. This arrangement may be used with chorus utilizing the original chorus parts. The key is one half tone lower than the original setting.

This powerful work for band is composed in two main sections. The opening slow section features stunning impact points mixed with moments of majestic lyricism and distinctive harmonies. The energetic Presto section in 3/4 is introduced using a percussion ostinato with heroic and fanfare-like figures layered in from various sections of the band. The lovely old tune on which this composition is based is know by a variety of names: Farewell! But Whenever You Welcome the Hour, To Rodney We Will Go, and Moll Roone. The Andante e rubato used from the outset of the piece, gives conductors as much freedom as they might desire. Wonderful lyrical writing and a beautiful tribute to that special someone.

While some goodbyes are temporary, and others more permanent, this lovely flowing lyrical work for band helps capture the range of those feelings of farewell in music. Haunting and somber melodies give way to an uplifting chorale, and a poignant and slightly unsettled conclusion remind us of how our farewells reach so deeply into the soul. An excellent selection for development of blend, balance, intonation, and musicianship, A Song Of Goodbye will be an outstanding choice for festival and concert performances.

This composition of Marc Cunningham has four parts, and takes place on a sunny day in a picturesque town. 1. Promenade Many people walk through the city. The band passes through the streets. People are strolling along the avenues and amorous couples are sitting on a park bench. 2. Lovey Dovey One of these couples is knee-deep in love. 3. Crispy and Creamy Here the contrasts between a crisp staccato section in two-four time signature and a smooth legato section in three-four time signature are depicted. Is Crispy the boy and Creamy the girl? 4. Farewell In the last particle the couple says goodbye. We still think back tothe walk through the city. It sounds a little less happy now. Not everyone is good at saying goodbye, sometimes a tear flows.
