“Iron Mountain” portrays the legend of the Erzberg in Austria in an impressive musical manner. At the beginning, the atmosphere of the cave where the Waterman resides comes to life through simulated water droplets. The Waterman is pursued and captured by humans. In his desperation, he pleads for freedom and presents an offer to the people: gold mines for a year, silver mines for ten years, oriron mines forever. The clear response from the people is iron forever. The composition's finale emphasizes this choice with impactful anvil strikes, and the Erzberg rises triumphantly to the forefront of the narrative.

Iconogrophy from thee great American West abounds in this fun programmatic work by James Meredith.Good music played well inspires the imagination . This rollicking grade 4 work is a joyous romp with cowboys on the range, roping and branding, and breaking the wild broncs . A slower middle section envisions the vast evening sky of the open prairie with twinkling stars, a harmonica by the flickering flame of a campfire, and even the presence of a rattlesnake nearby . It is definitely not a novelty piece but as always, educational and musically challenging .

Alchemy is an ancient philosophy that sought to turn iron into gold. The composer saw a parallel in music: taking the notes of a scale and turning them into music seems just as magical. The notes are like iron and the process of turning them into music makes them as precious as gold.

David R. Holsinger returns to the band world with this first major composition written since his 2015 stroke. Commissioned to pay homage to Phi Beta Mu Band Fraternity, it contains all those Holsinger compositional fingerprints we enjoy playing. The plaintive opening prelude, the poly-chordal texture, followed by the robust presto we expect from this composer. Vigorous asymmetrical melodies, jubilant rhythms, fluctuating accents, poly-lineal textures, multi-layered, and electrifying excitement to the end!

The term, stryker refers to an individual who assisted a blacksmith with his craft, wielding a hammer and shaping iron to their will. As the title suggests, Stryker is a dark and harsh piece full of percussive sounds depicting a Stryker as they assist a blacksmith. The break drum gives us a hammered-iron effect while the china cymbal mimics the steam of tempering steel. Students will enjoy this fast-paced and intense piece, great for opening a concert or providing an exciting finish.

High atop a red mountain overlooking the magnificent city of Birmingham, Alabama, stands an iron sentinel---a monument of Vulcan that keeps watch over the City of Steel. Through the Vulcan's Eye is comprised of four melodies, each aurally describing a view from the top of the mountain and inspired by the composer's childhood experiences in Alabama's largest metropolis. Broad brush strokes of sound blanket the work, enhanced by brilliant solo passages and total involvement from the percussion. A grand work on a grand scale! (7:09).
