This work was composed as a commission by the Aikodai Meiden High School Symphonic Band, for the 50th anniversary of their annual concert; the title A Golden Jubilation is a reference to this. The close friendship between Hiroki Ito, theconductor of the band, and Satoshi Yagisawa resulted in this brilliant and exhilarating fanfare of approximately two minutes in length; the piece is ideal to use as a concert opener. The original composition was arranged for an extremely wide rangeof instruments and a band of 200 musicians, including a separate ‘banda’, harp and a variety of special instruments. This new version has been rescored for standard band instrumentation by the composer himself. Jubilate’s main theme comes from the Gregorian chant on the Psalm Jubliate Deo omnis terra. The work itself was inspired by the sacredhistory of the Waldkirch (a forest village) community, located on the Swiss/German boarder. It tells a tale of the Irish and Scottish monks who build the first wooden church at the site of what is now Waldkirch, of the dramatic events, good and bad, that have taken place over the centuries and of the flourishing community that has withstood the trials of time.

Jubilant Spirit is sure to become a favorite among music educators, performers, and audience members. The high-energy introduction makes this piece an ideal opening for both concert and contest performances. The clever and spirited theme is shared by woodwinds, trumpets, and keyboards and supported by the low brass and horn. The beautiful Andantino provides every section the chance to play expressively and to explore each performer's ability and understanding of lyrical playing. Tasteful percussion writing contributes to the drive of the piece as well as giving the percussionists the opportunity to be fully involved in every section of the piece. Jubilant Spirit has been carefully edited to help the music educator maximize the effectiveness of style and dynamics and to also teach the concept of phrase development, especially in the lyrical middle section.

Commissioned to write a piece as a tribute to a horn playing band director friend, the composer decided it would be totally appropriate to weave melodies from Mozart's 3rd horn concerto into the fabric of this mostly original work. This is indeed a celebratory, jubilant overture, with the outer sections being in a jovial 6/8 rhythmic feel, and the slower-tempo 4/4 middle section expressively drawing on Mozart's Concerto Theme. Let your band celebrate and fully experience this musical magic!

As the title implies, there is a dichotomy of spirit within the contrasting sections. But, there is also a mutual thematic development which makes this composition unique. After beginning with a lyrical introduction in which the trumpet invokes an expressive solo passage, the work then progresses with an energetic rhythmic pattern which offers and leads to a joyful spirit of celebration. A recapitulation of the original theme forms a variation to the end. This distinctive composition was selected by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation to receive the NJSCA Fellowship award. Very nice!

Opening with a lush flute soli, Into Heaven’s Hands explodes with power, emotion and jubilation in celebration of a beautiful life. The powerful opening gives way to a lyrical and whimsical faster section. David Shaffer’s mastery of intricate harmonic progression is on full display throughout this work. A slower, lyrical middle section compliments the entire piece with a balance of pure musical emotion. The percussion writing is simple but very effective in producing an exciting and musical experience for both the players and the listeners. An excellent choice for contest or festival!
