The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notesform the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction. The Puckish Poltergeist, a programmatic work based on the pranks of a devious poltergeist, contrasts the terrifying and the comical. Through the use of rapid meter changes, simultaneous duple and triple rhythmic patterns, and contrasting textural scoring, the composer vividly conjures to mind frightened castle dwellers as they run from varied assortments of flying furniture and kitchen utensils, and the slightly bent puck, as he plays his little 'pranks.' Composed in the spring of 1991, The Pucking Poltergeist was premiered in Chicago at the 45th Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic by the VanderCook College of Music Symphonic Band under the direction of Roger Rocco. It subsequently received a performance by the United States Military Band at West Point Acadamy. In February of 1993, it was featured as one of five works selected for the Symposium XVII for New Band Music at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

This splendidly instrumented work successfully combines 20th-century musical language with the antique elements deriving from its theme - for example, in the first movement we immediately find an ancient Greek asymmetrical rhythm. The second movement takes us on an adventurous journey to those astonishing geological wonders, the Meteoras the third movement presents a picture of the Delphic dancers, in its title the fourth movement indicates the form used in it, which preserves the unity between the thousands-of-years-old building and its contrasting environment, echoing to the music of the bouzouki. In the suite the composer expertly exploits the possibilities of instrumentationoffered by the wind orchestra, this extremely effective work can be a rewarding concert piece for any ensemble. The special occasion that Philip Sparke was honoured to write this piece for was the 200th anniversary of the Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen. Since Bad Säckingen is known as the ’Trompeterstadt’, or trumpeter city, Sparke’s creative process was influenced by Joseph Victor Scheffel’s poem, Der Trompeter von Säckingen (The Trumpeter from Säckingen), which is based on a true story. The overture starts with a majestic fanfare, followed by a lively molto vivace. It is joined by a brilliant trumpet call in honour of the city’s famous resident.Overture for a Special Occasion is geschreven in opdracht van Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen ter gelegenheid van het tweehonderdjarig bestaan van het orkest, in 2011. De première van het werk vond plaats in januari van dat jaar,onder leiding van Johannes Brenke, de dirigent van het orkest. Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen, uit de gelijknamige plaats in het zuidwesten van Duitsland, werd opgericht in 1811 en is daarmee een van de oudste blaasorkesten in de regio.Het stadje Bad Säckingen (Bad betekent badplaats) staat bekend als ‘Trompeterstadt’ en kan bogen op een trompetmuseum, dat in 1985 de deuren opende. Voormalig directeur van het museum was de bekende Amerikaanse trompettist en musicoloogEdward H. Tarr. De huidige directeur is Johannes Brenke, tevens de dirigent van het orkest. De nauwe band die het stadje heeft met de trompet dateert van halverwege de 19e eeuw, toen de schilder en schrijver Joseph Victorvon Scheffel het populaire epische gedicht Der Trompeter von Säckingen schreef. This celebratory work, which Philip Sparke wrote for the 20th anniversary of the Nottingham Concert Band, starts with a hymn-like theme played as a fanfare in the brass. Puis l’ambiance se fait sereine pour introduire une mélodie jouée par les clarinettes et accompagnée d’un motif rythmique la caisse claire. Un crescendo mène un passage puissant repris par l’orchestre entier qui réintroduit la trame initiale. Le tableau final est rehaussé par la reprise majestueuse du thème d’origine, interprété cette fois par les cuivres, où s’entrelacent les attrayantes répliques des bois. A Bluegrass Overture was commissioned by Gabriel Wooley and funded by a grant from Leslie and Cathy Anderson for the Central Kentucky Concert Band to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2016. This energetic overture opens with an introduction loosely based on 'bluegrass' chords before a slower, legato chorale appears in the clarinets and flutes. This is short-lived and soon a new mood is introduced, based on a repeated-note accompaniment. This leads to the main theme, heavily syncopated with bluesy inflections. A central section features a cantabile melody, which changes key frequently, before the main theme reappears, leading to a triumphal presentation of the earlierchorale melody. A Bluegrass Overture is geschreven voor de Central Kentucky Concert Band ter gelegenheid van hun veertigjarig bestaan in 2016. De opdracht komt van Gabriel Wooley en is gefinancierd door een gift van Leslie en Cathy Anderson. Deze energieke ouverture opent met bluegrass-akkoorden, waarna in de klarinetten en fluiten een langzamer, legato koraal naar voren komt. Diese energiegeladene Ouverture beginnt mit einer Einleitung mit lockeren Bluegrass-Akkorden, bevor ein langsamer Choral im Legato in den Klarinetten und Floten erklingt. Das ist jedoch nur von kurzer Dauer, denn schon bald wird durch eine Begleitung mit repetierten Noten eine neue Stimmung erzeugt. Dies fuhrt schliesslich zum Hauptthema mit deutlichen Synkopen und Blues-Modulationen. Die zentrale Passage zeichnet sich durch eine kantable Melodie aus, die haufigdie Tonart wechselt, bevor das Hauptthema wiederkehrt und zu einer triumphalen Prasentation der vorherigen Choralmelodie hinleitet. Bientot un changement d'atmosphere se produit, base sur un accompagnement de motifs de notes repetees. Ceci nous mene au theme principal, tres syncope, aux inflexions de blues. La section du milieu comprend une melodie lyrique qui change de tonalite frequemment, avant que le retour du theme principal nousmene a une presentation triomphale de la melodie de choral entendue plus tot. Una sezione centrale dalla melodia cantabile che cambia spesso tonalita anticipa la ricomparsa del tema principale, che conduce a sua volta a una trionfale riproposizione della melodia corale.
