Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was a painter, sculptor, inventor, philosopher and researcher. He is renowned as the original “Renaissance Man.†“I will preserve the memory of myself in the minds of others†was one of his maxims. Among his most famous works of art are the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and the Vitruvian Man. He left an extensive collection of handwritten documents in his notebooks. These books, known as codices, survive in various volumes such as the Codex Atlanticus, Codex Madrid, Codex Trivulzianus etc.). They include sketches of ground-breaking inventions as well as studies and commentaries which span the gamut of human study. The left-handed da Vinci wrote the texts in mirror writing. Through wars and other upheavals, the documents were scattered throughout Europe and much of his work disappeared. Leonardo da Vinci wanted to leave a kind of encyclopaedia for posterity and, although it is estimated that up to 80% of his manuscripts were lost, some 6,000 individual documents survive to this day, the contents of which in many cases were only understood centuries later.

Handel's Oralorio Saul, composed in 1739, contains a series of instrumental movements which provide commentary on the action. Composers have often written works in the form of suites from these movements. Handel's blocks of polyphonic music are also particularly suitable for wind band. His orchestral suites were usually performed in Ihe open air. Many of his themes rank among the great inventions of musical history. They give his music dignity and greatness and at the same time they remain popular in character. The instrumental movements from 'Saul' are suitable for concerts, including those in churches, for serenades and for contests from intermediate to advanced level.(2 Floten, 1 Oboe ad lib., 1 Fagott ad lib., 1 Klarinette in Es ad lib., 3 Klarinetten in B, 2 Alt-Saxophone in Es, 1 Tenor-Saxophon in B, 3 Horner in F, 3 Trompeten in B, 3 Posaunen, 2 Flugelhorner (Kornette) in B, 1 Tenorhorn in B, 1 Bariton, 2 Tuben, Pauken, Schlagzeug: Glockenspiel, kleine Trommel, grosse Trommel, Becken).

Using a symphonic variant style (like that of Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis), James Curnow has written a magnificent compositional exploration of themes based on the shape-note tune “Resignation.” Advanced groups love to play music at this level of challenge and substance, and directors will appreciate the developmental techniques woven into its fabric. Add a history unit on The Sacred Harp for some cross-curricular work.

The German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his Academic Fesival Overture in the summer of 1880, together with the Tragic Overture. The occasion was the honorary degree which Brahms had received a year before from the University of Breslau. Initially, Brahms had sent a thank-you note, but he was expected to express his gratitude with a composition. The premiere took place on 4 January, 1881 - conducted by the composer himself - in Breslau. For this sparkling work, Brahms used various German student songs as a basis in an inventive way - and a little jestingly. Owing to the accessible development, lyrical warmth, humor, and persuasiveness, the Academic Festival Overtureis still a popular concert work. This transcription for concert band, which has been written by Tohru Takahashi, does justice to the original composition.

Brilliant, clever and brimming with excitement, another ingenious Himes masterpiece! The objective of Thingamajig is to create a whimsical contraption of sound in the same spirit as the late Rube Goldberg, which appeared as cartoons in the New York Evening Mail. It uses melodic and rhythmic patterns - with help of conventional and unconventional percussion as well as verbal effects from the band members - to convey a unique attempt at inventiveness. The enthused percussion section will use instruments such as a metal pipe, kitchen pans and a bicycle horn.

Of all of Gordon Jacob's major contributions to the British wind band repertoire, the William Byrd Suite (written in 1923) stands as his most-often programmed work. Though originally based on six movements from William Byrd's Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, this setting for developing band incorporates two contrasting movements including The Earle of Oxford's Marche and Wolsey's Wilde. Like Jacob's wind band work, the music is not a mere transcription from the original keyboard collection, but rather stylized with his own inventive musical spirit for modern concert band. A wealth of material here that opens doors to teachable moments as musical textures---dynamic contrasts, articulations, scoring options---are continually changing. Bravo! Simple aleatoric devices and clever effects combine to tell the story of a haunted clock factory and its mischievous inhabitants. Beginning with the sound of a single clock, additional clocks seemingly come to life and join in, creating a chorus of clock effects including wind-up, grandfather and cuckoo clocks. The Dies Irae is presented throughout in various altered versions, adding to the somewhat diabolical nature of the scene. Extremely unique and inventive!

István Bogár's series of movements intended for youngsters is colourfully instrumented, evocative music, rich in melodic invention in character it is most closely akin to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ballet music. In the opening movement (Little march), little boys wearing paper shakos on their heads and carrying wooden swords play at soldiers. The following movement, Humming, is the only movement in the suite that is calm and in odd-numbered rhythm in it the children gather flowers in their little baskets, and meanwhile hum pleasant tunes. The third movement is a funny game, with its tempo sometimes speeding up, sometimes slowing down, but by the end really going wild. The titleof the finale is Game of tag. The tiny formal sections and interludes in this lively, cheerful music are linked together by a recurring rondo theme, and the chase ends with a brief coda.
