Everyone remembers the first time that they saw a snake. Though fascinating to some and terrifying to others, few animals are as universally mesmerizing. Composer Tyler Arcari has crafted a very fun piece making use of auxiliary percussion instruments to emulate a snake's hiss or ominous rattle. With very strong and interesting melodic material, and scored to make a developing band sound great, this piece is sure to be a favorite among students.Everyone remembers the first time that they saw a snake. The majority of people have a base fear of them, while others have a “heebie-jeebies†experience. We all know how the great explorer Dr. Indiana Jones felt about snakes, especially when he famously fell into a snake pit during Raiders of the Lost Ark. However you feel about snakes, a pit of them certainly sounds like an adventure.About the work:Snake Pit uses a lot of auxiliary percussion instruments. Some of these sounds are intended to subtly mimic the sounds that snakes make. The maraca in m. 4, of course, is a rattler’s call! The Chinese cymbal is intended to sound like the “hiss†of a not-so-friendly serpent. The eighth-note pattern at m. 9 is used throughout as a “creepy†effect using dynamic contrast so take care to emphasize this when present.I enjoy the gong as a “color†instrument in the band. I try to balance it with the low brass. Take care that at m. 42 the gong is not “front-and center†but more of a support for the nice accented chords in the low brass. Also, the trumpets can become spaced too much here. The accents are more for emphasis and less space.

This piece was commissioned by the 'Concert Band Vlamertinge' and is a plea for peace: the title translates as 'Peace on Earth'. This is expressed by means of the vocal contribution expected from the performers. In various places of the piece you can recognize, the words 'Et In Terra Pax' - an appeal for peace - at first jumbled together but later more rhythmically structured, developing into synchronized massed voices. The work starts with a pentatonic theme based on the notes D, E, G, A and C (taken from 'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtinGE' and the name of the conductor, NiCk VAnDEnDriessChe). A somewhat sad melody is developed during an orchestral climax which leads to the firstexplosion of sound (measure 62 onwards). Suddenly the opening measures are recaptured, albeit with a differently colored sound: the words 'Et In Terra Pax' bring the first movement to a close. A restless Allegro follows which abruptly stops and is replaced by a calming cho-rale-like passage. A narrator reads aloud the poem 'Sonnet' by the young poet Charles Hamilton Sorley, who was killed during World War I. This poem fittingly puts into words the cruelty and senselessness of war. After the expanded recapitulation of the allegro, the broad, almost infinite atmosphere of the beginning returns. Clarinet and English horn play the pentatonic opening theme once more, this time broadly, while the words 'Et In Terra... Pax' are repeated again and again by the rest of the orchestra. The composer has purposely avoided all forms of aggression and bombastic sounds regularly used in works about war. Fear of violence and destruction can be heard and felt during the allegro passages. The charged opening makes way in the end for hope: May peacefulness replace cruelty in everyday life, too.

Since the beginning of mankind people have realized that the warmth and the light of the sun were necessary to develop life on earth - by creating winds in the air, by generating rains through the evaporation of sea water and by allowing plants to grow. The sun creates the dynamism of the chain of life. This is the reason why ancient populations adored the sun as the god of cosmic order as opposed to the god of chaos or night, who generated fear and the necessity of defense. This piece is a tribute to the sun (Verso il Sole) as an existential symbol of life and energy. After percussion simulate the sound of a lift hill, the ride is off in an action-packed series of drops, turns, and loops. Eventually the riders get their hands up in the air and revel in the unabashed joy of the moment before the ride comes to its end. Unique and powerful!

A city is founded—– it has a heart that beats. But visible achievements such as buildings and infrastructure merely bear witness to what its true heart is made of—the people who have lived, and still live, in the city. The pulse of the city, brought to life by itsheartbeat, changes over time. Who hasn't seen those time-lapse images showing twinkling lines of car lights as people make their wayto work, while others stand at traffic lights, only moving as if at the push of a button? These are like life flowing in the veins, driven by a strong heart. Leonardo da Vinci had already imagined the rivers as the blood vessels of the Earth. In any city, though, it's not the rivers but the movement and activities of the people who live there. The heart doesn't always beat steadily, however, but its rhythm can be influenced by joy, fear, and many other things. Every city has its own pulse. This is also true of the university city of Marburg, where people from over 100 nations now live together in a cosmopolitan and tolerant community. This work describes the city from its founding in 1222, and the charity of Saint Elizabeth, all the way to the present day.

An Astrological Composition. Astrology is based on the principle that each sort of time has its own quality. In order to determine the quality of a particular moment, an astrologer looks at the position of the planets in the solar sustemat that moment. Each planet has specific types of energies and its location provides unique information for a certain moment on Earth. Thus: its position in the sky tells something about what happens on Earth. In this composition the typesof energies of four planets are musically translated. The four planet were not randomly chosen. There are two pairs, whose influence and energy are opposite. Venus and Mars. Venus represents the feminine principle: harmony, beauty, art, and the ability to make relationships and to keep the peace. Venus connects, and communicates in order to maintain the balance. Mars represent the masculine principle: winning, impulsiveness, enthusiasm, and sexual energy for procreation. He creates war enabling the strongest to triumph. Mars is musically depicted in a stirring march in which enthusiasm characterises the masculine character. Saturn and Jupiter. Saturn represents concentration and withdrawal: the strongnotion of responsibility, seriousness, self-discipline and melancholy. Saturn is the hermit who will conquer his fears and worries in minimal conditions and by self-chastisement. This contemplative character is depicted in the music as if it isalmost standing still, which also reflects the given character of this planet. Jupiter represents growth and expansion: the positive, self-confidence, the good Samaritan, the healer. Jupiter is the philosopher who will make the world a betterplace, sees future possibilities, and searches for eternal values. He is the prophet who sometimes rants and raves his doctrine and proclamations, resulting musically in a whirling and upbeat finale. not looking back at what has been but searchingfor new challenges. Heaven and Earth was commisioned by the Music Lending and Information Centre (MUI), a department of the library for the province of Gelderland in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Gobelin Music Publications.

The new millennium inspires curiosity, optimism, and fear of the unknown. Belgian composer Johan Nij composed Millennium Fear to capture the uncertainty of this monumental event. The piece combines dynamic sounds, feverish rhythms, and surprising sound textures in the dialogues between different instrument groups. The piece expresses the thoughts and feelings many have toward the new millennium.

In Scotland, the monster of Loch Ness is a hot issue, but the American state of Montana enjoys a comparable phenomenon going by the name of Montana Nessie. In the western part of this remote state lies Flathead Lake: a lake of 45 kilometres /38miles in lenght and 24 kilometres /15 miles breath. At several places, its depth exeeds 100 metres.Nessies discovery takes us back to the year 1889, when captain James Kerr aboard the passengership U.S.Grant was startled by a ship unknown to himsuddenly approaching his vessel across Flathead Lake. However, it turned out not to be a ship but an undefinable animal of immense size. From that moment onwards, life would never be the same again in and around Flathead Lake. The composer wasinspired by the story, and summarized the events into a symphonic poem, but from a surprising angle:that of the monster. The exiting opening allows us to follow the monster in its natural surroundings. The fast follow-up movement depictsMontana Nessie trotting and frolicking about the Montana woods and prairies. From its abode, it thorougly enjoys everything around it. This period abruptly ends in a short climax (Chimes). The solo for cor anglais marks a new period in themonsters life. The presence of people has a paralizing effect and the apprehensive atmosphere of the slow movement may be felt profoundly. The monster observes and mildly teases the ship. Abhor sounds force the ship to a withdrawal. The movingmusical continuation depicts the triumphant monster dancing an ironic waltz. The monsters fear and anger at the intrusion of his freedom run through the piece like continuous threads, and develop into the works final theme. The Innocent Condemned tells of the so-called buck riders (bokkerijders) who, in the middle of the 18th Century caused mayhem in the area around Limburg. Calmer passages in the music depict the fear of the locals, while a vivo furioso describes a night raid, and powerful drum sounds together with emotional musical lines illustrate the execution of an innocent. A gripping piece of history caught in music!
