Alfred Reed (1921-2005) was one of America's most prolific and frequently performed composers. The Hounds of Spring was composed in 1980 and was inspired by the poem “Atalanta in Calydon” by Algernon Charles Swinburne. In this concert overture, Reed captures the elements of youthful exuberance and tenderness of love expressed in the poem. Remaining true in form and intent to the original, Robert Longfield has masterfully shortened and adapted this work for younger bands. Dur: 5:30.

The premier performance of The Rite of Spring in 1913 is the stuff of legends. There are disagreements amongst the people who attended whether it was the music or the choreography that caused the near-riot in the audience. Since then The Rite has been performed regularly and is considered to be one of the most influential works of the 20th century, laying the basis for modern jazz, film music and even heavy metal. It's all here: the driving rhythms, the haunting Russian folk melodies, the brilliant scoring, the crunching harmonies and the epic drama! The intention with this arrangement for band was to stay as true as possible to the original and choose the sections that would work well in this context. Sure to become a valued and important addition to the wind band repertoire! Duration: 6:30.

This work was composed as a commission by the Keika Gakuen Symphonic Band, to commemorate their 40th annual concert. The composition is a march-style work that begins with a chorale based on a theme from the school song—a distinctive motif that reappears in the middle section. Tetsuya Kashino, a graduate of the high school, is a band coach and has a deep friendship with the composer. Kashino named the work Scent of Spring, which reflects two distinct meanings—firstly, in Japanese, a part of the band’s own name, and also “a premiere in Springâ€. Scent of Spring is a bright and optimistic piece of music, suitable to perform on various occasions.

In 1880, Edvard Grieg composed twelve song poems by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. He arranged two of these songs for String Orchestra published under the title of Two Elegiac Melodies, Op. 34. These two deeply meloncholy pieces were titled The Wounded Heart and Last Spring. The latter of these two titles inspired Tohru Takahashi to produce this expressive and sensitive transcription for Concert Band, which will make a fantastic encore piece for any concert. Last Spring komt uit de Two Elegiac Melodies for String Orchestra, opus 34.

The Spring Sketches is a sequel to the 2006 Fanfare - Young Pheasants in the Sky. The Spring Sketches is a wonderful work to perform on its own, but also creates an interesting set when performed in conjunction with itspredecessor, the Fanfare.

Flowers bloom and the world stirs with life renewed in Spring’s Awakening! The music begins with a driving ostinato in the clarinets, and staggered entrances that portray flowers opening for the first time. After the entire ensemble enters, two different melodic themes are passed throughout the ensemble, layered over driving 8th-note rhythms that propel the music forward. Spring’s Awakening is an engaging and beautiful work that makes a perfect fit for any spring or end of the year concert.

Symphony no. 6 dates from the spring of 2009. It is dedicated to the conductor Károly Neumayer and his orchestra, the Pécs Railway Workers' Concert Wind Ensemble. About the work, the composer writes: 'This three-movement composition follows the classical traditions, but the first movement further develops the Scriabin-type sonata form, combining two fast movements. In contrast to the lyricism of the second movement a subterranean, negative force also makes its presence felt but in a dramatic conflict is overcome by the massive, inspired communal singing of the lyrical material, which becomes chorale-like as it emanates from the modal scales. The third movement is acheerful, dance-like scherzo, with comical, humorous sound-effects ' Die 6.
