Composer Robert W. Smith has enjoyed his sojourns in the great state of Texas each summer since 1985. In a recent visit to the southwest with his family, he was inspired to sketch three impressions of the Lone Star State. Desert Dawn opens the work with Native-American overtones depicting the warmth of the sunrise over a beautiful southwestern vista. Anyone ever visiting San Antonio will delight in the Paseo Del Rio depicting the light and lively Riverwalk of this great city. The energetic and powerful Longhorns concludes the work with a sense of joy while celebrating this uniquely American way of life. Suitable for concert and festival performance, Southwest Summer will be a valued addition to your next program.

As summer ends, the chill of the autumn air awakens feelings within us. The shadows are longer in late afternoon and darkness comes early. The trees are losing their leaves and their gnarled trunks and branches take on sinister profiles against the looming twilight. We shudder at the cold wind. Our pulse quickens and we suddenly want to return to the safety and warmth of home. Night falls and we are once again at peace. We say a final farewell to the carefree days of summer and accept the relentless march of the seasons. Winter will soon be here. Shadows of the Equinox is a dramatic and lyrical piece inspired by a late Midwest autumn. It was commissioned by the 2010 Festival of Bands, Vincennes, Indiana, including the bands from Barr-Reeve, Loogootee, Mitchell, North Daviess, North Knox, and South Knox High Schools. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

This piece was composed in the summer of 2000, on commission of the Whightull Wind Ensemble. Seaside Road is a march in two-four time. The work begins with a tempestuous sound, followed by a light passage. Featuring, amongst others, your Bass Clarinet and Euphonium soloists in the trio section, the work builds towards an agile tutti before concluding with a powerful closing section. A must for all your summer season concerts.

This rhapsody reflects the four seasons combined with the natural scenery that characterises the city of Québec and its surrounding region. Autumn is depicted with hunting horns playing in the forest, followed by a pastoral melody, principally in the woodwinds. Winter in the mountains is poetic and romantic. Spring arrives with a frolicsome and playful theme mirroring the start of new life. Soon everything flowers lushly, and the music swells into the full sounding energy of summer, bringing the work to a brilliant and dynamic close. A great work for any time of year.
