A lot is known about the American composer Leroy Anderson. This son of Swedish immigrants played the piano, organ, accordion, trombone, tuba and double bass. He spoke several languages fluently and graduated from Harvard with first-class honours. While on military service, the army also commissioned him to write a manual on Icelandic grammar. He already started writing musical arrangements as a student, and from his 30th year arranged and composed for the Boston Pops Orchestra. Such melodiesas Serenata, The Typewriter, Sleigh Ride and Buglers Holiday made him world famous. His best-known work, Blue Tango, reached number one in the US charts in 1952, and it sold more than a million copies. In 1975, a year after hisdeath, he was given a star at the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. Most of his works last no longer than three minutes, about the maximum length of a single at that time. One work that lasts longer is his 1953 Piano Concerto in C for piano and orchestra. The first performance was in Chicago, conducted by the composer and with Eugene List at the piano. However, after three performances he was no longer happy with the work and withdrew it. He always intended to revise it, but never got round to it. Itwas only in 1989 that the Anderson family decided to republish the work. This three-part composition is on the one hand characterised by a careless elegance, but on the other one can hear the influence of Rachmaninoff, Copland, Gershwin, and evenBeethoven and Mozart, as well as the Viennese classics.Anderson used the sonata form for the first movement. It ends with a cadenza that carries us on into the second part (in e minor). The third part is a typically cheerful American folk dance in2/4 time, a so-called Hoe Down, with a lilting, lyrical passage as its middle section. At the end comes a solo passage followed by a rapid close. In this piano concerto, Anderson combines a rigidly classical form of composition with simple andappealing themes and elements from light music. So this work is a perfect synthesis of light music and what is called serious music, in the same way as Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue. A work that can be played equally well in a concerthall, at an open-air concert or even a pop concert. Prokofiev composed his first piano concerto while at the Conservatory, in 1911 and 1912, and premiered it himself on August 7, 1912. The concerto is a single movement divided into clearly marked sections. Prokofiev could in this way keep the typical fast-slow-fast structure of the usual three-movement concerto, yet use some of the same thematic elements throughout all of his sections. Throughout the work, Prokofiev demonstrates his penchant for bright, percussive textures. The glockenspiel takes on a uniquely soloistic role, often teaming up with the piano to sparkle above the orchestral fray. With its bravura solos and daring harmonies, Prokofiev's first 'mature' composition announces him as a musical force to be reckoned with.

The Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor by Camille Saint-Saëns, was composed in 1868 and is probably Saint-Saëns' most popular piano concerto. The piece follows the traditional form of three movements but allows for more freedom in tempo markings. Normally, the first movement is fast-paced, while the second is slower. However, the two are reversed in this piece. This arrangement contains only the first movement Andante sostenuto.

The 1818 publication of Francis Johnson's A Collection of New Cotillions marks the first known publication of original music by a black composer in the United States. A prolific composer, instrumentalist, teacher and conductor, Johnson led a varied and successful career in an era in U.S. history that was not inviting to black professionals. His musical interests ranged from the contemporary works of Johann Strauss Jr. to traditional, popular dances. The cotillion is a French country dance that was popular in Europe and America in the 18th century. It was originally danced by four couples in square formation and was an important influence in the development of the square dance in the United States. Francis Johnson composed two sets of six piano accompaniments for this dance. The original 1818 publication even included movement instructions for the eight dancers. The short and charming melodies that he composed are a fitting example of popular dance music of the time. This transcription may be performed as a piano solo, with the piano as a non-solistic instrument within the ensemble or without piano at all. If it is to be a piano solo, the other instruments should not play the passages marked “opt. tacet (optional tacet). If the piano will not be treated soloistically, the conductor can have some or all of the “opt. tacet passages played at their discretion. When there is no piano involved in the performance ,all instrumentalists should ignore the “opt. tacet instruction and play everything.

David Fetter's brilliant new work Situation Update - Suite for Tenor Trombone and Concert Band is written in three contrasting movements totalling almost 11 minutes in length: 1. Swift 2. Longing 3. Exit Music Swift is marked Intense and is very rhythmic and angular. Longing is a beautiful lyrical movement marked Cantabile and Exit Music is marked Lively mixing chromatic, lyrical and syncopated segments, ending in a giant climax. Both the solo and accompaniment parts are written for advanced performers. The work's premier was performed in 2015 by retired Principal Trombonist of the Boston Symphony, Ronald Barron and accompanied at the Piano by Pianist Larry Wallach. Here is what Mr. Ewazen has said about Situation Update: I had the pleasure of hearing Ron Barron play David Fetter's exciting and virtuosic new work for Trombone and Piano, Situation Update. David's music allows the Trombonist to sing and soar in 3 contrasting movements filled with vivid colors, beautiful and expressive harmonies, and a wonderful flowing rhythmic energy. The outer movements crackle with energy, showcasing the amazing technique of soloist Ron Barron, as the melodic line shifts and changes with playful abandon, while the middle movement is heartfelt and lyrical, with beautiful melodic lines, supported by resonant, gorgeous harmonies. The work is a real tour de force and rightly deserves to take its place as a significant addition to the Trombone repertoire.

O Salutaris Hostia is one of Eriks Ešenvalds' most popular pieces. Originally written for female voices, the composer later created a version for full choir on which this arrangement is based. It has a gentle meditation with the two soloists drifting across the soft band accompaniment, alternately echoing and imitating each other or joining together in thirds. The effect is quietly ecstatic, a brief moment of adoration and wonderment. This arrangement can be played with either two cornets or two euphoniums as soloists as the accompaniment works just as effectively with either.

Inspired by demonstrated courage, this original work is intended as a confidence-building piece for a young ensemble's first Spring concert. It serves as a perfect gateway into articulation and varying dynamics: the three most commonly occurring articulation marks (staccato, accent, and tenuto) have been included, as have the middle three dynamic markings (mezzo piano, mezzo forte, and forte) building and declining in intensity. These musical concepts can be experienced individually and within the ensemble. A bold musical statement! (2:00).

When Max Reinhardt was engaged to direct a German language production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing at the Vienna Volksbühne in 1918, he asked Korngold to compose the incidental music. The production, under the German title Viel Lärmen um Nichts did not open until May 6, 1920 at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater. In the pit, the composer led members of the Vienna Philharmonic, performing no less than 18 pieces of music. In the meantime, due to the tardy premiere of the play, Korngold had already extracted a five-movement orchestral suite which garnered much praise when performed three months before the play's opening night. The five movements included: 1. the Overture; 2. Scene in the Bridal Chamber; 3. Holzapfel und Schlehwein (a mock-serious scene); 4. Intermezzo (Garden Scene); and 5. Hornpipe. When the play moved to Vienna's Burgtheater (more than 80 performances) and later to the Rezidenz Theater in Munich, the music continued to attract much attention. Demand for the music was such that Korngold arranged the suite into versions for violin and piano (four pieces), and for solo piano (three pieces). German composer-arranger Leo Artok (1885-1935) arranged the most popular three items (1. Hornpipe; 2. Garden Scene; and 3. In the Bridal Chamber) for small orchestra, which were then published by Schott in 1926. This newly engraved edition of the Artok arrangement, offered with a new full score for the first time, has been completed by R. Mark Rogers. All editions noted above are available from the publisher. Instrumentation: 1.1.2.1: 2.2.1.0: Timp.Perc(2).Harm: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).

FORGOTTEN DREAMS was completed on May 28, 1954. The first performance was a few days later on June 2nd during a recording session for Delta Records in New York, at which time Leroy Anderson performed the piano solo himself. Although the main theme of FORGOTTEN DREAMS was intended to be played on the piano (and with simplicity), the composers band edition of the piece allowed for a solo flute to substitute (Play only in absence of Piano). It is also suggested the melody might be beautifully rendered on vibraphone due to the sustaining quality of that instrument. In any event, this charmingly romantic miniature will delight audiences whenever it is performed. This edition includes a full score.

Born in Venezuela, but raised in Paris, Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) was drawn early in life to fashionable salons, singing his own songs from the piano. There he mingled with such luminaries as Mallarme and Proust, the latter with whom he formed an amorous relationship. After the first world war, he accepted an appointment of voice teaching at the École normale de music de Paris. His colleagues included Nadia Boulanger, Pablo Casals, and Jacques Thibaud. One of many musical works he composed for the stage during this time, Mozart, a musical comedy (comédie musicale) in 3 Acts, IRH 52, premiered at the Theatre Edouard VII in Paris on December 2, 1925. The libretto was written by Sacha Guitry for their first of two collaborations. The Mozart Overture, here edited by R. Mark Rogers, serves as a vibrant introduction to this underrepresented work. Instrumentation: 2.1.1.1: 2.1.00: Pno: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).
