Commence! was commissioned by the Lynden High School Class 2017-2019 and the Lynden, WA Community, and is dedicated to Steve Herrick in celebration of his retirement. Mr. Herrick and I first collaborated on a commission in 2006, and I was immediately taken by the community and the music program in Lynden. It is truly one of the most beautiful places in the country and full of musical inspiration at every turn.

This piece is a loving tribute to Mr. Herrick and his amazing contribution to the students of Lynden for over thirty years. The music begins with a spirited section oscillating between 6/8 and 2/4 time. It should maintain a pulsing feeling throughout. The main melody appears at m. 25 and has a lilting, reminiscing quality to it. After some further development, it moves to a B-section at m. 41 with some warm brass passages. The woodwinds should soar over the top with their counter line. The lower voices take over the melody at m. 59. The harmony becomes more discordant at m. 71 with passages trading between the brass and woodwinds.

This tension releases into a slow section that features a flowing, heartfelt melody. This builds to the big moment at m. 112. The timpani ushers us back to the 6/8, 2/4 section. The melody is now accompanied by some flowing counterpoint at m. 153 which leads to the B-section again at m. 169. This time the woodwinds take the lead and the brass provide the counter line. A final big moment at m. 194 is the culmination and high point of the composition. A brief fast section puts a bow on the piece for a rousing finale.

Sleep, My Child was commissioned by the Madison Middle School Band and Orchestra in Tampa, Florida, and is dedicated to the memory of their Director of Orchestras Kevin Frye. Director of Bands Chris Shultz championed the commissioning of this piece to honor Kevin after he passed away in December 2016. Mr. Frye was a beloved member of the staff at Madison Middle as well as the music community of Tampa and the state of Florida. I was a personal friend of Kevin’s. We were in several musical groups together when we were young that were formative to both of our musical careers. I also guest conducted his Madison Middle School Orchestra several times over the past four years. His musicianship, teaching skills and love for his students were exemplary.When taking on the challenge of writing a piece to honor Kevin’s legacy, Mr. Shultz and I decided to try and include several important aspects of Kevin’s life into the piece. Kevin was proudly Jewish, a fantastic trumpet player and loved Jazz. With that in mind, and after a lot of research, a Jewish folk song Shlof, Mayn Kind was selected as the basis for the piece, not to be religious, but to honor his faith and heritage. Plus it is a beautiful song, and I felt the title reflected the sentiment I was looking to express, which is of someone taking rest after a long battle with illness. Thus, a lullaby seemed appropriate.I also wanted to incorporate Jazz into the piece, but in a concert setting, so you will hear as the piece develops, the harmonies of the folk song expand into ones found more commonly in Jazz compositions. Not in a far out way, but in a subtle way to again honor this part of his life. For example the climactic moment of the piece at the fermata in m. 57 is a Dbmaj9#11 chord. It appropriately give the piece the angst that I was looking for at this moment in the piece, while honoring the importance of Jazz in Kevin’s musical life.The piece was also conceived to include both the Madison band and orchestra in the performance at the premiere. I wanted the pieces to work separately by the band and separately by the orchestra, but I also wanted them to be able to play the piece together to honor Kevin.The piece begins with original material designed to set the mood of the piece with a tempo/style marking of pensive, but also as material that I used as connective musical tissue between statements of the folk song.  After this introduction, the folk song is presented by a solo violin (or clarinet) with orchestral accompaniment in a simple straight forward presentation of the song. This is followed by a woodwind section statement of the folk song accompanied by muted trumpets. During this presentation the harmony starts to expand with more color notes in the chords. The low brass are added half way through this statement to add depth and lushness.The introductory material returns, but with some angry hits in the lower voices. This leads to a full ensemble state of new material that is used to transition to the climax of the piece, and to build tension. After the build, the piece modulates to a shortened statement of the folk song with more advanced harmonies and an active counter line in the violas, horns, saxes and first clarinets to further build the tension.  This tension is released at the fermata in m. 57, as mentioned above. After a thoughtful pause, the piece concludes with a completion of the folk song again with a solo violin (or clarinet) followed by a return of the introductory material to tie the piece together. The piece ends hopeful, with a solo trumpet (Kevin’s instrument) that is dissonant at first, but then resolves as if to say - everything will be OK! It has been my distinct honor to have been asked to write this piece in Kevin’s memory! Taking its title from a poem about grief and loss by Chrissie Pinney, Live On honors the life of band director Linda Mann, to whom the piece is dedicated. The piece begins with a pensive intro before shifting to a whimsical theme that brings about happy thoughts of a life well-lived. After a return to the poignant opening material, the music surges to a triumphant conclusion based on an augmented version of the whimsical theme.
Live On was commissioned by Diplomat Middle School's staff, faculty and students, in Cape Coral, Florida, and is dedicated to the memory of their Director of Bands, Linda Mann. Director of Orchestras, Roland Forti, championed the commissioning of this piece to honor the life of Linda after her untimely passing in February of 2017. Linda Mann’s impact on the field of music education was profound and wide-reaching. She was a beloved member of the staff at Diplomat Middle School, as well as the music community of Cape Coral and the state of Florida. Linda was highly respected throughout the state, serving as recent past-president of the Florida Bandmasters Association.In discussing the type of piece the school wanted to honor Ms. Mann, they indicated the piece should “depict Linda’s personality: dynamic, sassy, yet thoughtful and almost mentor-like.” They wanted a piece that was upbeat, yet still had moments that were thoughtful, portraying the grief that the Diplomat Middle School community has suffered from the sudden loss of such a beloved teacher.After contemplating their thoughts, I did some research to find inspiration for the piece. This led me to poetry about grief and loss. In time, I stumbled upon a short, yet poignant poem that I felt perfectly depicted the sentiment that I wanted the piece to convey.  That poem is entitled Live On by Chrissie Pinney.Live OnNow as I live onWithout youI hope to keepThe pieces of youThat I loved so dearlyYour mannerismsAnd compassionate characterAnd smiles through struggleSo that youMay live on too -Chrissie PinneyI reached out to Ms. Pinney, and she graciously agreed to allow me to quote her powerful poem in these notes. She expressed that she was deeply touched that her work would inspire me to write a piece in honor of Linda Mann.The piece begins with a poignant, pensive opening section. The use of the musical interval of a tritone between the first two openly voiced chords are used to represent the sadness we all feel from this type of loss. When I sat in front of my piano and started to work on this piece, my hands seemed to naturally and immediately play these first two chords, which set the process in motion of composing the piece.After the somber opening, the piece shifts to a whimsical theme that I hope brings about happy thoughts of Linda and her personality. It was also my intent, however, to include some musical dissonance in the theme that still reflected the bittersweet loss at the same time. The piece develops into a secondary theme that is a quasi inversion of the main fast theme. This section is followed by a return of the opening material, with snippets of the fast theme intertwined, before the piece builds to a triumphant, augmented presentation of the main theme in a lush form to complete the work.It is my hope that in some small way, this piece will bring comfort to those affected by the loss of Linda Mann, and that the music will allow her memory to Live On.–Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2017.

Inspired by the memory of an influential music educator, Carol Brittin Chambers has woven a multitude of grooves, colors, and uplifting themes into To Create a Voice. Chambers has attempted to convey distinct moods and emotions that this educator tried to instill in his students. In honor of this dynamic teacher, you will hear Hot Cross Buns cleverly placed throughout the composition.
To Create a Voice was commissioned by the Valley Concert Band in Stockton, California. The piece premiered in October 2017, in memory and celebration of Chris Anderson, a local musician and educator.When writing this piece, I tried to convey certain moods and emotions throughout: soulful at the beginning with calm woodwind chords and solo trombone; increased energy throughout the various sections of the piece; exploration of different grooves and colors; an uplifting, emotional ending that leaves the listener with a sense of how positive and loving Chris was.This piece is largely inspired by a specific quote from Chris:Most people would consider the sounds students first make on their instruments to be cringe-worthy, but to me that’s music to my ears, because that’s the first time students put a voice to their instrument. Over time those voices become stronger; they become clear, more confident, and get to a point where they use those voices to communicate with each other, and to their audiences.To relate to the first notes on the instrument idea, I used motifs based on the first notes most beginners ever play, do-re-mi, which are introduced at the beginning of the piece with the trombone solo, Chris’ instrument. During the section at m. 15, the brass introduce a chorale that I named Chris’ Theme while the woodwinds keep reminding us of do-re-mi. Later in the piece (mm. 71 and 79), I use these notes again, but in reverse, which becomes a reference to the first song most beginners learn, Hot Cross Buns. This section is also meant to portray Chris’ quirky and joking side. In mm. 75 and 83, Chris’ Theme presents itself again a couple of times in response to Hot Cross Buns.Toward the end, at the uplifting moment (m. 97), do-re-mi is heard again, but this time in harmony with mi-fa-sol. This represents the ultimate satisfaction we all feel as musicians when we have finally progressed enough to play in harmony with others. The half-time feeling in 3 at that moment also has significance, relating (rhythmically) to those important three notes again.I really hope you enjoy performing and listening to this piece as much as I have enjoyed creating it!

The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notesform the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction.

Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from the Friesland area of Holland. He was a farmer who became a resistance fighter against Dutch oppressors in around 1500. Whether Magnus was a hero or barbarian is still debatable, but composer Jan de Haan was fascinated by the exciting story and let it fuel his imagination. The protagonist is introduced with a capricious theme which is followed by “De Arumer Swarte Heap,“ the troops who took to the battlefields against the Dutch. An eerie calm takes over moments before Pier and his troops let their battle cries sound. The work ends as the disillusioned Pier retreats. A concert work overflowing with excitement!

Pierius Magnus ist eine historische Figur aus Friesland, ein Bauer und Aufständischer gegen die holländischen Unterdrücker um 1500. Ob Held oder Barbar lässt sich heute einfach nicht zweifelsfrei belegen, aber der Komponist fand die Geschichte einfach zu spannend, um sie nciht als Inspirationsquelle zu nutzen. In Pierius Magnus wird der Nationalheld gleich zu Beginn des Werkes mit einem kapriziösen Thema vorgestellt, gefolgt von seinem Haufen De Arumer Swarte Heap. Dann- bevor der Kampf beginnt- tritt ein Moment der Ruhe ein, bevor Pier und seine Truppe in den Kampf ziehen. Das Werk endet mit dem Rücken des desillusionierten Pierius.

Pier Gerlofs Donia est l’un des personnages les plus célèbres de l’histoire de la Frise au cours des années 1500. L’Histoire ne nous permet pas de discerner les réelles intentions de cet homme surnommé le grand Pier de par son imposante stature. Était-il un combattant de la liberté ou un authentique barbare ? Le compositeur a trouvé toutefois en cette emblématique figure, une source d’inspiration fascinante.

Pierius Grelofs Donia è una delle più celebri figure della storia della regione olandese della Frisia nel corso del 1500. La storia non ci permette di discernere le reali intenzioni di quest’uomo soprannominato Grutte Pier (il grande Pier) per la sua statura imponente. Fu un paladino della libert o un semplice barbaro? Il compositore ha trovato in questa emblematica figura un’affascinante fonte d’ispirazione. Le prime misure di Pierius Magnus descrivono l’eroe nazionale attraverso un tema capriccioso. Un secondo tema dipinge la brigata nera di Arum, pronta ad affrontare gli olandesi. Un breve momento di calma fa da preludio al combattimento, prima che Pier Grelofsentri in azione. Disilluso, il grande Pier si ritira; la fine dell’opera sancisce anche la fine del combattimento.

Saving Private Ryan is certainly one of Steven Spielberg's most powerful films. The brilliant John Williams score creates part of this power. Hymn to the Fallen one of the most powerful and emotional melodies which appears during the closing credits, evokes a feeling of hope and strength amid the overall tone of reverence. Philip Sparke has transcribed this moving work for brass band using John Williams original orchestral score as the source. For added effect this work can also be performed with a wordless chorus, with parts being available separately.

This delightful new composition takes its inspiration from the classic French swash buckling tale of Cyrano de Bergerac and his fight to win the love of the beautiful maiden Roxane. The subject was a perfect departure point for composing a symphonic poem with a variety of musical aspects reflecting the story. Lyricism (the theme of Roxane), dramatic episodes, as well as Debussy-inspired impressionist moments are some of the elements that give the band and its conductor the chance to expose themselves as a versatile ensemble being able to create colour, to sing and to play like virtuosi. This work is sure to become a standard item in the concert band repertoire.

In Cyrano verklankt de componist Piet Swerts het romantische en tragische verhaal van de briljante dichter en zwaardkunstenaar Cyrano de Bergerac en zijn mooie, intellectuele nicht Roxane, op wie hij tot over zijn oren verliefdis. Zijn uiterlijk, met name zijn buitengewoon grote neus, belet hem om zijn gevoelens tegenover haar te uiten. De vele verwikkelingen die uit deze situatie voortkomen zijn te herkennen in deze programmatische compositie.

Piet Swerts erzahlt hier musikalisch die tragisch-romantische Geschichte von Cyrano de Bergerac, der einem verliebten Freund hilft, seine Liebe zu erobern und sich dann selbst unglucklich in dessen Angebetete verliebt. When you have been playing in a band for a long time, you will know that music belongs to the most beautiful moments in life, but also to the roughest times. Making music together can give you strength when things are difficult.To a Friend is a wonderfully comforting work for anyone going through a dark time. Jacob de Haan composed the work for his father in law, Gerard Bosch, a musician to the core. The piece received its first performance justweeks before his passing. On a sun-kissed evening, his friends, the musicians of his two music societies Oefening Baart Kunst (Practice Makes Perfect) Otterlo, and the Reünie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps (Reunion BandArtillery Trumpet Corps) played the work for Gerard - an unknowing yet beautiful goodbye.

An einem sonnigen Abend spielten seine Freunde, die Musiker seiner beiden Musikvereine Oefening Baart Kunst (Übung macht den Meister“) Otterlo und das Reünie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps (Reunion BandArtillerie Trompet Corps) , das Werk für Gerard. Ein unbewusster und zugleich schöner Abschied.

Jouer ensemble peut donner de la force lorsque les choses sont difficiles.To a Friend est une œuvre merveilleusement réconfortante pour toute personne confrontée une période sombre. Jacob de Haan a composé cette pièce pour son beau-père, Gerard Bosch, lui-même musicien passionné. Elle a étécréée quelques semaines avant son décès. Lors d’une fin de journée ensoleillée, ses amis, les musiciens de ses deux sociétés musicales (Oefening Baart Kunst Otterlo et le Reünie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps ), ont interprétéla nouvelle composition pour Gerard. Ils l’ignoraient alors, mais ce petit concert constitua un adieu merveilleux.

...Then Thy Words Will Take Wing... is a four movement composition based upon drawings made by Russian painter Zinovii Tolkatchev (1903-1970), who served as official artist during the liberation of concentration camps in Auschwitz. After the war, Tolkatchev’s works were published and now tour the world as a travelling exhibition. This composition is a tribute to the victims of the Holocaust who still remain nameless, and is a powerful piece to include in any concert programme.

“…dan zullen uw woorden vleugels krijgen...” is een vierdelige compositie gebaseerd op vier tekeningen van de Wit-Russische schilder Zinovii Tolkatchev (1903-1970). Tijdens de bevrijding van de concentratiekampen Auschwitz en Majdanekwas Tolkatchev bij het Rode Leger in dienst als tekenaar. Na de oorlog verschenen de tekening van Tolkatchevs in albumvorm en momenteel reizen ze de wereld over, te bekijken bij tentoonstellingen. De compositie is een eerbetoonaan alle naamloze slachtoffers van de Holocaust en grijpt daarbij ook terug op de hoofdgedachte van de Yad Vashems, het gedenkbeeld van de Holocaust in Jeruzalem.

Für Blasorchester, Violoncello und Kinderchor...dann wachsen Flügel Deinen Worten...“ ist eine viersätzige Komposition nach Zeichnungen des weißrussischen Malers Zinovii Tolkatchev (1903-1970), der bei der Befreiung der Konzentrationslager Auschwitz und Majdanek in der Roten Armee als Zeichner diente. Nach dem Krieg wurden seine Bilder veröffentlicht und wandern jetzt in einer Ausstellung um die Welt. Diese Komposition will an die vielen namenlos gebliebenen Opfern des Holocaust erinnern und damit einen der Leitgedanken Yad Vashems, der Holocaust-Gedenkstätte in Jerusalem, vermitteln.

…Alors tes paroles s’envolent en chanson… est une oeuvre en quatre mouvements s’inspirant de quatre dessins du peintre biélorusse Zinovii Tolkatchev (1903-1970) qui servait dans l’Armée rouge en tant qu’illustrateur lors de la libération des camps de concentration d’Auschwitz et de Majdanek, sa t che consistant réaliser des croquis des atrocités commises. Plus tard, les enfants de Tolkatchev firent don de la série au mémorial Yad Vashem de Jérusalem. Ces dessins sont rassemblés en une exposition qui fait aujourd’hui le tour du monde.

Un brano in quattro movimenti che si ispirano a quattro dipinti del pittore bielorusso Zinovii Tolkachev (1903-1970) che servì nell’Armata Rossa come illustratore durante la liberazione dei campi di concentramento di Auschwitz e Majdanek. Il suo compito era realizzare schizzi delle atrocit commesse. In seguito, i figli di Tolkachev decisero di donare la serie di disegni al Memorial Yad Vashem di Gerusalemme, disegni ora oggetto di una mostra itinerante.

A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

Een flashback is een psychologisch fenomeen: een hedendaagse belevenis roept zomaar uit het niets herinneringen uit het verleden op. Zo verging het ook Jan de Haan, toen hij een muziekstuk voor het Nationaal Jeugd Fanfare Orkest inopdracht kreeg. Het is het orkest waarin hij zelf ooit speelde. Plotseling viel hem het werk Deep Harmony in, een werk dat hij destijds vaak had gespeeld. Zijn flashback op dit Engelse kerklied nam hij als inspiratiebronen hij verwerkte het in dit nieuwe muziekstuk. De juiste inval op het juiste moment, zoals nu iedereen kan horen!

Ein Flashback“ ist ein psychologisches Phänomen: Eine Erfahrung weckt scheinbar aus dem Nichts die Erinnerung an lang Zurückliegendes. So ging es auch Jan de Haan, als er ein Stück für ein Jugendauswahlorchester der Niederlande, in dem er selbst einst mitspielte, schreiben sollte. Plötzlich fiel ihm ein damals oft programmiertes Stück namens Deep Harmony ein und er nahm diesen Flashback als Inspiration, dieses englische Kirchenlied in seinem neuen Werk zu verarbeiten. Der richtige Einfall im richtigen Moment, wie das Resultat beweist!

Le flash-back est un phénomène psychologique. Des événements du passé, imprimés dans la mémoire long terme, resurgissent comme une réponse inconsciente et soudaine un stimulus lié une expérience antérieure.Cette œuvre a été composée l’occasion du cinquantième anniversaire de l’Orchestre de Fanfare National des Jeunes des Pays-Bas, une formation talentueuse, dont Jan de Haan fut lui-même membre, au cours des années 1960. Jeune musicien, il éprouvait un profond respect pour le chef d’alors, Piebe Bakker (1929-2002), un homme passionné, avec un style de direction très stimulant. En revenant sur cette période, quarante ans après, Jan de Haan a revécu lesnombreuses interprétations de la pièce Deep Harmony. La mélodie scintillante - extraite d’un cantique anglais - lui est alors apparue comme un flash-back et c’est comme un éclair mental qu’il a choisi de lui redonner vie dans le passage final de cette œuvre.
