Adapted from the slow movement of Bourgeois' own Sonata for Brass Quintet, Northern Lament is a powerful work with a fiery climax in the middle and thematic material derived from a simple & memorable melody. This piece originated in the slow movement of Sonata for Brass Quintet, which I wrote in 1965 whilst still a pupil of Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music, London. It had been commissioned by the Halle Brass Quintet, although they never performed the work. In 1997, Timothy Reynish suggested that I should arrange the work for wind orchestra. I decided to expand the movement into something more than double its original length, adding a fiery climax to its central section. The whole movement derives from the simple melody stated at the beginning. Because of Timothy Reynish's association with the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England and because the original sonata was never played by the northern-based Halle Brass Quintet who invited me to write it, I decided to call the new piece Northern Lament..

The artistic impact of Christopher Kyle Green continues to grow. The Lament of Familiar Ruins is a musical depiction of a personal trauma based on a house fire. Inspired and influenced by feelings that words cannot explain, the ensemble is given an opportunity to convey true grief, longing, fear, and emptiness. This symbolic work captivates the performers and audience and creates an atmosphere of experiencing life’s unexpected hardships. With gorgeous yet haunting harmonies and melodies, the concert hall will fill with emotion as the piece encourages individual vulnerability. Appropriate for concert festivals and assessments.

This little concerto for clarinet was written for Peter Holligan , a friend of its composer, and the Fife Youth Concert Band (Scotland). The work was based on traditional Celtic music, and consists of three movements. 1. Reel - a fast dance ending in an atmospheric but virtuoso cadenza. 2. Lament - a slow and melancholy song hinting at the sound of bagpipes. 3. A fast and virtuoso dance in 6/8 time with Irish influence. The work is a wonderful audience-pleaser and an absolute 'must' for all clarinet-players. The band too is called upon and by all means does have its part to play in the piece. Band grade 4, soloist grade 5. Orkest graad 4, solo graad 5. In Greek mythology, Zeus gave Pandora a box, but warned her never to open it. But the urge to open it overcame her. All of life’s miseries came out of the box, let free into the world. The final thing remaining in the box was hope, and a new beginning. This powerful and poignant work depicts Pandora’s myth. A bold and forceful opening statement gives way to a beautiful and haunting melody. Lush and mournfully dissonant harmonies gradually build to a climax of incredible emotion and power. As the music ends, we are reminded of a new hope and a new beginning, creating a sensitive and memorable moment. A meaningful and significant addition to the concert band repertoire; destined to be a classic.

Ãrpád Balázs (*1937) composed the first version of the work between 1994 and 1996 for tárogató and concert band. Since this traditional Hungarian instrument is rarely found in ensembles abroad, a soprano saxophone can serve as an alternative solo instrument. The composer uses melodies from the early 18th century, from the age of Rákóczi's war of independence. An ambitious framework is given to the work by the reminiscing, solemnly flowing brass chorus, which is built of the motives of the folk song Oh,Rákóczi, Bercsényi (Hej, Rákóczi, Bercsényi). As a contrast serves then Panna Czinka's ancient “violin lamentâ€. Following this, in a pierced-work-like fashion, the folk song The dew of green forest (Zöld erdo harmatát) comes in, then, as the culmination of the work, the well-known, wild Kuruc dance of CsÃnom Palkó appears. In conclusion, Kuruc Pictures is a tastefully constructed, finely harmonised and orchestrated orchestral tableau.

Depicting three contrasting and intriguing settings from early American lore, Rick Kirby masterfully brings these images to life in this suite for band. The first movement tells the legend of The Phantom Drummer with unique orchestrational effects. The second movement, The Lady's Lament, mourns the loss of loved ones in the Revolutionary War, and the suite concludes with the lively dance Virginia Two-Step. Rich in stylistic and tonal variety, this is an appealing work for concert or festival use. Duration: 8:00.

In A Medieval Christmas, Philip Sparke uses three ancient melodies in creating a distinctive and appealing setting for band. That fact that these carols are still popular today after hundreds of years is a testament to their enduring power and beauty. This suite includes Gaudete, a song of praise from the Middle Ages, Coventry Carol, a song of lament from the 14th century, and the familiar In Dulci Jubilo.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) completed his Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor in 1803, not long after writing the famous letter to his brothers, the Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he lamented his increasing deafness. He gave the first performance of the piece, as soloist, on April 5 in a public benefit concert at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The opening melody in the first movement bears striking similarity to the first theme heard in Mozart's 24th piano concerto. As a whole, the piece provides an essential link between the Mozartean charm of the two earlier concertos and the more idiosyncratic work found in his middle period. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Piano.
