Composed in the 1700s, this traditional Irish ballad was a lament of homesickness for its author, and now a tender and beloved melody appearing on countless recordings. Also known as “The Wind from the South†or “An Gaoth Aneas,†this setting for second year players provides melody for all sections of the band along with subtle and tasteful harmonic variants. As a composer, Henry Fillmore (1881-1956), was one of the greatest practitioners of the American style march. Written for the 1952 Orange Bowl game between the North and South College Football All Stars, this march has all the elements of the mature Fillmore style: energy, brilliance and abundant, memorable tunes. Robert Foster's concert edition will liven up any program and would also make a great encore.

Composer Robert W. Smith has enjoyed his sojourns in the great state of Texas each summer since 1985. In a recent visit to the southwest with his family, he was inspired to sketch three impressions of the Lone Star State. Desert Dawn opens the work with Native-American overtones depicting the warmth of the sunrise over a beautiful southwestern vista. Anyone ever visiting San Antonio will delight in the Paseo Del Rio depicting the light and lively Riverwalk of this great city. The energetic and powerful Longhorns concludes the work with a sense of joy while celebrating this uniquely American way of life. Suitable for concert and festival performance, Southwest Summer will be a valued addition to your next program.

The work opens with a stern fanfare in bare fifths, which leads to a cantabile theme introduced by alto saxophone. This builds to a climax and reintroduces the fanfare, which slowly evolves into the subsequent vivo. A perky tune emerges on flute, saxophone and trumpet, which, after a short bridge passage, leads to a contrasting melody on low clarinets and saxophones. After some development a true ‘second subject’ appears for the whole band. A recapitulation leads briefly back to the opening fanfare before the vivo returns to close the work in celebratory mood.

Highdays and Holidays was commissioned by the South Berks Concert Band to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2016. The band rehearses in the village of Mortimer, which has a long and fascinating history dating back to, and beyond, the BronzeAge. Mortimer is famous for The Mortimer Revel, an annual event which was apparently a fairly rumbustious and sometimes violent affair. Highdays and Holidays seeks to capture some of this festive event in the form of an energeticoverture, which explores a variety of moods including the somewhat chaotic atmosphere of the Revel.

A Sevenoaks Suite was commissioned by the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Concert Band from Kent in the south-east of England. The suite describes 3 famous landmarks in the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge area: ‘Knole Park’, situated to the south-east of Sevenoaks. ‘The Chapel - Tonbridge School’: This movement centres around a hymn-like chorale, depicting the years of worship that have taken place within the chapel, and ‘The Vine Bandstand’ suggesting the type of music often played in bandstands. It is in march form, but is not actually a march throughout, veering off into other styles before ending emphatically.

The Blue Mountains are a breathtaking mountain and forest landscape in the New South Wales, Australia. This work came about above all inspired by Weeping Rock, an overhanging rock that gets its name from the waterfall that flows over it.The Blue Mountains bevinden zich in New South Wales in Australië. Die Blue Mountains sind eine atemberaubende Wald- und Berglandschaft im australischen Bundesstaat New South Wales. Notes The Teton Range is part of the Rocky Mountain chain just east of the Idaho border and south of Yellowstone National Park. The name of this majestic range has its roots in the Shoshone teewinet, meaning many pinnacles. Performance Suggestions: The opening measures of The Grand Tetons should be played broadly and majestically. At m. 14, the tempo is indicated at q = 132 and is introduced by a light snare drum figure. The low brass figures at m.18 are to be played softly and broadly in contrast to the lighter and slightly louder high woodwinds. This entire section builds to a climax at m.44. Note the dynamic contrasts in the mixed meter section after m. 53. at 67, the trombone and horn figures should be evident but not overbearing against the lightly played trumpet solo. The 2 measure mixed meter (6/8) (3/4) theme introduced at m.88 should be performed by exaggerating the dotted 8th-16th rhythm, thereby creating a slight swing and dance-like feeling. At m.109, the 8th notes become even and the theme more strident and energetic, with the ritard returning Tetons to the opening theme at m.129.Notes The Teton Range is part of the Rocky Mountain chain just east of the Idaho border and south of Yellowstone National Park.
