Ritual, a work for large concert band, describes the atmosphere during a pagan ceremonial offering. The tension of the approaching ritual, softly supported by a mysterious percussion accompaniment, slowly builds and leads to an enticing dance. This precedes the height of the ritual, the pagan sacrifice. Following the sacrifice the peace seems to be restored until suddenly a surprising final turn ends Ritual.

Ãrpád Balázs (*1937) composed the first version of Rhapsody for Hungarian cimbalom and concert band in 2001; in 2021, on the encouragement by a Japanese marimba player he arranged the solo part for marimba, and therefore the opportunities for the work to beplayed have significantly widened. The Rhapsody follows the one-movement structure created by Franz Liszt. The beginning solo section of the cimbalom (or marimba) returns before the coda as a pillar of the form. The composition, which can be divided into five sections, develops and works with a Lydian tetrachordal motif (G-A-B-C sharp) in different characters, stretching the span of music from a simple, children's song-like appearance to an obstinate ritual dance. In conclusion, the Rhapsody is a passionately emotional lyric orchestral poem rich in colours and characters, which has a place on the repertoire of every concert band playing quality music.

Journey back to the time of the ancient Celtic Druids through the use of modal harmonies and a variety of percussion timbres. Conveying both mysticism and strength, the melodic ideas weave throughout the ensemble before coming to a powerful conclusion. Using only six notes and simple eighth-note rhythms, this is a great piece for young musicians.

Dana Wilson always strives to introduce students and audiences to new ways of thinking about music and performance practices. This work serves somewhat as an incantation, a summoning up of, by means of a group music ritual, the goodness of the earth and, consequently, ourselves. Rhythmic vocalizations abound, juxtaposed with rhythmical, percussive ensemble writing. Dana Wilson is a master and his works light up any program in which they are performed.

Two contrasting sections, both in tempo and style, make this an excellent teaching and performing piece. A fine example of creative writing for the young band.
