Psalm XIX: The Heavens Declare was written by the Italian composer, writer, and theorist Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739). By profession Marcello served as a governor and chamber-lain in Italy, although he is well-known for his harsh satires of contemporary coposers, such as Vivaldi and Lotti, As a composer, Marcello was ingenious and imaginative; his works include opera librettos, concertos, vocal music, and psalm settings in cantana style. This particular psalm setting has become popular for organ, and, thanks to the talent of arranger Barry Toombs, is part of the repertoire of the Westwind Brass. Mr. Toombs's brass quintet arrangement of The Heavens Declare calls for the optional B Piccolo Trumpet in the 1st Trumpet part. It is preferred that the 1st trumpet player use a piccolo trumpet. However, if one is not available, B trumpet may be uses as a substitute.

Fort Fincastle was built in the Bahamas in 1793, constructed in the form of a ship’s bow so as to fool passing ships. The opening bars of Fincastle Overture reflect the form of the magnificent stronghold, before a heroic theme is heard in which the fort comes under repeated attack, and just about survives!

Fort Fincastle werd in 1793 in Nassau gebouwd, de hoofdstad van de Bahamas. De oprichter ervan, Lord Dunmore, gaf het fort een bijzonder vorm: een cirkelvormig gebouw met een puntige uitbouw, in de vorm van een boeg of voorstevenvan schip. Dit was bedoeld om vijandige schepen te misleiden. De klanken van de eerste maten verwijzen naar de contouren van een majestueus verdedigingsbolwerk, waarna een heldhaftig thema volgt. Fort Fincastle wurde 1793 in Nassau, der Hauptstadt der Bahamas, gebaut. Nur scheinbar ruhig sind die Stunden der Wache, die immer wieder von Angriffen unterbrochen werden, denen das stolze Fort aber zuletzt zu trotzen vermag.

Le prime misure di Fincastle Overture riflettono la straordinaria bellezza del forte e anticipano un tema eroico, che ricorda la sua funzione di difesa. La calma è solo apparente, il forte sar l’oggetto di un ennesimo attacco che sar eroicamente respinto.
