When Max Reinhardt was engaged to direct a German language production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing at the Vienna Volksbühne in 1918, he asked Korngold to compose the incidental music. The production, under the German title Viel Lärmen um Nichts did not open until May 6, 1920 at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater. In the pit, the composer led members of the Vienna Philharmonic, performing no less than 18 pieces of music. In the meantime, due to the tardy premiere of the play, Korngold had already extracted a five-movement orchestral suite which garnered much praise when performed three months before the play's opening night. The five movements included: 1. the Overture; 2. Scene in the Bridal Chamber; 3. Holzapfel und Schlehwein (a mock-serious scene); 4. Intermezzo (Garden Scene); and 5. Hornpipe. When the play moved to Vienna's Burgtheater (more than 80 performances) and later to the Rezidenz Theater in Munich, the music continued to attract much attention. Demand for the music was such that Korngold arranged the suite into versions for violin and piano (four pieces), and for solo piano (three pieces). German composer-arranger Leo Artok (1885-1935) arranged the most popular three items (1. Hornpipe; 2. Garden Scene; and 3. In the Bridal Chamber) for small orchestra, which were then published by Schott in 1926. This newly engraved edition of the Artok arrangement, offered with a new full score for the first time, has been completed by R. Mark Rogers. All editions noted above are available from the publisher. Instrumentation: 1.1.2.1: 2.2.1.0: Timp.Perc(2).Harm: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).
These products are currently being prepared by a new publisher. While many items are ready and will ship on time, some others may see delays of several months.

Ryan Nowlin is a new composer to the Standard of Excellence In Concert series of concert band compositions for young bands. Mr. Nowlin currently teaches instrumental music in the Breckville-Broadview Heights School District (Ohio) where he directs high school wind ensemble, marching band, and jazz ensemble. Ryan's Steadfast Overture uses lyrical melodies that are very accessible to the beginning musician. Written in overture form, this piece gives young students a chance to be expressive. The main theme in each occurrence is treated in a different fashion, keeping it fresh to the ear. Although the middle section is performed at the same tempo, the phrase structure and feel provide the distinct contrast necessary in an overture. Perfect for one of your first concerts or contest/festival performances!

The Voice on the Mountain was written for Mike Veak, a band director who dedicated 30 years of his life to teaching instrumental music in Lincoln, Nebraska. Nolan Schmit begins the piece with a flute solo representing a solitary voice on a mountain. The voice begins to build in strength and intensity as it travels down the mountain, is heard by others and is communicated to distant lands. This is a musical metaphor for a teacher - a solitary voice - who impacts generations of students. This is really a tribute to all band directors. A dramatic setting with an explosive ending.

There are plenty of opportunities for the percussion section to shine and lots of hand-clapping and knee-slapping to hold the interest and enthusiasm of the entire band. A perfect encore selection! Tom Rudolph and Drew Shanefield are new composers to the Standard of Excellence In Concert series. Both composers are from Pennsylvania. When one sees the name of Elliot Del Borgo, it is immediately associated with concert band music of the highest order. Dervish Dance is no exception. Here is an energetic dance set in the Dorian mode (natural minor), which gives it the Middle Eastern flavor. The opening section can be played as fast as possible followed by a contrasting slow section. The closing is a powerful depiction of the famed Whirling Dervish. Even though the piece is speedy, the notes lay well under the fingers, and it sounds much more difficult than it is. A great festival opener or closer!
