Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) made his first sketches for material that would later find its way into Cassazione at the end of the 1890s; there are already hints of it among the sketches for the First Symphony, completed in 1899. He conducted the first performance of Cassazione as the opening number in a concert of his music held at the Helsinki University Hall on February 8, 1904. Described as ballad for orchestra, the work is structured in five episodes. Robert J. Ambrose's transcription for wind band is based on the original full symphony orchestra version (the full score published by Fennica Gehrman, ISMN 9790550112353). This transcription gives an opportunity to perform the work with smaller ensembles (down to 28 musicians) as well as full wind band. See the sample pages for instrumentation and performance notes.

A dream inspired Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) to compose The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Kahn, based on the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The composer originally wrote it for piano in 1912. Four years later, at the encouragement of Ferruccio Busoni, he expanded it into a shimmering symphonic poem. Following the first performance in the autumn of 1919 under the direction of Pierre Monteux, it achieved great success and remains one of his most frequently-performed works today. The work reveals the influence of French impressionism, meandering through the lush gardens of the legendary palace. This edition by Gregory Vaught is part of the Nieweg Performance Editions series. I wrote Galloping Ghosts (A Ragtime March) to conclude a concert of my chamber music in New York City on October 28, 1986. It is the final part of a work called Rags for Divers Players. This work was written to show the variety possible within the standard rag form. I used all the players available for the finale -- two violins, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, and piano. Since this is a rather unusual instrumental combination and not easy to reassemble, I decided to rescore the work for concert band. Galloping Ghosts is written in a standard march form but incorporates many of the syncopations found in ragtime. The uniquely American music called ragtime traces its history to African rhythms brought over by slaves. Over the years this music became welded to European musical forms such as the quadrille and the march. Drums and banjos and the minstrel tradition lent a special flavor, and from all these elements ragtime slowly evolved within the largely unknown black subculture of the late 19th century. In the late 1890's it emerged as a fully developed form in the classic piano solos of Scott Joplin (1869-1917). Joplin's 1899 hit, Maple Leaf Rag, was an overnight sensation and brought ragtime worldwide fame. Guardians of the Waves was commissioned by the Japan Coast Guard Band to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2018. They gave the premiere as part of a 30th anniversary concert on November 8th that year. Set in traditionalmarch form, Guardians of the Waves opens with a short introduction, which leads to the main theme, played initially by the brass and then repeated with a florid woodwind descant. The theme is extended and morphs into asecond theme, first played tutti and then quietly repeated by bassoon, tenor sax and euphonium. This leads to a conventional ‘bass strain’, played twice with varying accompaniments. A quieter trio section follows, delicatelyscored and featuring the tenor instruments of the band. Taken up by the full band, this leads back to a recall of the introduction and a return to the main two themes, which lead to a triumphal close.Guardians of the Waves werd geschreven in opdracht van de Japan Coast Guard Band ter gelegenheid van het dertigjarig bestaan van dit orkest, in 2018. De première vond plaats tijdens het jubileumconcert op 8 november van datjaar. Het werk, dat is gecomponeerd in een traditionele marsvorm, begint met een korte introductie die het hoofdthema inleidt, dat aanvankelijk wordt gespeeld door het koper en dan wordt herhaald met een weelderige discant in hethout. November 2018 im Rahmen eines Jubiläumskonzertes statt.Guardians of the Waves wurde als traditioneller Marsch komponiert und beginnt mit einer kurzen Einleitung, die zum Hauptthema führt.
