This concert overture, which has the air of a symphonic poem, takes its inspiration from an ancient Roman bridge. A massive introduction, a threatening allegro and alternating virtuoso and chorale themes quickly succeed each other. Trombones and trumpets introduce a rhythmical theme which develops throughout all instrument groups. The allegro is characterised by a quasi-obsessive cadence which depicts a Roman army constantly beating time. Call of the Aboriginals Uluru - Kata Tjuta was commissioned by Nara Municipal Ichijo Senior High School Symphonic Band, Nara City, Nara Prefecture, Japan, to commemorate their 60th anniversary. Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is an immense monolith rising in the vastness of the Australian outback. Famously also known as Ayers Rock, it is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is a sacred site for the Aboriginal people of the area, the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, but has also become a popular tourist destination, creating cultural and environmental conflicts. This work, which is written in a style typical of the composer, tells a dramatic tale adventure inspired bythe life of the indigenous people and the magnificent scenery of Uluru. This work is suited for contests as well as thematic concerts. Cittaslow is an international network of more than 220 towns in 30 countries. Its members are towns where people are still finding themselves reminiscing over the old times; towns that are rich in theatres, squares, cafés, restaurants and spiritual places; towns with untouched landscapes and charming craftsman where people are still able to recognize the slow course of the seasons, and respect their authentic products, true taste as well as their health. The Hymn of Cittaslow, which was commissioned by the organisation itself, is entirely inspired by their commitment to the preservation of the member towns. The tempo is naturally ‘slow', and the themes somehow soundfamiliar. On the one hand, the music emanates peace and quiet, but it also sounds grand in its lyricism, thereby reflecting the beauty of the Cittaslow towns. Not much is known about the origin of Huntingtower, except for the fact that this ballad was composed in 1931 by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936), commissioned by Edwin Franko Goldman and the American Bandmaster Association, and was premiered on 17 April 1932 at a concert in memory of John Philip Sousa in Washington D.C. It is not even certain whether Respighi arranged the work himself, or left this to someone else. Huntingtower is the name of a castle in Scotland, where Respighi spent some time. It is possible that this ballad contains his musical impressions of his stay there. The orchestration on this CD, made by Franco Cesarini in 1987, is an adaptation ofthe work to the demands of the contemporary concert band. The commissioner of this work requested a piece that characterized humankind's ability to overcome personal tragedy, a scenario which often leaves one with a philosophy of serenity. The composer decided to use the analogy of the sequoia, a generic name for the huge redwood trees, particularly the Californian redwood. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground which require heat to open their shells and germinate. The redwood forests are frequently subject to fires which can destroy the mother tree but ironically also provide the impetus for their seeds to spring into life; the trees actually need a disaster to procreate. In a similar way, the human spirit can actually gain from setbacks - we become stronger after adversity. The music falls into sections which can broadly be characterised as doubt, conflict, catharsis, inner calm and, finally, triumph.

A Sevenoaks Suite was commissioned by the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Concert Band from Kent in the south-east of England. The suite describes 3 famous landmarks in the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge area: ‘Knole Park’, situated to the south-east of Sevenoaks. ‘The Chapel - Tonbridge School’: This movement centres around a hymn-like chorale, depicting the years of worship that have taken place within the chapel, and ‘The Vine Bandstand’ suggesting the type of music often played in bandstands. It is in march form, but is not actually a march throughout, veering off into other styles before ending emphatically.A Sevenoaks Suite werd geschreven in opdracht van de Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Concert Band uit Kent, in het zuidoosten van Engeland. De suite beschrijft drie beroemde landschapselementen en bouwwerken in de buurt van Sevenoaks en Tonbridge: als eerste ‘Knole Park’, dat ten zuidoosten van Sevenoaks ligt. I Love the 207 was composed in February 2010 for a commission by Osumi Symphonic Band in Kyoto. It was first performed on 25 April 2010 by Osumi Symphonic Band, conducted by Masanori Ozaki. This piece begins with an introduction to present the instruments, followed by a light scherzo. The title is an affectionate reference to the commuter rail 207 series of the West Japan Railway Company. When the band started their activity, the 207 series trains began running through the fields next to the building where they practice. The composer hopes that the trains continue to run and bring smiles to people’s faces.I Love the 207 is in februari 2010 gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Osumi Symphonic Band uit Kyoto, Japan. Le titre fait affectueusement référence aux trains de banlieue de la série 207 de la West Japan Railway Company. En effet, les débuts de l’orchestre co ncidèrent avec l’introduction de ces trains sur la ligne qui traverse les champs avoisinant le b timent où se déroulent les répétitions. Three Norwegian Sketches was commissioned by Åndalsnes Musikkforening, Norway, who are conducted by John Hudson. The three contrasting movements - TROLLVEGGEN (The Troll Wall), RAUMA ELV (River Rauma) and RAUMABANEN (The Rauma Line) - describe life and scenery around the town of Åndalsnes on the beautiful west coast of Norway. This is a challenging, imaginative and versatile new work, ideal for a concert or a contest. Jacques Offenbach was born in 1819 in Cologne, Germany, but as a child he moved to Paris where he received a thorough musical education. In his operetta Orpheus in the Underworld, Offenbach parodies the famous Greek legend of Orpheus and Euridice. Indirectly, however, he criticises the complacency of many of his contemporaries. The overture was not written entirely by Offenbach, Carl Binder added various pieces to it for a Viennese production of this operetta in 1860 and since then, these pieces have remained part of the composition. This appealing transcription includes the famous Can Can which is sure to get your audience high kicking in the aisles!In de operette Orphée aux Enfers (Orpheus in de onderwereld) parodieert Offenbach het beroemde verhaal van Orpheus en Euridice uit de oude Griekse sagenwereld - indirect stelt hij echter de zelfgenoegzaamheid van veelvan zijn tijdgenoten aan de kaak. De ouverture is niet geheel van Offenbachs hand. Carl Binder heeft er diverse stukken aan toegevoegd voor een Weense productie in 1860, en die zijn er sindsdien in gebleven. Wil van der Beek maakteeen transcriptie voor harmonieorkest van de aanstekelijke ouverture - waarin natuurlijk de beroemde cancan is verwerkt.In seiner Operette Orpheus in der Unterwelt (Orphée aux Enfers) parodiert Offenbach die berühmte Erzählung von Orpheus und Eurydike aus der klassischen griechischen Sagenwelt.
