This arrangement features adaptations of the third and last movements of the Cantata. An introduction has been added, as well as a finale for the Gloria, for a more cohesive presentation. Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director’s discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. In the most literal sense: a piece for an occasion. The actual occasion was Jan de Haan’s twentieth anniversary as a conductor of the top Dutch brass band, “Soli Deo Gloria†(Leeuwarden). To mark the occasion, the band commissioned the Belgian comopser Jan Van der Roost to create a surprise piece: without knowledge of the person being celebrated, a suitable source of inspiration was sought for. After some thought the chorale-theme from Camille Saint-Saëns organ symphony was chosen, a piece with which Jan de Haan has a special bond.Apart from this chorale, Homage is also based on the names of notes taken from ‘Jan de Haan’ and ‘Soli Deo Gloria’, resulting in the tonerow: DEGAH. Both elements are combined together and form a grand climax towards the end of the piece when the whole band unites in the Saint Saëns’ theme. Homage wurde von Jan Van der Roost im Auftrage der Brass Band Soli Deo Gloria aus Leeuwarden geschrieben. Direkter Anlass dazu war das 20-jährige Jubiläum von Jan de Haan als Dirigent dieses Ensembles. Als Inspiration diente dem Komponistendas Choralthema der Orgelsymphonie von Camille Saint-Saëns, ein von Jan de Haan geschätztes Werk. Nebst diesem Choral basiert Homage ebenfalls auf den Notenbezeichnungen aus ‘Jan de Haan’ und ‘Soli Deo Gloria’, was die Notenreihe DEGAH ergab.Beide Elemente werden durcheinander verwendet, bis sich schließlich die ganze Band im Finale mit dem Saint-Saëns-Thema wieder zusammenfindet.

‘Three City Sketches’ was commissioned for Soli Deo Gloria Alkmaar from the Netherlands. The work’s three movements depict different aspects of the orchestra’s hometown. This is an exciting and epic piece for a contest or thematic concert. Three City Sketches werd geschreven in opdracht van Soli Deo Gloria Alkmaar. De drie delen van de compositie verklanken verschillende aspecten van de thuisstad van het orkest. Een enerverend, indrukwekkend werk voor een concours of een themaconcert! Die drei Sätze von Three City Sketches beschreiben drei Aspekte der Stadt Alkmaar: In New Horizons“ bricht ein Zug ins Unbekannte auf. Tower Music“ bezieht sich auf ein Werk eines Organisten aus Alkmaar. 8th October 1573“ erzählt schließlich die Geschichte vom Sieg des Fürsten von Oranien über Spanien. Ein episches Werk, das sich bestens für Wettbewerbe und thematische Konzerte eignet. Les trois mouvements de l’œuvre dépeignent des aspects différents de la ville d'Alkmaar (Pays-Bas). « New Horizons », nous met en mouvement, tel le départ d’un train. « Tower Music » fait référence une œuvre d’un des anciens organistes de l’église d’Alkmaar. La victoire du Prince d’Orange contre l’Espagne conclu cette composition captivante et épique. Three City Sketches (Tre schizzi della citt ) è stato commissionato per l’Associazione Soli Deo Gloria di Alkmaar nei Paesi Bassi. In France it is called Les anges dans nos campagnes, in Germany it is most widely known as Engel auf den Feldern singen and in England it was originally called Angels From the Realms of Glory but it often known as Angels We Have Heard on High. The subject was a perfect departure point for composing a symphonic poem with a variety of musical aspects reflecting the story. Lyricism (the theme of Roxane), dramatic episodes, as well as Debussy-inspired impressionist moments are some of the elements that give the band and its conductor the chance to expose themselves as a versatile ensemble being able to create colour, to sing and to play like virtuosi. This work is sure to become a standard item in the concert band repertoire.In Cyrano verklankt de componist Piet Swerts het romantische en tragische verhaal van de briljante dichter en zwaardkunstenaar Cyrano de Bergerac en zijn mooie, intellectuele nicht Roxane, op wie hij tot over zijn oren verliefdis. Zijn uiterlijk, met name zijn buitengewoon grote neus, belet hem om zijn gevoelens tegenover haar te uiten. Anton Karas grew up in a modest household in Vienna and became a self taught zither vituoso. He wrote the legendary Harry Lime Theme for the 1949 British film noir The Third Man. The melody became so popular, many people began calling The Third Man “The Zither Movieâ€! Toshio Mashima carefully turns this typically Viennese melody into a creative piece for concert band. Anton Karas, der aus einfachen Wiener Verhältnissen stammte und es als Autodidakt zu großer Virtuosität an der Zither brachte, schrieb das legendäre Harry-Lime-Thema“ für den Agentenfilm Der dritte Mann. Die Melodie war so populär, dass manche den Film gar The Zither Film“ nannten. Toshio Mashima setzte die stimmungsvolle, typisch wienerische Melodie geschickt für Blasorchester um. Tout le monde se souvient du Troisième Homme (1949) et de cette étrange et fascinante musique qui fut la révélation du film. Anton Karas (1906-1985), son compositeur et interprète, traversa le monde du spectacle comme un véritable météore. Sa bande originale jouée la cithare lui apporta la gloire et la richesse. Le thème du film se classa durant onze semaines en tête des meilleures ventes de disques aux États-Unis entre avril et juillet 1950. Le film fut couronné du Grand prix du Festival de Cannes 1949 et de l’Oscar de la meilleure photographie 1951.Il film Il Terzo Uomo (1949) è ricordato anche per l’affascinante colonna sonora che fu una vera e propria rivelazione. Anton Karas (1906-1985), compositore ed interprete, attraversò il mondo dello spettacolo come una meteora. La colonna sonora originale, eseguita alla cetra, gli portò gloria e ricchezza.
