The ballet describes the journey of Belkis, the Queen of Sheba, to Solomon, the King of Israel, with whom she was in love. She travels with a large caravan including elephants, camels, slaves and many valuable treasures, through the desert. Kimura has arranged this colourful Oriental suite for wind band.

The introductory theme of this composition echoes the majestic size of the mountains that are visible from the picture-postcard Cortina d’Ampezzo—the socalled Queen of the Dolomites. Then we hear a lyrical theme, in which we feel the peacefulness of the surrounding countryside. We can even hear the hustle and bustle of the popular ski resort, before the two opening themes return in reverse order to bring this musical sight-seeing excursion to a close.

Laudate Regem - or Praise the King! After a reign of 33 years, Beatrix, Queen of the Netherlands, stepped down from the throne to make way for her eldest son Willem-Alexander. For this special occasion, Matthias van Nispen tot Pannerden haswritten a majestic work for the Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra, which sounded at precisely the moment the new king left the Nieuwe Kerk after his inauguration. A festive work for a memorable occasion! The Adagio is based on a manuscript that was discovered in the Dresden State Library after the Second World War by Remo Giazotto, a Milanese musicologist who was working on Albinoni’s biography at the time. Only the bass line and six bars of melody were found and they probably belonged to the slow movement of a Trio Sonata. In 1945 Giazotti reconstructed the now famous Adagio which has made Albinoni known to a worldwide audience. The opening movement begins high up with stylised birdsong and moves down through the registers, through Frye’s Motet, to the depths of a tuba solo. The second movement is a slow processional which revolves around a series of chords and leads, without a break, through a tutti passage in octaves to the third, which opens with a trumpet solo and moving through several fast sometimes, contrapuntal episodes to a triumphal arrival of a quotation from a Mass by Jacob Obrecht.
