Composed by jazz pianist Chick Corea and recorded on his landmark 1973 album Light as a Feather, this vibrant work has solidified its standing as a jazz fusion classic. The lyrical and sensuous opening features a solo tenor sax, followed by a fast and energetic Latin pulse that features the melody traded between various sections of the band. Paul Murtha's exciting version is effectively crafted for the concert stage.

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. His father was a wool merchant. Originally he seemed destined to follow in his father’s footsteps, and thus sailed the oceans to countries as far apart as Iceland and Guinea. In 1476 his ship was sunk during a battle off the coast of Portugal. Columbus saved his own life by swimming to shore. In 1484 he conceived the idea of sailing to the Indies via a westward sea route, but it was only in 1492 that he was able to realize this plan. On this first voyage he was in command of three ships: the flag-ship, called the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Ni?a. From Spain Columbus sailed via the Canary Islands to the Bahamas, whichhe sighted on October 12th 1492. Without being aware of it Columbus discovered the ‘New World’ he thought he had landed in the eastern part of Asia. The motif from Dvoøák’s 9th Symphony ‘Aus der neuen Welt’ forms a little counterfeit history at this point in the composition. After this first voyage Columbus was to undertake another three long voyages to America. These voyages were certainly not entirely devoid of misfortune. More than once he was faced with shipwreck, mutiny and the destruction of settlements he had founded. After Columbus had left for Spain from Rio Belen in 1503, he beached his ships on the coast of Jamaica. The crew were marooned there and it was only after a year that Columbus succeeded in saving his men and sailing back to Spain with them. In the music the misunderstanding about which continent Columbus discovered in his lifetime resounds, for does this part in the composition not contain Asiatic motifs? Poor Columbus! Paseen jaar later weet Columbus zijn bemanning te redden en met hen terug te varen naar Spanje. In de muziek klinkt het misverstand over welk werelddeel Columbus in zijn leven bevaren had door. Written in the 12th century, the Codex Calixtinus opened the way for pilgrimage from most cities in Europe and North Africa to Santiago de Compostela, in Spain. Compostela - The Way of St James describes the pilgrims' journey. After a slow introduction, a brilliant theme announces the start of the journey. The arrival in Spain is indicated by incantatory chants and majestic chords. Finally, the music softens as the pilgrims venerate St James.

PARADE CONCERTO was Lancen's first concerto for symphonic band. He had fallen in love with the marvellous sonorities of a symphonic band and wanted to join the wind players in a concert, so he wrote this concerto and gave it a parade character. PARADE CONCERTO was premiered in 1972 by Pierre NIMAX in Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxemburg), G. WAGNER conducting. That same year the composer performed it for the first time, in Spain with the Banda Primitiva from Lliria, Jan MOLENAAR conducting. He has performed it since in many countries, including France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Luxemburg, Norway and the USA.

Guernica, a peaceful town in the Basque region of Spain, was reduced to ruins on the 26th of April 1937 by Nazi bombers. It was a totally unexpected attack that happened while the crowded open-air market was in progress. Over 1600 innocent citizens were killed.This was one of the most senseless and abhorrent war crimes in history. In this new work by Jan Hadermann the music of the Basque region can clearly be heard, with street musicians adding lustre to the open-air market with dance music. Spring is in the air when suddenly from behind the mountaintops, the death squad appears and all hell breaks loose. The work ends with an intense plea to never let anything like this happenagain. Not a great deal is known about the life of the artist and poet Adriaen Valerius (ca. 1575 - 1625). He is mostly remembered today for his collection of 79 songs for voice and lute (or cittern) called the Nederlandtsche Gedenck-clanck (literally Netherlands sound memories). The book is a collection of his poems, set to already-existing popular melodies, and is significant in that it is one of the earliest published sources of the Wilhelmus, the Dutch National Anthem. The book gained national popularity during the long war with Spain, a popularity that was revived for similar reasons during German occupation in World War II.
