Encourage the ensemble to play with a unified articulation style, maintain a proper balance, and establish a consistent tempo through this section as several recurring rhythms must be performed consistently. Measure 38 features a trumpet solo, so be sure that the rest of the ensemble balances their line to support the solo instrument. In the section that begins at m. 67, there is an optional solo opportunity for trumpet and trombone. Both of these sections provide nice contrast against the full ensemble sections that are present in the work. The section at m. 81 includes a call-and-response section between woodwind, brass and percussion groups. Be sure that as groups enter, the tempo remains consistent and that the winds articulation style is unified and complimentary to the percussion. As the opening fanfare returns at m. 101, remind the ensemble to play with consistent style, balance and tempo as they did in the opening. As the ensemble begins the part of the journey with Apollo at m. 110, the music contains unique layers that must work together to be effective and set up the material that begins at m. 127. Encourage the group to play so they can hear all other lines, and allow their energy to grow into a focused musical celebration by the final note. Aeolus is the Greek mythological god of the winds. The title of this piece was chosen, in part, because of the Aeolian quality of the music. Although not strictly harmonized in the Aeolian mode, the themes themselves are purely Aeolian. The compositional form bookends a broad and dramatic middle section with two sections in regal march style. Aeolus is sure to be a great teaching tool for young bands!.Aeolus is the god of the winds in Greek mythology. The opening section of the music should be performed in a march-like manner at a brisk tempo deemed appropriate by the director for the ensemble. The countermelody first heard at m. 31 should soar above the ensemble. The transition to the middle section at m. 49 should be played broadly and dramatically with careful attention to the ritardando dimuendo, both of which should be performed smoothly and gradually. Do not rush the fermata in m. 51. A sudden shift in tempo and dynamics in the transition will detract from the entrance of the contrasting theme played soli by the clarinet section at m. 52. The counter lines found in the contrasting middle section beginning at m. 53 will require careful attention to balance. The second transition section beginning at m. 79 requires a flexible tempo and a smooth blending of the horn line into the clarinet line. An effective,  unrushed rallentando at m. 81 will make the sudden forte entrance of the brass fanfare at m. 83 all the more dramatic. At m. 109, the tempo may begin to quicken at the discretion of the director.

The full woodwind section is featured at m. 26 in a reprise of the B-melody. The trumpets proclaim the A-melody again at m. 34 with full band accompaniment, plus woodwind fills and background lines. The interlude at m. 42 features each section of the band independently as well as the entire ensemble in concerted rhythms.The reiteration of the introduction material at m. 49 builds to a slow maestoso treatment of the A-theme. A short contrapuntal interlude, featuring woodwinds at m. 61, leads to an ending statement with the complete group at m. 66. Measure 68 is a percussion feature that builds to the explosive final tonic chord and staccato unison ending.

The piece begins with a lush brass chorale that is developed before leading to an energetic presto section. The composition comes full circle and finishes with a majestic return of the chorale material from the opening. A welcome addition to the repertoire.The title Aerius is a Latin term meaning “soaring†or “rising aloft.†The students chose this title to signify the forward momentum and overall journey of their time in the high school band program. With new events and performances, and a first time commissioning a work, this piece signifies the great strides the band has made in recent years.The opening brass chorale section should be played very connected, observing the two-measure phrasing and breathing as one cohesive unit. The Presto section at m. 25 should be taken between 165-170 bpm. the vibraphone soloist should use medium-hard mallets with the pedal on. The sustained notes at m. 41 should be played way under the upper woodwinds to get the greatest effect as it builds in volume and intensity in m. 49, and again into m. 57.At m. 69, the percussion must sustain the pulse to the conductor’s tempo, careful not to add accents they’re hearing among the other sections. Neither could I write a piece that could come close to reflecting his kind spirit, wit, personality or talent. In fact, it was almost impossible for me to write anything at all. My own grief and the stages of my grief kept getting in the way. I ended up with a setting of the hymn-tune, Resignation. Resigned. To the fact that he is no longer with us. I know he is in a better place, but we are not. We miss him very much. And so, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need seems to speak to those of us he left behind. I apologize if this piece does not reflect your special feelings for him or help you celebrate his moving on. Unfortunately, I could only put down what I have come to accept and hope in some way it may speak to any of you that knew him or to others of you who have also lost a close friend. My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. That is my hope and my hope for you.Although technically very easy, this composition requires a maturity of musicianship to be performed properly. The Bb contrabass clarinet part is integral to the composition, but there are cues in the tuba part if you need them.  Make sure you bring horns to the fore at m. 53 and the low brass at m. 59 so the melody can be heard without effort. Exaggerate dynamics to bring more emotion to the piece. Be careful not to diminuendo too soon near the end or it will be difficult to diminish even further at the very end, where the lone clarinetist holds over a couple of measures, fading into nothing. I hope your students will enjoy this piece and take from it a greater appreciation for the way making music can express feelings.

Homeward is a lyrical ballad in ABA form. The composition presents few rhythmic challenges, allowing the ensemble to concentrate on beauty of sound, balance, dynamic nuance, phrasing, and expressive performance. The woodwind voices present the melody at the opening accompanied by a flute countermelody. Care should be taken to balance the two parts. The four-measure phrases call for tapered dynamics and freedom of the metric pulse at cadence points. A change of tempo and key, with a lean toward the minor mode, mark the contrasting B section (m. 9). Heed the dynamic markings that swell to a climax (m. 16) and then subside within this section. Take liberty to hold back the tempo at the percussion link to the forte restatement of A (m. 27) and the arrival of the fortissimo climax (m. 33). The coda (m. 35) should be presented slowly and serenely as the composition comes to a quiet close.

All the While was inspired by a very special person in Tyler Arcari's life. Director's will be happy to find many opportunities for emotional and passionate playing with plenty of fun in the middle for young bands. All the While gives students a number of chances to work on expressive playing during the beginning and ending sections, and offers a light rhythmic middle section for contrast.Program Notes:All the While is a bit of a personal piece for me. I was inspired to write it by a very special person in my life. It might be a young-band piece but I feel that it has the capacity for great emotion and passionate playing as well as a little fun in the middle. Sometimes it is difficult to tell people how you feel, even if you have known them for a long time. I think sometimes we say in our heads that “I have felt this way for a long time,†and all the while never being able to put it to words.About the work:The piece opens with a flute and alto saxophone duet. This melody trades off at m. 10 with the addition of new voices and harmonies building in intensity all the way to m. 28. I personally like to use extended phrases in this section, though it looks like it would just utilize four-measure phrases. I feel this adds to the momentum building in dynamic intensity. Measure 28 is a subito change beginning with a prominent Timpani solo. The following section should be played as lightly as possible to avoid a lumbering feel. In mm. 68- 70, the agogic accents should not be very heavy, but more pointed in their momentum to m. 70.Measures 70–76 should be taken with metric liberty bringing out all of the moving parts in the low brass. The low brass really adds the foundation of momentum for the rest of the band here. Measure 76 to the end, though a repetition of material from the beginning, should be played as the high point of the piece and familiar conclusion.

Inspired by the memory of an influential music educator, Carol Brittin Chambers has woven a multitude of grooves, colors, and uplifting themes into To Create a Voice. Chambers has attempted to convey distinct moods and emotions that this educator tried to instill in his students. In honor of this dynamic teacher, you will hear Hot Cross Buns cleverly placed throughout the composition.To Create a Voice was commissioned by the Valley Concert Band in Stockton, California. The piece premiered in October 2017, in memory and celebration of Chris Anderson, a local musician and educator.When writing this piece, I tried to convey certain moods and emotions throughout: soulful at the beginning with calm woodwind chords and solo trombone; increased energy throughout the various sections of the piece; exploration of different grooves and colors; an uplifting, emotional ending that leaves the listener with a sense of how positive and loving Chris was.This piece is largely inspired by a specific quote from Chris:Most people would consider the sounds students first make on their instruments to be cringe-worthy, but to me that’s music to my ears, because that’s the first time students put a voice to their instrument. Over time those voices become stronger; they become clear, more confident, and get to a point where they use those voices to communicate with each other, and to their audiences.To relate to the first notes on the instrument idea, I used motifs based on the first notes most beginners ever play, do-re-mi, which are introduced at the beginning of the piece with the trombone solo, Chris’ instrument. During the section at m. 15, the brass introduce a chorale that I named Chris’ Theme while the woodwinds keep reminding us of do-re-mi. Later in the piece (mm. 71 and 79), I use these notes again, but in reverse, which becomes a reference to the first song most beginners learn, Hot Cross Buns. This section is also meant to portray Chris’ quirky and joking side. In mm. 75 and 83, Chris’ Theme presents itself again a couple of times in response to Hot Cross Buns.Toward the end, at the uplifting moment (m. 97), do-re-mi is heard again, but this time in harmony with mi-fa-sol. This represents the ultimate satisfaction we all feel as musicians when we have finally progressed enough to play in harmony with others. The half-time feeling in 3 at that moment also has significance, relating (rhythmically) to those important three notes again.I really hope you enjoy performing and listening to this piece as much as I have enjoyed creating it!

Avalon–Long Live the King is a medieval fantasy piece depicting the Isle of Avalon where the mystical sword Excalibur of King Arthur was forged. Composer Tyler Arcari unearths a solid piece for young bands that is both bold and dramatic. This piece is sure to spark the imagination of students and give them strong musical content with which they can develop their musicianship.Program Notes:Avalon–Long live the King began its journey as a commission in honor of a dear friend and mentor. David Riggs is one of those band directors that just seems timeless. He is a powerhouse with such a stacked resume that it is easy to forget that at the end of the day he enjoys taking long bike rides with his lovely wife and whittling a piece of wood just as much as being a band director. He has touched so many lives and inspired so many people in our field and beyond. I was humbled, and honored, when I was contacted for the commission. To David, I hope that you one day know how much you mean to so many people, including myself.About the piece:The piece is written with a little homage to David’s long tenure at Avalon Middle school in Pace, Florida. He was certainly treated like a king as the band director and rightly so. It seemed only fitting to add a little medieval fantasy. Avalon is a mystical island in the world of King Arthur where the great sword Excalibur was forged.The piece begins lyrically with a slow introduction with melodic material. This melodic motive is used throughout with slight variations depending on the instrument voicing etc. Care should be taken at m. 10 that the Timpani roll helps to bridge our transition from an exposed section to full tutti. Care should be taken so that the tempo change at m. 19 is brisk and avoids the low brass turning into stomping. Accessories like the China cymbal and tambourine can become overpowering. I recommend having students think of these effects as background in order to make sure they don’t POP out. The dynamic changes at mm. 27-35 should be subito similar to orchestral dynamic changes. Avoid unwritten crescendos in this section. Measures 60–64 are a great opportunity to teach those unwritten dynamics that make music so enjoyable as we lead up to the finale. It was originally left blank for some theatrics in the premiere at David’s retirement concert so I know he would enjoy adding some Cholesterol as David would say.Long Live the King!

This blazing fast work suggests spectacular fireworks and other such explosions with off-beat accents in the driving snare drum and timpani. Set in the standard fast-slow-fast sections, an alto saxophone soloist moves into the spotlight during the slower expressive section.Firepower was the code name for the planning of the 1997 Royal Tournament by Michael Parker (producer). I met Michael Parker in the summer of 1996 and he outlined an idea based on a firework festival he had seen in Valencia Spain. This sparked off some musical ideas and the result is this piece. The off-beat accents in the percussion part suggests explosions, and there are moments which suggest spectacular fireworks. The work is in three sections, two very fast outer parts surrounding a slower, more expressive opportunity for the alto sax soloist.

Back on Track is a spectacular composition for Concert Band. Otto M. Schwarz composed an opening fanfare for the beginning, which can also be played as a short 'teaser' at festive events. A motif is treated through various rhythms and time signatures and leads to an epic finale, splendidly brought to life by the glorious timbres of the brass.

Schubert's 5th Symphony is sunny, Viennese, scored originally for small classical orchestra and positively effervesces with ideas. Stuart Johnson has taken the theme from the 2nd movement - Andante con moto - and brought this gem within the reach of technically less advanced players without diminishing the musical quality. Schubert's delightful 5th Symphony in Bb Major, written in 1816, is a miniature, perhaps consciously avoiding comparison with Beethoven's Fifth, written just 10 years earlier. Schubert's Great was to come later! The work is sunny, Viennese, scored originally for small classical orchestra and positively effervesces with ideas.
