Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed this madrigal in 1605. It appears in the fifth of his eight books of madrigals and is one of his most famous. Cruda Amarilli are the first words in a soliloquy from the play Il pastor fido, which was published in Venice in 1589 by the dramatic poet Battista Guarini (1538-1612). The soliloquy translates as follows: Cruel Amaryllis, who with your name to love, alas, bitterly you teach. Amaryllis, more than the white privetpure, and more beautiful, but deafer than the deaf asp, and fiercer and more elusive. Since telling offended you, I shall die in silence. Barry Toombs' elegant brass quintet arrangement of Monteverdi's madrigal setting of Cruda Amarilli successfully imitates the fluid quality of the human voice.

Psalm XIX: The Heavens Declare was written by the Italian composer, writer, and theorist Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739). By profession Marcello served as a governor and chamber-lain in Italy, although he is well-known for his harsh satires of contemporary coposers, such as Vivaldi and Lotti, As a composer, Marcello was ingenious and imaginative; his works include opera librettos, concertos, vocal music, and psalm settings in cantana style. This particular psalm setting has become popular for organ, and, thanks to the talent of arranger Barry Toombs, is part of the repertoire of the Westwind Brass. Mr. Toombs's brass quintet arrangement of The Heavens Declare calls for the optional B Piccolo Trumpet in the 1st Trumpet part. It is preferred that the 1st trumpet player use a piccolo trumpet. However, if one is not available, B trumpet may be uses as a substitute.

Claudio Monteverdi composed this toccata as an instrumental introduction for the opera L’Orfeo (1607). According to the composer, this introduction should be played three times before the rising of the curtain. This is actually the first overture in the history of opera.)The story of Orfeo, who enchanted nature with his music, is tragic, as he loses his beloved Eurydice and decides to retrieve her from the underworld. On their return journey, one glance back at her is fatal: he loses her for the second time.)This arrangement for wind band is very suitable as a concert opener. The toccata is played three times just like the original. The first time it is played by a quintetconsisting of two trumpets and three trombones.)Various ways of performing this toccata are possible. The tension builds up more intensely if the quintet starts off stage. Eventually, these five players join the band, after which the tutti version follows two times. You can also have the brass play from the gallery during the second or third time for a double choir effect.

The Baroque is a period of frills and ornaments, wether in architecture, painting or music. An easy melody passes through a variety of arrangements. From brass quintet and different tutti parts, all the sections are in action. Fortified by a drum set and an (optional) electric bass, the piece is given a modern touch and becomes more acceptable to the audience. A follow-up to Rondo Romantica, this piece was composed in December 1997. We proudly bring you another one of Robert van Berigen’s spectacular arrangements of popular classical works, based on Franz Schubert’s famous song, The Trout, Op. 32, composed in 1817. Schubert liked the melody so much he used it again in his Trout Quintet in 1819. This arrangement will both charm and delight your audience.

Alfred Reed needs no introduction for those who admire his distinguished concert band works. This arrangement for concert band draws from five movements of his original 28 composed for brass quintet based on London Bridge Is Falling Down. Included are: Statement, Waltz, March Fo(u)rth!, A Little Funeral Music, Please (Eine Kleine Trauermusik), and Finale. A demonstration of compositional techniques practiced during the past three centuries, the work is filled with captivating and highly musical moments. Even though players will encounter a few changes in tonal centers, meters, and tempo throughout, there is not much that would get in the way of having a fun experience learning and performing. This great composition is intended to capture the integrity and intensity of Thomas Edison. Opening with an alternating woodwind quintet- brass choir section, it quickly moves into a fanfare and theme exposition. Warm rich harmonies underscore a lyric trumpet solo which begins the slower middle section. EXCELLENT!
